Build Reports / Lunar Cosmo-skreddy Lunar Module Deluxe
February 27, 2022, 06:38:23 PM
Here's my Lunar Module Deluxe on a Madbean Cosmopolitan board. I like this one a lot. I can get that blown out silicon fuzz face, tighten it up, push it, darken/brighten and lots of volume on tap. Depending on settings it can clean up pretty damn good. Bonus, no impedance issues-plays nice with buffers/wahs. Recorded a quick knob turning clip with my SG special with p90s into a deluxe reverb with no reverb.

Build Reports / Opamp Muff
February 24, 2022, 01:30:08 AM
You know what it is and how it sounds. This is Siamese Dream in a box. All grind, all the time. I like the tone lift switch, gives it a nice fuller midrange. Stark suit Spiderman cause it's the Opamp. UV print with a mix of my style and the original text. The aluminum knobs really bring it home.

Build Reports / Valentine's Day Double Muff Monday
February 14, 2022, 01:36:36 PM
Here is the Double Muff. Unlike the other muff fuzz I posted this one is the transistor version. What's better than one muff...two! I decided I may as well post a sound clip with both pedals and show what each can do and compare them against each other. Another simple build that came together with no issues.
For the artwork, I'm going thru a Spiderman theme. I went with Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin because his split personalities perfectly represent the dual muffs. And he's The Goat! He woke up in another universe and instantly started shit and ruining some kids life. GOAT . UV print on matte black tayda enclosure with stompboxparts green aluminum knobs.

Build Reports / Muff Fuzz - aka the problem child
February 11, 2022, 03:52:29 PM
It always seems like the builds with the least amount of parts are the biggest headaches. The muff fuzz came in to variations. The first was a dual transistor version that was something of a fixed gain fuzz face. The version this is based on the the 70s opamp version that was gone when EHX did the opamp muff. Like all things EHX back then, nothing was consistent and revisions were constant. It seems that the schematic of this pedal going around the internet was not complete and gives some issues.
First, the schematic in the build docs is incorrect. R1 should be 100k not 1k. My second issue is the use of germanium diodes. Ge with it's lower threshold cuts to much volume and this barely hit unity with the volume maxed out. I used 1n4148s and that was much better. Final issue is missing component on the schematic floating around the web.
As is, the pedal sounds good, but does not sound as good as the transistor version. The transistor one had good volume cleanup and smooth not decay. This one had no volume cleanup and a horrible gating on initial attack and a sizzle misbias sound on the decay. After much internet sleuthing I ran across a couple threads on diysb that led me to the issue.
One soul who was fixing a broken unit with the help of Marc Hammer, traced the original to find a resistor in parallel to the diodes in the feedback loop. The way the circuit is designed pushes the diodes at or above their limit for a second, causing the initial gating. The way Hammer breaks it down is pretty interesting and I learned alot thru the process. The resistor EHX used was 100k. I experimented, it was a balancing act of taming the gating/decay and not lowering the gain too much so it would still sound the same. I landed on 220k.
Now we have a circuit that sounds good, is very similar to the transistor version and has excellent volume cleanup. For the enclosure I went with the Secret Wars black symbiote suit because I'm doing a series of Spiderman based muff builds. This is the first of three. UV print on matte white enclosure with a big ass Davies knob I've had for years. Sound clip coming tonight or tomorrow.

Build Reports / EHX Frequency Analyzer-mbp freekout
February 04, 2022, 10:37:52 PM
You know what it is, what it does and what it sounds like. Best ring mod imo. Love how this turns my guitar into a lofi synth robot. Vision inspired graphics. Hope Brian reissues it one day.

Build Reports / Hybrid Cosmo-skreddy hybrid fuzz driver
January 29, 2022, 08:24:42 PM
I fell in love with the skreddy screwdriver, it really is fantastic and I can't praise it enough. So I had to build a hybrid fuzz driver. This thing rips on humbuckers and sounds surprisingly great on single coils too. Compared to the screwdriver it feels less compressed, brighter and the first stage boost being a bjt vs MOSFET in the sd gives it a more amp like feel and tone. This cops better marshall sounds than most miab pedals. The volume knob cleanup on this is unreal as well. From low gain to pushed plexi type tones this is a real keeper. Gotta give props to my homie David (Mr. Effectslayouts) for the hook-up on the Russian npn germs, came in clutch for this build and a few more to come. Adam Warlock UV print cause he's a hybrid human, cosmic being and all round badass.

Build Reports / Mysterioso
January 16, 2022, 08:37:40 PM
I've had this board since it was released and like many of us don't get to it cause we get distracted by other builds. Well this weekend has been very productive. Since everyone slept in the past could days I was able to get up early and knock out two builds. Gotta get it in while I can. This is a really cool one spend about an hour with it on the test rig before boxing. Tried with numerous guitars and its good with all of them. Can do low to semi high gain and with two channels and lots of tone shaping control between the tone (mids control) and internal dip switches you can tailor to any rig. I prefer the reactive mode because you get excellent volume knob cleanup and dynamics. No film on tayda enclosure. I took the route Brian did for his graphic and went with Mysterio. Another great layout and pedal from Brian. Highly recommend for a different style of drive pedal.

Build Reports / Great Vengeance-D*A*M Ezekiel 25:17
January 15, 2022, 05:14:55 PM
Here's another excellent Bass Drive from my homie David aka Storyboardist. Versatile bass drive to has lots 4 clipping options, clean blend and drive can go from low gain to fuzz like. Bonus, also sounds good on guitar. Playing more bass lately so I'm assembling bass circuits for a dedicated board. No film on tayda enclosure with Bullseye. I'll try and get a sound clip up this weekend.

Build Reports / Slow loris
January 13, 2022, 12:59:38 AM
You know what its all about and how it sounds, except BigMonk lol. I wanted yet another for an alternate board for bass that I'm working on. Motorola metal can 308. Just a mean sounding pedal. Love Brian's 2020 to present layouts, so clean.

Build Reports / EHX Freedom Preamp
January 09, 2022, 10:45:40 PM
Here is a great project from effectslayouts that was recently released. Based on the old freedom amplifier's preamp section. Could use it to go direct to a daw or as a different flavor of overdrive. Josh Scott did a video on the amp and gives a great idea of the tone. Straight forward build with no issues. Artwork inspired by @jjjimi84.

Build Reports / The forehead of security-archibald
January 01, 2022, 04:53:05 PM
First build report of the year. First tube build. Thanks to Brian for answering my questions when I had a mishap. Build was pretty straightforward but I had a cap blow on this after a few minutes of power while testing. It took the inductor with it in a puff of smoke. Brain said I could jumper but voltages we're off on the tube in spots. After narrowing it down to V++ I replaced another cap that went with the first one and all was good.
So how does it sound? Very convincing tube like drive, dynamic tube like response hahaha. I will make a short demo clip later today, my daughter's friend spent the night last night and are hanging in my man cave/music room. Sounds pretty good with a negligible difference between 9v and 12v. Power full EQ or basic EQ. The buffer makes a huge difference, and the bias is fun the mess with. I like the range on the gain knob.
This is a uv print and went with John Favreau's Happy Hogan. Such a great character and fits the Archibald/Jeeves pedigree great. Standard 12ax7 I had laying around worked great.  Here's to another year of awesome MBP projects!

Build Reports / Lectric-fx Spaceharp V3
December 04, 2021, 09:38:37 PM
This is one of two builds that was done simultaneously. This one is going to @jjjimi84 cause he's a righteous dude and he asked if I would build him one and I was happy to. This was built on the newly released lectric-fx spaceharps V3 board. This has a reworked LFO and has a nice thick chewy sound. Love the layout lectric-fx did on this. The enclosure is a tayda matte black with uv print. Went with the infinity gauntlet with stones and the image turned out great. All white wiring on this one and all going forward as I got the 1000ft roll from stompboxparts. You should build this, it's a  great phaser and an easy build.

Build Reports / Cosmo-skreddy screwdriver
November 17, 2021, 11:51:50 PM
Here is a really good one. Looking for a fuzz? Overdrive? Everything in between? This is it. A MOSFET treble booster into a si/GE fuzz face with no temperature instability and no impedance issues. This thing can scream, wail, moan and sing. It don't care about buffers or placement. The presence and tightness are great tone sculpting tool to work with any guitar/amp combo.
I really like this and wish I would have played one years ago. Matte white enclosure with no film decal. Cosmo the space dog from gotg for artwork. I really like this graphic of him versus the more cartoony images that are normally used. Build one, its out of this world lol. Another fantastic board from Brian.

Build Reports / Nebula-Wah
November 14, 2021, 10:00:40 PM
I love wah, and my byoc has so many options that I wanted something less daunting to dial in. The tearjearker is pretty much my byoc. I ended up with the sham wah on the recommendation of @Harry Klippton as he has an actual BBE Ben wah. We all know the vertex debacle hence the sham wah name. I found a used revF crybaby gcb-95 wah from my local guitar center for 48 dollars and got to work. the shell, and the power jack/in out jacks were used from the original wah. The pot is from area51 and the halo inductor came from @fig. Simple straightforward build that sounds really good. I wired the body trimmer as an external knob just like the original wah. It sits somewhere tonally in the classic clyde mccoy sound. The body knob can make it more subtle or more dramatic sounding. The other addition is the use of a foxrox wah output buffer so the wah can be placed in front of fuzz and get the full range of sweep with no oscillations. It buffer built on very also has a volume trimmer to set overal output.
I ended up flipping over the craybaby front badge and bottom plate, sanding them down and doing no film graphics. Went with nebula because she is a total badass, a total heartthrob and a total basket case. Went with a blue led as well to complete the nebula theme. Overall I'm super happy with the way the Nebul-Wah turned out. If your looking for a good sounding wah that has a lower part count and wont give you options paralysis to dial it in then give this a whirl.

Build Reports / Effectslayouts Hot Bod
November 13, 2021, 02:58:05 PM
Here is effectslayouts Hot Bod. It's his take on the old DOD fx91 bass drive. It's not super high gain so it's a low to mid gain drive but it has a clean blend for adding versatility and preserving low end. Having played this on my p-bass for several hours I can get all kinds of overdrive tones with ease. I wish more bass drive pedals had the clean blend and that there where more bass centric projects like this with the blend. Simple build, low parts count and ease to dial in make it a winner in my book.
Went with no film on light violet tayda enclosure. Went with Psylocke on the cover because simply put, she has a hot bod. And Olivia Munn...come on now.

Build Reports / Fireaxe
November 04, 2021, 11:48:13 AM
This was a giveaway from Brian earlier this year and it's a fantastic sounding pedal. It almost gives my blackface a chimey vox type clean sound, and using it in overdrive mode gives a nice pushed amp sound. the baxandall eq makes the pedal very versatile.
I went with a uv print on this one because I wanted to use a black enclosure. wanting to use stormbreaker on this (fireaxe being the name), @harryklippton suggested beta ray bill and it was a brilliant idea. really like how this one turned out.

Build Reports / Silver fox
October 27, 2021, 10:45:08 PM
A really good low/med gain od that is pretty neutral sounding and has a nice open compression. Love how Brian moved the internal trimmers for pres., bass and middle to the outside with 9mm pots. Yes I did paint the indicator on the knob white, it's silly that they don't come that way. Silver ball tayda enclosure with a pretty bodacious image of silver sable on my usual film free decal. I even used the Riami spiderman font.

Build Reports / Kompromat compressor
October 24, 2021, 10:58:24 PM
It's a fantastic sounding compressor that has a  really good clean blend. Can go from mild to full on squash. I don't have anymore ca3080s so I went with the 13700. Went with thunderbolt Ross/red hulk for the graphic. A great comp if your looking for a Dyna comp style compressor with more options. Film free decal on red tayda enclosure.
