Title: Balance other hobbies?
Post by: selfdestroyer on July 15, 2013, 04:21:49 PM
How do you guys do it.. I am pretty deep into a few other hobbies and I find it hard to bounce between them. A lot of how I do it is by the weather. There are many things I cant/wont do when the heat is over 95 degrees. I usually bring my soldering station in the house and take over the kitchen table (The wife approves) so I can get some pedals done but I hate not working on them in the garage with all my tools present.

Also, I am a photographer.. this one has been on the back burner since I hit pedal building hard. (Shameless plug http://photography.codydeschenes.com (http://photography.codydeschenes.com)) I really love to landscapes but that obviously reqieres me to go out side.. so hot summers seem to slow me down on this also.

Lastly, I am a gamer at heart and have been gaming since I got my first Atari 2600. With a bad collecting habit in place I started collecting and repairing/modding gaming consoles. Here is an older pick of about 75% of my collection. (http://www.evolvingconsole.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Arcade_Consoles.jpg (http://www.evolvingconsole.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Arcade_Consoles.jpg))

And the most important for last. My wife of 14 years has been a great inspiration and support for me. She does not necessarily "get" my hobbies/obsessions but she understands the need for them and supports them as best as she can. With each of my hobbies she contributes in her own way. With the Pedal building, she helps with design and colors/knob schemes and like watching me get so excited that I want to hear the thing as soon as the last wire is placed. With the photography its a way for her to get out of the house and drive around with me to find interesting places the shoot. It usually turns into eating out also. With gaming there is not much she can do other than watch me play if she wants.. she is not a player bu any means. She does like some of the more cinematic games like recently "The Last of Us" and the "Uncharted" series.

All in all I would like to know how you guys/gals balance your hobbies & family.

Luckily for me i only have two hobbies really, pedal building, and playing guitar although I am full time degree student in the Uk, on a very demanding Guitar specific course. I am also solely a working musician, at the moment i'm away on a gig for 4 months. So for me it is a weird one, i have three main aspects to my life, all different and all completely linked, all hobbies/all work i guess!

Again, for me I am very lucky in the way that my future wife is a professional vocalist, and is very understanding, and lets me get away with filling the house with more gear than i need. But she is also away on this gig, so that's a bonus too.

Sometimes i find it very hard to juggle, degree, pedals, guitar and work. But, you just gotta do it!

May i also add, sweet jesus that's a lot of games! As someone who has spent two years battling with RSI in both wrists/Elbows, i can safely say, that room would destroy me! ;)

My competing hobbies typically balance themselves out, oddly enough.

Beside my pedal building desk is my fly tying desk, so I alternate between the two by rotating my build chair (i.e get frustrated with a build, swivel over and tie a dozen flies, etc).

Since fishing season only runs from about May through October here, if it's a nice day, I'll be out on the river as opposed to hiding in my basement (that won't happen this year, as recent floods have absolutely destroyed my favourite spots).

Photography is a joint thing my wife and I do together, and almost all of it involves mountains, rivers, flowers, or animals, so we set up road trips for exactly that purpose.

My wife's very supportive of my hobbies, though she doesn't understand them, because they keep me fairly grounded in an otherwise fairly high stress life I function in on a day to day basis.  The biggest problem with my hobbies is that most of them involve me sitting at a desk, and I do that all day anyway, and my gut is getting far too big to not start getting some outdoor hobbies.

Usually I obsess over something until I no longer get enjoyment out of it and then move on. Usually that moment comes when I feel like I've exhausted everything that can be had out of a hobby short of doing it professionally. I actually did try to do writing professionally, but just like anything else artistic it generally comes down to either knowing someone or being so absurdly persistent -- basically, eating and breathing "selling" your art to a gatekeeper -- that you eventually "get lucky"; and successful self-publication in fiction is both near-impossible and highly, highly stigmatized in a way that simply doesn't matter in visual or audio arts. To be fair, I've never completely given up on writing (or guitar playing), which has been my "hobby" since I was like 6. But my lack of ability to obsess over writing any more is a detriment to finishing something at the moment.

My other hobbies besides pedals are cooking -- which, you know, I have to do to eat -- and playing guitar, which I have to do to test pedals.

Apart from plucking a few strings on the guitar wishing I could play like Gary Moore (well used to play anyway), I love building pedals, especially when they work first time! I got a house with the misses nearly a year ago now, so been teaching myself to cook. Good rock songs playing, cooking away, I'm in my own little world and absolutely love it!

Also, since we moved in together, I brew my own wines and ciders. Some of the best wine I've made (and the cheapest at 65p a bottle!) has been using fruit juice! The only trouble is everytime friends come over my alcohol cupboard gets raided! I generally make cider from a kit, but also had good results using apple juice and a flavour of some kind. I've got ribena cider on the go at the moment, can't wait to try it out!

Oh, and the Xbox. I love my Xbox! More of a social thing really, as I moved 40 mins away from my family and friends to get a house with her, I generally play it with my best mate over Live. Either Call Of Duty or F1 2012. With the F1 game, we do a full season in each team, 1 hour practise session, 45 mins of qualifying split over the 3 sessions, followed by a full length race! We have decided to try and visit as many of the race tracks as possible from next year onwards. I went to a motor show at one of the horse racing tracks here the other week, went in the F1 simulator they had, and got the 2nd quickest time of the day! That was a proud moment.

Haha yeah.. I only have 4 or 5 games for it and the overlays but it does not get much use.. Thats kind of my problem with the gaming hobby. It takes up a lot of room and time to organize it all. But it is really fun to get the friends together and play some classics not on a emulator but on the real thing... If I'm going to play Mario Bros. I want the blister on my thumb from the NES controller like I had when I was a kid.

Some really great comments here.. Thanks for sharing people.

This! At the moment not a lot of both as I've had to put in a lot of extra hours at work. And the weather's been real nice lately, so the weekends are mostly spent outdoors. But next thursday I'll be making some music again, jam night with my favourite rhythm section (my best friend Rene on bass and a madly talented, but unfocused drummer. He really should play in a steady band....) and a saxophone player! Nice.....

Isn't that pretty much status quo for all drummers (i.e. focus is not in the job description)?  Last drummer I had, we specifically arranged all rehearsals at his place (well, truthfully, his girlfriends, because as the joke goes, what do you call a drummer without a girlfriend?  Homeless), and he still couldn't make it to practice on time, even though he slept and ate there.

Don't get me started on drummers! I'm going to this jam night because the drummer from my regular band is in jail! (no joke, wasn't a really serious crime, but you can't just not pay so many parking and speeding tickets and then get pulled over DUI.... he's just a really dumb guy..... sigh...) Between that and our singer having some health problems and the other guitar player being on holiday my band is shot for the next couple of weeks, so the whole jam night is a pretty sweet deal!

Is anybody else here a glassblowers? I tend to avoid doing it in the summer. Usually only a an hour a week or so simple because it's too hot. It easily gets 50ÂșC in the workshop. But if I can I'll go in for 3 hours on a cool evening or morning. In the winter it's lovely coming in from the Canadian weather in to the wonderful warmth.

I've been doing it for about a year now. I only go the workshop a few hours a week so I have plenty of time for my other hobbies and work.

Note: Not me

My wife used to be into glassblowing, but that was before we got married.  She worries about me burning down the house with an unattended soldering iron, so I'm certain any firework is long behind us.

What part of Canada are you in?

Good stuff everyone.

Between guitar building, amp building, pedal building, my repair business and my "real" job as an occupational therapist I still manage to find time to cycle or run everyday. I guess exercise is more a lifestyle than hobby though.

I have to also give all the credit to my wife for supporting all my "endeavors". No way I get it all done without her full support.

I'm always busy with my pedals and amps after everyone's bedtime.  It is part of how I cope with the summer heat here in Fresno, to work from 10-midnight.   The wife and kids come first, then my ongoing work on my math degree, then pedals/amps.

I'm definitely a gamer but I don't spend much time gaming these days. I tend to buy stuff on Steam sales (usually I never spend more than $15 on a game) but I have a collection of unfinished ones waiting for me.

My next hobby is going to be drum making. I already have parts on order to make a 12x7 maple snare (something I've wanted forever).

Pedals, amps, BJJ, mountain biking, USPSA, beekeeping.

Balance? There isn't any. I obsess for periods of time on each one until I grow tired of it, and cycle to the next one in a never ending circle. All except for family, beekeeping and biking, they are my constants.
Title: Re: Balance other hobbies?

Balance?  I've never figured that out.

Guitar, playing and practicing(lots of sucking really)
Karting, racing and maintaining two 2cycle karts for me and my son
Pedal building, man can this one chew up some time
oh yeah, wife and two kids.
TV.. though I have less time for it lately, I do TiVo a few series
Exercise, which I don't seem to have time for at all

There just isn't enough time in the day for it all.  Sometimes I find myself obsessing over something new, which is not good, so I try to put boundaries on how much time something gets.

Priorities like family first usually sort themselves out, like, I want to build more pedals, I need to spend some time with the kids.  Or I can rebuild that clutch later, but I know in a few years by oldest will want to go to the drive in with the ladies, not me, better build those memories now.

Nookie or catch up on the Tudors, is that really even a question?  Ok, maybe for like two seconds

Inevitably I screw up priorities, but they do seem to straighten themselves out.

I was heavy into archery hunting for many years.  The past couple of years it has been hard to get out after work with young kids waiting at home for me :)  The other day I went to pull my bow back for the first time in two years and couldn't do it in a reasonable fashion.  Archery requires a unique set of muscles that I've got to tone up again.  I need some quiet time in the sanctuary of the woods!

I do a terrible job of balancing pedal tinkering with other hobbies. I spend a lot more "me time" messing around with the 3D printer I built last year, and wiring up contraptions for the Arduino to control, than audio circuits. And a couple months ago, we got a brand new piano. Given the choice of keeping the company of solder fumes or Chopin... well, the queue is pretty expansive. I think this will change some when school starts again, because my youngest will be in full day kindergarten. It will be bittersweet, but there's a chance to strike a more productive balance.

I guess for me the core of my hobbies/interests have always been music/guitar, food/cooking, and travel/learning about other cultures and languages. The latter was even the basis of my career path for a while (grad student in anthropology, then research analyst for an international broadcaster). That's when I had the most seamless integration between my work and my interests, but it also meant that from about 1999 to 2004 I barely played guitar or learned about music (except for the Lao and Thai music industries, part of my field research). Since that time I've been back into music and gear full-bore.

Family life means any time for hobbies is short but sweet. That's good for me though--it balances out my natural tendency to geek out over something so bad that I get exhausted from it.

Summer is definitely more outdoor time, plus the faculty at the college where I work are away and I can't work in the electronics lab over lunch like I do during the school year. On the flip side, it's the time when I can actually think about decorating pedals as I can be outside spray painting and the like.

Two days ago:

If I can get a license in time I'll be rallying (navigating for the guy I co-own the Juno with in his EVO) in a week and a half.

Then if all goes to plan, to the Nurburgring a couple of days after that in a Caterham.

There might not be a great deal of pedal output for a few weeks from me.

Nurburgring GP I'm guessing, as if Spa's in there and I've missed it, I'll be gutted (big Forza fan). I'll be having a play on the Nurburgring Nordshlife in a couple of weeks all being well. Seeing as I only have 6 laps in there, I'll be hitting Forza hard in the meantime to try and figure out where it goes.

Yeah, the Nurburgring one.

But the SPA track looked like fun. I'm beginning to think that my arcade style Forza racing (I don't go full sim, I suck at it) is nothing like the real thing. Must be quite the Adrenaline experience.

Post by: juansolo on July 18, 2013, 07:12:45 PM
Forza is about the best driving game out there for me. I'm one setting off full sim and that's purely on the steering as you can't use that setting properly without a wheel. On the setting I'm on though, it's 'feels' right on the pad. Applying corrections and power is really intuitive. Braking is an issue without feedback, but you learn to listen for that rather than feel it. It also makes a decent game of it (something they forgot to do with the later Gran Turismo games).

Still, no they don't really compare to the real thing. The sheer sense of speed doesn't even work in videos when compared to in-car.

...and Spa... Spa is the most sublime race track I've ever driven (mainly because I can't get to Japan to drive Suzuka). Utterly brilliant place.

Well I wasn't until last weekend :) Colin's navigator dropped out, I (foolishly?) suggested that if he couldn't find anyone else I'd fill the seat so he could at least go rallying... Got a license and a helmet in the week (already had the overalls for the other car [a page back]) and had an hour overview of reading pace notes. It went well considering :)

I really enjoyed it. It's all a lot more extreme than it seems in the footage.

You sir, are a badass. I got in a rally car once, and I guarantee it will never happen again.

Hey! This is one time that you're actually playing with the pedals.  ;D
And faster than any of us! Very cool Juan!

That was a freshly shawn sheep. Another was behind it and thankfully changed it's mind. Which is quite surprising as they're usually bloody minded buggers.

I laughed out loud when I saw the sheep.

I also expected there to be more drifting.

4WD on slicks on tarmac. Most of the time drifting is slower. There are odd moments in other stages and odd bits of handbrake use for some really tight corners. But mostly it just grips and goes.

It certainly looks like it! The acceleration is what makes it look mad. It's got to be totally intense actually physically in the car. Is that G's on the readout on the left?
Title: Re: Balance other hobbies?
Post by: juansolo on August 03, 2013, 09:04:21 PM
Yeah that's a G meter. The Juno can pull over 2G on the brakes and through corners. The Evo not quite so much but it does have massive traction and is very low geared so accelerates very quickly indeed, but tops out at around 120mph.

I got back from Germany yesterday, not sure I should post the vid for this one as it's a bit dull in comparison to the last two. This is another car that's massively low geared, not to mention I'm not exactly thrapping it for reasons below:

a) It was 37 degrees Celcius and I'm wearing Colin's fleece that's about 6 sizes too small (have to have covered arms and legs, though they can't see that I'm wearing shorts).
b) I'm quite a large man in a very small car. I do not fit in it very well at all. I can change gear or turn left, not both at the same time as my knee is in the way of the steering wheel when it's on the clutch. Removing my foot from under the clutch is not a quick process.
c) It's not my car and I really didn't want to break it.
d) I still have no f**king idea where the track goes.

As such you'll be seeing: interesting gear changes, random lines, bizarre wheel sawing, short shifting and cruising up the long fast bits (the car as well as the driver was getting VERY hot).

But it boils down to mainly being too fat for a Caterham these days.

Sadly that's probably it for the year now. Just got some odd jobs to sort on the Juno then that'll be put away.

hahah... I totally recognized most of that course! I kept wondering why you wouldn't go faster, and I realized that it's totally different to race that track in a pretend GT class car vs real life in that littler Caterham.

Anyway, thanks a lot for sharing Juan, I enjoyed it at least.

Yeah, it's not quick to say the least. They reckon you need about 100 laps just to learn where it goes. I've done about 12...

Is parenting considered a hobby?  Please say yes..

Parenting is more of a full time gig.  This  from the father of 3 boys under 13.  Grand parenting I believe is a hobby however.

Maybe that depends on how far apart they are?  I have three, a four year old son, a 2-and-a-half year old son, and an 8 month old baby girl.  They are spaced about 20 months apart and we found that 3 was more than twice as hard as 2 for the first few months, but as they get bigger it is getting easier.  Our 4 year old is really helpful most of the time now.  Seeing things are getting easier we are going to try for four God willing.

Having more then one, for me, is just totally incomprehensible, both my brother and sister have four, it is not a hobby!

I have a 14 month old.  For me personally, everything revolves around him.  If he's sick, bad mood, not eating properly, not sleeping properly etc etc, decides entirely on how much i can get done, whether it be pedals, house work, going to the toilet, or even one of my new favourite things to do, play with him on the rug infront of the tv!

I cant imagine having another one at this point.  Its not his fault.  Its my fault.  I'm too focused on hobbies!  I wouldnt replace him for anyting and we probably will have atleast one more because i think its not fair on him to grow up with no siblings.

I couldnt get my head around having 4 though... +1 respect right there.

Supposedly, three is the most stressful. (We just had our third nearly a month ago, the others are 3 and 5)

Juan,  you are living my dream.  I used to own an 04 us spec STI.  I really miss that car.  I've always wanted to rally.

I do get to go karting with my kid every weekend though.  70 mph with no suspension and my butt 1/2 inch off the ground is pretty good though.  Some day Ill do some rally.

I have no plan for kids but hearing about my grandparents stories of them and their siblings it seems crazy. My granddad was the youngest of 13 children! All from the same couple... I can't even imagine looking after a single person.

Had a WRX myself a while back. Great cars but they were stolen a lot over here. I got rid when I interrupted someone trying to break into the house to steal the keys for it... Loved it while I had it:

karting is bonkers, especially in the fast stuff. I'm a little too large for that thankfully ;)

I got busy learning about front wheel drive the past few weeks when the slave cylinder/throwout bearing self destructed in my wife's (she is now claiming it is mine) Focus.  The clutch had been slipping a bit under hard acceleration and when I got in there and saw the hydraulic fluid/clutch dust slime coating on everything it was pretty apparent why.  The fix severely cut into pedal time as removing the tranny involved disassembly of much of the engine bay and supporting bits.  It got a new slightly lighter/stronger Exedy clutch and flywheel, new slave/bearing assembly, new axle seals, new HD lighter weight axles, new ball joints, and a new battery as the old one croaked once out of the car for the duration.  Drove it to school tonight for the first class of Calculus II and it is a whole different car now.  Got to take it easy for the first 500 miles on the clutch before I really hammer it, but there is a lot more pep in that 2.3L's step.  I am feeling pretty happy though it definitely threw the whole family/pedals balance way outta whack for a bit.

This is how I balance my hobbies

Range in the morning. Decent grouping considering my .380 has a 1 3/4 inch barrel. The few strays are from working on drawing from a concealed holster.

It's laser cut plexi I had cut at a trophy shop. I scribed a square into the enclosure and drilled holes on the inner perimeter. Then I popped it out and filed it to the scribed line.   The bypass indicator will light it up nicely ;D

I'm still unsure if I'm going to paint it and have the light shine through the paint. Like make it look like there is nothing there, but when engaged it will appear.
