Title: Phase 67.5
Post by: billstein on August 12, 2013, 08:28:31 PM
I was deciding between a Phase 90 and 45 then thought... DECIDE! When you build pedals the only obvious conclusion is BOTH. Even if you didn't ever think you needed a Phaseshifter it is both, plus the StageFright I'm now waiting to box up. So even if I don't need a Phaseshifter I've built at least 3. (Weird hobby :) )

But what to name it? It's less than a Phase 90 because there is a Phase 45 in there and its more than a 45 because of that 90. So, split the difference! The Phase 67.5.

Edit: Probably should mention that the Phase 90 is a board I etched from Tonepad and the Phase 45 is Stomptown's Galacticon.

I'm lovin' this.

I need a sound demo with everything running.

That looks amazeballs, and the name is fantastic. I want one of these with separate loops so I can have a phase 90 before dirt and a phase 45 after it...
*runs off and steals all of billstein's ideas* mwu-ha-ha-ha!!!

*edit* God damn, I just noticed how close the power and input jacks are to one another... if I tried to measure and drill for that, it would be a total disaster. I don't know how you guys are so economical with space, it really impresses me

It was pretty tight. I couldn't use the box type for the output jack because it wouldn't fit around the stomp switch. I measure carefully, drill with much reservation, and then feel very blessed when it actually works out.

Man, I have been planning one of these for a while. I have the PCB's and everything. Also I can't see larger pictures because imageshack wants me to sign in and I don't have an account, and it's a pita to create one on my phone.

I don't know why ImageShack does that? Can be frustrating.

thank you, you probably won't believe when I tell you I was planning a Van Halen-esq design for mine as well. That looks great.

Thanks for the kind words guys.

A couple asked for a sound demo. I'll try to get to that at the end of the week.

Man, do I dig this build.  Great graphics, guts and wonderful knob choice.  This is just fantastic.

The only thing I would change is the white stomp washers.  It would look better with the little stainless steel washers from PPP.  I'll send you a couple if you promise to put them on this.  :-)

Wow! Thanks for the encouraging words. Sure I'll take the other washers. Didn't know there was options like that. I'll PM you.

Nice build! What does it sound like?

One thing though, wouldn't 45 and 90 make 135?

Ok. Here is my thinking and like a joke that needs to be explained, it probably wasn't a good idea.

But here goes. It's more than a Phase 45 because the 90 is in the box too. It's less than a 90 because the 45 is there. So I figured I'd split the difference which would be half of 45 or 22.5. 45 + 22.5 = 67.5. More than 45 less than 90. In my warped thinking that just made perfect sense. But probably not.  :)

Just don't get 5150ed  ;D

BTW did I mention that I like this build?

That's really nicely done, classy looking. I didn't think I needed a phaser  either, till I started building them....key word there being 'them'  :D

2 words...stage fright. Build it! I'm working over the design in my head for my 45 / 90 combo now. bought the paint too. Now I just gotta build it!

Wait till you guys discover flangers ;) All these different phasers have different 'sounds' to them, as well. Opto sounds different to FET sounds different to OTA... (The SF is my least-favourite phaser, I still haven't boxed it up three months on. LP Doppelganger is best, with the 45 a close second.)

I've got the Stage Fright populated, just need to box it up now. I like it a lot, very different sounding than the 45/90.

I'm looking forward to building a flanger. I have the current lover board on the pile of boards waiting to be populated. Eventually I'd like to build a Doppleganger. Are the boards still available?

I'm not that impressed right now with the 45 I have in this build. There seems to be a lack of depth. Hopefully it just needs different transistors. I ordered a pair from Jacob which will be shipped as soon as he gets back from vacation.

I'm not sure if there are any dopplegangers floating around but AlanP did make the project open source through oshpark so you could order one. You actually get three when you order through them and you could easily sell the other two PCB's on the forum. Here is the link:

BTW: I love your build! Great looking homage to EVH!

Thanks Stomptown and thank you for the Galacticon board. Really nice. I can't wait to get the new transistors to bring out more of it's potential. I MUST have that sound I've heard others get in their build.  :)
