Title: Strange Input Jack Issue
Post by: Guybrush on August 26, 2013, 09:33:59 AM
Hey.

One of my older builds has just developed a strange problem.

When the input jack is fully inserted I'm getting no sound other than a strange whirring noise but when it is only partially inserted it works fine.

Has anyone any ideas on what might be causing this?

A couple of photos to help explain.

Doesn't work:

Work's fine:

Thanks

Does it happens with other cables?

I have had it happen with stereo socket and mono jack, never mono to mono...seems weird.

Have you tried bending the contact a bit?

Looks like you're using solid wire and its routed between your lug and the plug.  When the plug is fully inserted, you may be flexing that wire causing a fracture over time.

Hard to tell for sure from your pic, but is it possible that the excess wire on the tip lug is touching the sleeve portion of the plug when inserted fully? Even if it's just barely touching, that would be enough to short out the circuit, and/or make strange sounds. Sometimes, too, the jacks get gunked up at that 'V' on the tip. You might try cleaning it and/or taking a nail file or fine sandpaper to it. In the end, it might be easier just to replace the jack.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I'll work through your suggestions and fingers crossed one of them will do the trick.

Thanks again.
