Title: Recommendations for an amp build
Post by: Govmnt_Lacky on November 21, 2013, 05:22:34 PM
So I found a pretty cool old Zenith radio that I want to gut (nothing of interest inside  :-\) and reuse the speaker and housing for an IC-based or small amp build. I plan on putting my Sansamp GT2 build inside as well. So.....

Can anyone recommend a good amp circuit to install into it to run with the GT2 for the OD/Distortion? I've built a Ruby but I can never really get it to clean up to my liking. I would like something that is pretty clean so I can use the GT2 for the dirt. Something with just a single Volume control. I would also prefer to stay away from the tubes and sub min-tubes as well but will consider them if it will be clean.

Suggestions??

Out of Stock until 2014  :-\

And... its a 20W amp!  :o

This is just a small radio speaker. Dont want to run a cab or anything. This will be a small speaker in a small-ish box for portability and practicing.

Thanks for the help though  ;)

I have a Tiny Giant Kit if you want to buy it. It doesn't look like I'll end up using it.

Sounds like a fun project. I actually have a old Sony radio next to me that I was going to do the same thing to. Its old looking but not old enough to be cool on the inside for parts. Might want to check out this place http://www.techniguitare.com/-projets- (http://www.techniguitare.com/-projets-)

There are some great little amp projects on there and transfers if you can etch your own boards.

The TGA can push up to 20W, but it depends on the impedance of the speaker, and you do not have to push it to 11 ;D

I have not built mine yet, but I bought it for the very same reason as you (to have "a small speaker in a small-ish box for portability and practicing"). It's unavailable for now, but — hey, look, Jacob replied while I was typing!

Are both the Tiny Giant and the Deacy pretty clean amps? Also, I know the GT2 has a LOT of output. Will they support that well?

@Jacob.... Would you be interested in any trades?

There is a big thread about the TGA here (http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=89687.0) if you'd like to read more about it, but yes, it's precisely just a clean amp, with no drive or EQ.

How about nzCdog's lil watter? Ok, its two pots and a switch... and a tube. But its a great circuit. I built one with sounclips and stuff here:

nzCdogs original project thread here:

Thanks Bengt. I really want to keep it to a 1 knob amp due to the fact that I only want a Volume control and the existing radio only has 5 holes (4 go to the GT2 as I will be keeping the other switching internal)

As of now, it looks like the Tiny Giant is my only option.

@Jacob... Pm me with what you would like for it. Also, if you are interested in trade bait of any kind  ;D

Maybe a submini tube amp like Murder One? It in particular doesn't involve the dangerously high voltage that others do.

I believe MOD goes all the way down to a 6" speaker. Last year i was going to do the ole amp in a radio project. Never found a good radio. Im trying to get my music store to sell me this old tweed guitar amp that will get a tiny giant or firefly

Did you consider the amps on runoffgroove?  You could probably replace the gain control with a trimpot.
