Title: Slow gear clone
Post by: Matt on January 07, 2014, 05:27:53 AM
My latest successful Oshpark board, a Boss Slow Gear clone.  The outside isn't anything great, I just reused an enclosure from a  Distortion+ clone that I had laying around.

It's late so I didn't get to mess with it much yet, but I was getting some sweet sounds with a slide.  Can't wait until the weekend so I can really sit down and mess with it.

Also realized that that I mislabeled the "sens" knob as "sense."  Luckily it's just marker so it'll be an easy fix.

That's a circuit I haven't messed with yet. Now it's on the todo list, as I'm learning slide these days.

I had an original Slow Gear, which was cool, but didn't work great with Bass.
Sold it and bought a VB-2 instead ;)

In any case, is this a straight clone? orany changes?
Looks great! :)

Just a straight forward clone, true bypass of course.

I might redo the enclosure sometime.  I really need to get a laser jet printer for labeling.  The ink jet I have prints poorly on adhesive film.

I always wanted to do a project with the slow gear but BYOC already has a kit for it.

Really nice little design you did there!

Awesome! Any chance you'd be sharing the OSHpark project, or have a spare board up for grabs?

I'd definitely build this one :)

Thanks!  Yeah, I wish they'd sell just the boards.  I would have bought this one from them.

That's cool, thanks.
I've just ordered 3, so I'll have two spare if anyone wants one, preference given to Aussies and Kiwis. ;)

Just in case anyone needs it for troubleshooting.

Also, i haven't tried it yet but supposedly changing the value of C16 will adjust the attack.  The GGG schematic has a 470n for the stock value BYOC has a 680n.  Someone (i forget who) suggested putting a 1uf on a switch.

Yeah, this is one of those pedals I've always wanted to try, but never end up getting around to it.  I may finally give it a shot.  Thanks for sharing this  8)

any suggestions for setting the trimmer?

I've got this built, but not getting a huge amount of swell yet...

Ggg site says to set the sensitivity to noon and the attack all the way up. Then set the trimpot so that their is little to no volume drop between on and bypass.  To be clear, don't worry about the swell, just the overall effect level.  Then you should be good to go.

I did mine a bit differently because when I used the above method, there was a small portion of the attack at ccw that was unusable.  So I set the attack to full ccw, the sensitivity to noon and dialed in the best swell without volume loss.  FWIW.

I just ordered a set of three and will have two spares, if anyone in EU wants one. Or two.

Anyone who's built this willing to post a clip? I've always been curious about these and have thought about doing one.

I have a TC Nova Dynamics that can be dialed to do this type of effect. I've wondered how close it comes to the slow gear.
