Title: NP(up)D
Post by: juansolo on January 17, 2014, 08:50:12 AM
New pups in the StratSG. I really should have cleaned it better before the photos, but I finally got one that showed the carved top and it was propped up on the duster so the likelihood of me being able to clean it and take as good a pic again was low...

Anyhow, sacrilege as this may be, I'm loving these new EMGs. Worlds away from EMGs of old, they're not scooped, compressed or dry sounding (we back-to-backed them with some of Cleggy's EMG equipped guitars). Instead they sound like passives, but with all the clarity, taughtness and attack of actives. Didn't expect to swap out BKPs with EMGs of all things!

I am shocked at the sight of that guitar. Seriously man that thing screams alternative music without the need for pointy ends or a beer holder.

It's the transparent satin finish, has to be :)

Beautiful gat, but how will you post in the BKP forum again?

Discretely, as I just have  ;)

Though I have just realised I'll be down to one fully BKP'd guitar (that isn't changing) and there's one that'll only have one in shortly  :o

I'm not rebelling against them you understand. They're awesome sounding pups, there's just other things out there that are also interesting...

The noises I make with it are certainly an alternative to music ;)

Plus the pointiness is inferred by the carve. One of the things I love about it. When I asked Wez to make it I said I wanted a non-pointy super strat (which is an oxymoron) with a mahogany body and a wrap around bridge, the rest is up to you.

Seriously man that one is a looker. I love it. SGs are my thing you know, and teles. And Fano guitars [which I will probably never get].
Your's has been done with a lot of taste, it's pretty yummy.

It's the whole mash-up thing I've got going on when I ask Wez to make something. That was not quite an SG or a Strat. The other was not quite a Strat or a Tele. Keeps things interesting  ;D

Looks terrific with the covered EMGs(Blasphemy!! ;) )

After our little chat the other day, been listening to couple clips and i have to agree that they seem to be far more dynamic than the usual 60/81/85.

Glad you like 'em, i now have another BKP on his way :D

More new puppage:

I was lacking any P90age so have swapped out the BKP Mule (PAF clone) in the Badger with a Oil City Mighty 90 (a custom one he did that has both an A2 and A4 mags). It's got a similar thickness and output to the Mule, but with more single coil sparkle and top end. Liking it a lot.

I've also fitted two batteries to the StratSG to 18V the EMGs for extra headroom. Smashing.

More impressive is that now I've sold the original 3 BKPs, the whole exercise has cost me the grand total of £3.70. Gotta love cheap fettlage.

So Oil City is cutting it?

Do you EMG behave correct with Fuzz?

Yeah. Biggest complement I can give it is that it's every bit as good as a BKP, but at half the price (well less, as I snagged one he was selling off that he'd made for stock that wasn't a production model). I might snag a Scrapyard Dog bridge and Blitz Spirit neck while he's still this cheap and a one man operation. Because if he gets known and has to get staff/premises, the price is only going one way.

Good question, I haven't tried them with a fuzz face/bender. Likely they wont as they're essentially buffered.

Well, i guess that i'll have to contact Mr Oily! :)

If it can be cheaper and as good than the BKP set i wanted for the MJW Tele...

BKP are ordered... but easy to flip  :D

On the strength of this one pickup of his I've tried, I'd say yes. But bear in mind, I've only tried one...

He's TheGuitarWeasel on The Fretboard (http://www.thefretboard.co.uk/profile/19/TheGuitarWeasel) if you want to throw him a PM.

Thanks! A bit of conversation should give some good guidelines.
