Title: What pots to use for Afterlife and Cave Dweller in a 1590A?
Post by: AntKnee on January 31, 2014, 04:29:35 PM
Afterlife compressor and Cave Dweller delay in my near future. Ordering parts now... What pots work best here? I have plenty of 16mm, but should I go with 9mm? Will pc mounts work on these boards in a 1590A? I tried looking at build photos but the pots are always covered.

Your questions in order:

Just a side note. If you are ordering the 9mm pots from Tayda don't get the cheap ones. Look close at them, there is no mounting nut or threads. I made this mistake once and now have half a dozen useless pots.

You want these ones...or similar from another supplier.

-Cave Dweller-

-Afterlife-

I usually get these an put a 2x3 piece of vero on them then wire it up.

They dont have solder lugs. Is there a seperate connector?

page 11 of the 1590 build guide: http://www.madbeanpedals.com/downloads/BabyBoardGuide.pdf

and pickdropper's guide: http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=8671.0

I bet you could find the answer to a lot of questions there.

Thanks!
...and...
Crap!
I ordered all 1/4 watt resistors, guide calls for 1/8 watt.
Is it to save space? Can I get away with 1/4 watt?

1/4 watt will fit, but they will stick up in the air a bit (maybe 45 degree angle, not straight up), whereas 1/8watt will be flat against the board.

This will complicate your vertical clearance, unless you've got capacitors, IC's, and transistors that are the same height. In which case hell with it, you've got to manage that clearance anyway then.

BTW, electrical tape on the back lid will probably be necessary.

you can get away bending the resistor legs:

this way: (http://i401.photobucket.com/albums/pp92/thebodger/Sealey%20Milller/Power%20Drive%202/IMG_2003.jpg)

or this other way:

or like pickdropper did in his latest 1590 build (look at the resistor next to the blue trimpot):

(pickdropper is one of the 1590A masters here :))

but I agree with Alan, if this is your first 1590A build I recommend you to reorder the resistors and save those you bought for other builds

I am going to reorder parts, basically starting over on another order.
I'll be getting different jacks, pots, power, resistors, caps...

Thanks for all the help!

I recommend these for 1590A builds. I've only done a few but any space in the enclosure saved is good. Good luck man, and don't let this thing get the best of you! It can be very frustrating!

Thats exactly what I ordered, just from somewhere else.
Thanks!
