Is it "bad" to like larger enclosures? I get it that if you are a gigging musician with a ton of pedals you want them to be smaller for obvious reasons. I also get that they are cheaper and "greener".....
....but...kind of like albums, there is something cool to me about larger pedals. I think it has to do with the real estate for the graphics and freedom for customization.
Of course there is no denying that it takes more skill to fit this stuff in as small as an enclosure as you can and maybe larger enclosure screams "rookie"....
Just curious what people's thoughts on this were.
The whole "1590A craze" is really just a fad. Like hipsters and their PBR, this too shall pass. ;D
I like bigger and with end mounted jacks. 125B is the same board width as the 1590A. I really wish that a 125B height 1590BB footprint box were more commonly available (for cheap). Also, I like all the weird boxes, like the stop sign and trapezoidals. It's just more fun that way.
Yeah, I don't buy into "make it as small as you absolutely can", though I certainly appreciate the work of those that do.
I end up putting effects into the boxes I have in stock, so if it calls for a 1590B, but I have a really sweet 125B on hand and I really like the effect, that's the way I go.
As far as pedal board real estate, unless you have tiny feet, you still realistically have to have a certain distance between stomp switches, so the A to B space argument makes a lot of sense on paper, but not so much in an active pedalboard.
I actually think there isn't enough love for taller enclosures. For dual effect builds, I am increasingly going towards 125BB enclosures (same footprint as a 1590BB with the height of a 125B), because it gives me a little extra room to mount the jacks. Point in case, I recently built a MP Jr/Tenebrion two in one, and in a 1590BB it would have been possible, but with a lot of careful planning and no f-ups in measuring, whereas with a 125BB it was a breeze, even though I had to measure the pot spacing to the mm, as the two boards side by each are almost exactly the same width as the interior dimension of the box.

125BB and 1590BB are the same price from PPP, and actually cheaper if you buy 10 (the price break for 1590BB is at 25).

FWIW, there's only one 1590A on my main pedal board, and I don't have to stomp on it because it's always on.
Damn convenient for storing as many as possible on the toy shelf, though!

The only reason for making 1590As as far as I'm concerned is so they take up less storage space. Otherwise they're an almighty pain in the arse. They unstable when used in anger unless bolted down, if you wedge them next to each other they're too close together for easy stompage, they're a pain to make and you can't use nice stomps in them.
BUT
They can also, sometimes, be quite good fun to build. In a masochistic sort of way.
For me the 1590B is the perfect sized enclosure.
I really like those tiny boxes for utility types of things.
I've made a few microbox effects, just to challenge myself. It was a challenge, but not very rewarding.
Similar to Jon, I have one 1590A on my board (a Blue Clipper). Unless I'm running clean, it's always on.
Otherwise the 125B is my go to box.

I like the 1590A builds for the challenge but the 1590B is the size I gravitate towards. If the 125B wasn't so tall... I will say that larger enclosures look great though and again I gravitate towards larger enclosures without too much added height. I was actually just looking at Jacobs Zero Point Delay build and I was marveling at his enclosure choice. Same width of a 1590BB but square instead of rectangle. Really seems like the perfect size for that build. Not cramped and not over-sized either. What kind of enclosure is that anyway? Jacob? Here is the build report for those interested:
http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=11284.msg101637#msg101637
1590Q.
My choices are really simple, and basically I will only use the following unless I can help it:
Single size - Single/double Size - Single/Double Size - Double Size - Double/Triple/Quad Size
125B 125BB 1590Q 1790NS 1590DD
1590B 1590BB 1590D/J
2.7"w 3.7"w 4.7"w 5.7"w 6.7"w (or more)

I would love to see a 125B that's slightly less tall. Taller than 1590B, but not as tall as 125B.
That would be my Goldilocks enclosure size. ;D
1up for larger pedal enclosures. I recently picked up a DOD 680; that enclosure size was great. Especially good for when the SAD4096 is dead and you have to retro-fit an MN3205 in there. Plenty of real estate to work with. I'd like to find a DOD 640 now, working or otherwise.

Word.
I find them challenging. I don't really see the point in trying to squeeze a complicated effect into a 1590a if only for the challenge. Even with a basic effect I feel somewhat like a microsurgeon.
Best thing about them imo too is the small storage footprint. Im running out of shelf space in the study :o

Here is the closest thing I can find: Hammond 1550B (4.51"x2.52"x1.01")
For reference, a 125B is 4 5/8" x 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" so it pretty much fits the bill perfectly!
Only $6.50 at Mouser!!!

Here is a pic of the 1550B. Unfortunately I just realized it is slightly shallower than a 1590B. It will work fine if you use low profile electrolytics caps but might be problematic otherwise. Not quite in the Goldilocks zone but close... :)
Really glad this topic turned out hehe. Been thinking the same for quite some time, however I did have a 1590A run a while back but quickly deserted that style of enclosure. It just showed that my 1590As are not that reliable, I'm no pickdropper..
Okay yeah, a couple of my friends are doing really big gigs with 1590a pedals that I made for them, but those are SHOs...
I really like slanted enclosures, and something like those cool old fuzzes that have totally unnecessary big enclosures. It's just cooler, have much more room for graphics, and it's something that boost self-esteem even, a little...kinda...I mean it's not the same feeling when you're stomping on a tiny pipsquick 1590a turd and when you don't really think about it you just put your foot on that big box, not fearing that you're gonna turn it over, and you feel more like that pedal is a very important part of your stage appearance and of course sound. I tend to bring big boxes to a rehearsal more often than small cause their size kinda makes it serious for me, they are the chosen ones, the golden ones, whereas with those tiny pedals I just feel like I am using some sort of a cheat I don't know it's totally subjective and irrational, but it's where I stand. Cheers

EDIT: sorry, I misunderstood the whole thing. This one is a taller 1590BB...
The 1590BBS is a great size for multi-builds or really big pedals. They are pretty much the size I'd like to see more available, but they are hard to come by (Mouser only?), so they cost a bit.

just finished a fuzz in one of those and have a Nautilus I am boxing in one as well. I bought them off a guy on Ebay. Shipping is a little high for just one but you can get as many as you like for the same shipping price.

unless there is somewhere cheaper that you have seen? These are pretty heavy duty duty. The only thing is that the holes in the back are predrilled. That could either be a good or bad thing
Here is the Fuzz I did with tolex covering on the bottom/sides. Overkill space wise? Sure, but I like big!
I actually like the height of the 125B, primarily for top mounted jacks. I am refitting whatever pedals I have with side mount jacks to top mount so I can put them side by side on the board. It also makes label design much easier when I just stick with one size. I did recently order a couple of 1590A enclosures, not sure what for actuallyl. ;D

That is really excellent looking and I love the Tolex. Very classy.
How did you do the graphics on the steel face?
Yeah, the height of the 125B is as low as I'll go really. It's perfect for top mounted jacks, and if your foot complains that it's 3/8" higher to lift and stomp on it, I'm a bit curious really, you can thread the stomp switch down 1/4" so it's closer to the enclosure, and the switch still fits internally...
I recently did some 1590B builds... which reminds me why I like the 125B best.

thanks! I use clear waterslide decals. I really have a love/hate relationship with this method. I use an inkjet printer so maybe that has something to do with it. Not sure if having to clearcoat the decal before you dunk it in water (unlike laser jet) has any affect on it but I have a problem with creases towards the edges. Maybe it's the brand of waterslide I am using? Don't know. My heart starts racing everytime I have to do it though.
+1 on the tolex. It looks nice against the stainless.
I did my first clear water slide tonight and it came out great..thanks to the many posts I read beforehand.. This DIY thing is really all about standing on the shoulders of giants! Still want some of those enclosures...

You doneed to clearcoat the decal if it is inkjet.
I really dont get that ultra small package. I mean just how many pedals do you really need on a board?
I really like the bigger enclosures, I have even made one from an art tube preamp enclosure for my kingslayer. Which is unnecessary large. (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/03/01/ge3yqe7y.jpg)
I see why you want to make one, because you are bored or need the challenge. But every one?
I guess Im a bit old school regarding my board pedals. I 3 drives, reverb, delay and a fatpants. All above that is really just for show :-)
Here are some boxes a friend and I just made. Based on the EHX Russian boxes. We changed a couple of the angles a bit and kept the lip of the bottom piece over the top so you could use veneers without needing a border. They are big and I can't imagine too many circuits that couldn't be fit in there. We had a metal fab shop make the protos but I am going to try and make them myself in the future. If the price is at all reasonable I'll look at making more models and offering them to you guys.
