Title: Name that fuzz
Post by: lincolnic on March 21, 2014, 05:18:57 AM
So I came across this gem earlier tonight, which has a completely ridiculous fuzz guitar all throughout.

The song's from 1966, so I figure it's probably a Maestro or a Tonebender, right? The kinda farty solo moment at 0:13 makes me think Tonebender, but I defer to the more knowledgeable crowd here.

My guess would be a MKIII Tonebender type, because it has that fat, sometimes gated attack on the low strings and really smooth lead tones like in the little end solo. Sounds too refined for a MKI, also different than a MKII.

EDIT: Ok, I just read that it was 1966, that's probably a MKI.

Yeah, in 66 there were only a few fuzzes around, so maestro or tonebender is a good bet. And it doesnt have that nasally tone that I'd associate with a maestro, so I'd guess tonebender. Not that I'm an expert or anything, but I have been researching early fuzz circuits lately.

Yeah, I'm thinking it's got to be a Mk I. Which is only reinforcing my desire to build one.
