Title: SpaceHarp Phaser
Post by: Haberdasher on March 26, 2014, 03:42:51 PM
Hey everyone, it has been a long time since i made a report.  Too long!

To remedy that, I present my 125b ehx small stone design (early version 1) with input buffer and output boost, using 3x LM13700.  PCB mounted pot & switch, and the awesome kobiconn jacks (top mounted in this example) make for a very clean build.
Etched faceplate with famowood glaze coat (envirotex equiv).  It was my first time using it and it came out pretty great.  I kind of wish i had put it on a little thicker but it still looks very cool in person.

I do have these pcb's for sale for any & all interested in building it.  Here is the thread (http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=14672.0) in the buy/sell trade room.

did you ship my recent etch request yet?
If not, can you send me one of these along with it please?
Otherwise, we can work something out

looks awesome!

Beautiful.  I really like white enclosures.  The graphics just pop.

I'm loving this too! It is way smaller than my Mutron Phasor is going to be (sweet etch by the way!  :)). Still though, where did you find those in/out jacks? They look about perfect for a tight build with top-mounted jacks.

Thanks, the nutron is a great phaser.  Both are nice and worth having imho.
These (http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail//161-MJ159M-EX/?qs=%2fha2pyFadugG6nxWCRzPm0lpMNHoxS2j7IjqmEbf5v5aLWJE0V%2fcLA%3d%3d) are the jacks.  They're my favorites.  AFAIK they only come in mono.

ah, gotcha.  using top mounted jacks, you could easily mount the pcb a little lower if you're worried about it.  there's quite a bit of room between the lower edge of the pcb and the stomp switch.

i have Brian's stage fright pcb here, but i haven't ever built it, so I can't compare the 2.  i have certainly heard good reviews from the stage fright though.  i like jimilee's idea though.  build.all.of.them.

Any other sources for those kobiconn jacks?

Mousers shipping to NZ kills me.

Alternatively, will standard open jacks fit?

Right.  I built the Stage Fright and it's awesome.  I'm also on the list for the new Doppelganger board.  And I think I'm going to send Keefe some business on the Space Harp too.  Do I need 3 phasers?  No.  I do not.  Do I have a phaser problem?  Not until I start stuffing more than one in the same box (JIMI!).

man, mouser is the only place i have ever found that carries them.  and i looked around some, too.
I'm getting ready to hit the hay atm, but tomorrow i'll hold up a standard neutrik to it and see what the difference looks like.  i think standard jacks would go, because i used the ggg 125 template to mark the top mount holes, and i have used that template before on other 125's and it was no problem.  the one thing i can tell you i did differently, is i moved a little farther away from the pcb to mark the holes so they were closer to the bottom plate.  just in case type of thing.

Just got my pcbs for this project in the mail :)

And +100 on the StageFright, I've built 2 of these, I own an original MP1... ...in fact i bought it from Brian, so i believe it's the one he used as reference for his work on that layout. I'd say that it's 92% dead-on, the remaining 8% is a certain behavior of the original toward your playing dynamic, it's a bit more responsive to my ears.

'Nyway... Jimilee pointed it out right, build.them.all.

well yeah, i guess as long as you keep it in the family that's not too unsavory then. ;)

@ 3secondrule:  i held a neutrik jack up to it and i think it's fine.  the neutrik sticks into the enclosure a little farther so just take your time & eyeball/measure it carefully.

However for the mono's i had in my cart, it now says 1000 pc minmum.

davent, those mono jacks show "not available" for me.  i'd love to do a group buy for those jacks but i don't know if we'd get to 1000 pieces.  I'd probably go for 100 myself, but that still leaves 900.

i've seen pics of this build with standard size side jacks and i'm fairly confident they, or any baby build types, would also work for top mounts.

I'd put them in my cart back when this thread came up so now in the cart, in red, has the 1000 min.

Just tried doing the minimum and get the not available message... so it goes.

I haven't found a demo of this one on the forum that showcases the sounds that are more on the stock side so here ya go - https://soundcloud.com/kuato-design-stompboxes/small-stone-v1-clone-demo
I'll record a proper demo, a tune, like I like to do, later when I box it.

It is a strange one, the lower speeds are just fantastic and I don't hear much of a difference to my original 77 version 2, but as you turn the speed up, it becomes more and more rotovibey, and on the higher speeds it reaches a waveform that I am not really sure I like. Luckily, I always use my phasers, small stone included, on the lower end of the dial :)
Fantastic and super easy to work with board, super easy build, lectric-fx has done a fantastic work with this one!

(https://scontent-b-ams.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xap1/v/t1.0-9/s720x720/10491284_10152653791486337_6128969358807597655_n.jpg?oh=59acca3e28aab04965d39d3446cac242&oe=54803A1B)

I got a cool slightly sparkly gold box, can't wait to put it in and then on my board. Cannot live without a small stone, small stone is the shiiiiiiiiit. :)

If you prefer the upper speeds of the V2, you can try removing C13, it acts as a low pass filter for the upper speeds to round off the wave form a bit to make them more pleasing but that's personal preference. It was only present in the V1 Small Stones.

Glad you're enjoying it! :)

so, basically, just connect the two pads on the pcb with a jumper, instead of putting C13? cool, gonna try it tomorrow. it really is quite triangular, it has a thing of it's own. I like it, although on faster speeds I prefer the version 2 waveform, but this is cool too. Still, will try C13.
also, no matter how I set the volume trimmer, the volume drop when on Color mode is a lot. I would advise, Keefe, that you make this a 3pdt in the next version, and put 2 trimers on the pcb, one for the color down sound and one for the color up sound, and then alternate between the two at the same time as when one is switching the sounds with the Color switch.
I miiiiiiight do this to my pedal but I will probably be too lazy. Still I think it would make for a fantastic next version guys.
Any other value changes that might de-triangulise it even more? Just askin'...the stock pedal is cool to with it's rotating phase sound, very unique :P

No sadly you can't just jumper it as then you'll have a short to ground. That cap pull should be enough, it's entire point is to triangulate the waveform at high speeds to make it more pleasing, not much else you can do, the LFO is what it is, that should make it hyper-triangle (the wave form you get at the slower speeds) across its entire range though.

We did consider the two trim option but found it acceptable, guess it depends on your set up though, if we do another V1 run, taken on board :)

We also have considered doing a V2 and even V3 (the model with an LM324 & 2 x LM13600) small stone but that's up to demand.
