Title: Sunking aka: Master Luke
Post by: masterlk on April 01, 2011, 02:10:37 AM
Hey folks - This is my second Madbean build and I like it a lot. I went for the basic clean K_on copy look. It's tough to take pics of the polished enclosure. Anyway, I used the 1n270's, everything else is per the build doc. I really have to thank a forum memeber, mjcyates, who helped with ordering the parts for this and my first build and giving a newbie some good pointers early on, thanks Marvin! Even though I'm a total newb the build docs and this forum made this build fire up the first time, I rocked it before I boxed it!

This was also my first etch. It's not perfect but I like the way it turned out. I think I have been bitten by the etching bug, I'll be doing more of these.

Nick

Wow nice finish... did you buff the enclosure to get it looking that smooth?

I did buff it, by hand. After all the sanding I used some stuff my dad gave me while I was back home on vacation. It was some kind of automotive polish. Worked good, there's no "finish" on the pedal so I am expecting it to get beat up pretty quick. Oh well, that's why I built it, to use it, right?

Sweet! I'm sure there's tutorials on etching hiding in other forums, but I'd read it if ya wrote one!

I'll tell you that I have read all the tutorials available and I still had a heck of a time. I will be trying a new paper that I think Brian and some others are using for their boards. It's a digital paper(not sure what that means). I hope it works better on enclosures because I love the polished look of the pedals I've seen but this was a bear to get right.

I have to have a set of these knobs for my Sagittary! Please post a link? I couldn't find any and had to settle for brown face fenders!

By the way, I forgot to mention the finish on this is great! I did something similar with an old Dunlop Fuzz Face enclosure. I used a Black & Decker Mouse Sander with steel wool stuck to the bottom of it and used Flitz for the polish compound. After about 20 minutes, I got a mirror finish. Sanded to 800 by hand, then polished with the B&D Mouse!! HEHE!! Still looks nice. Something about sanding with polish seems to impregnate the metal, if the temperature gets somewhat warm. Probably have no idea what I am talking about, but the Fuzz Face box was done 3 months ago and it still shines bright!

Great looking Klone!!

The knobs are just black davies copies...I think I got them from PPP. Since oxblood knobs are nowhere to be found I just bought a can of maroon/burgandy spray paint from Walmart. I did three thin coats of paint and then three thin coats of a clear matte finish. So thin in fact you can just barely see the black showing through on the pointer. I held the knob with a dowel rod while painting, then let air dry. When the final coat of clear was dry, I baked them in an oven for a short time. So far they have held up good.

Good luck!

Thanks Luke. I named it after my son. After we named him, friends and family were relentless with the Star
Wars stuff. So I decided to call my Sunking the Master Luke.
