Poll
Question: Would you rather waste half a 13700 or use a 3080 (where it wont add noise).
Option 1: LM13700 votes: 14
Option 2: CA3080 votes: 10
Option 3: Chocolate votes: 2
Option 4: Bacon votes: 10
Option 5: Kumquat votes: 3
Title: Poll - 13700 or 3080
Post by: Scruffie on April 26, 2014, 10:17:27 PM
This is just a general build question as i've seen it coming up quite a bit, in a case where an OTA was in a non-audio position (as some have complained of noise with them) and you only needed ONE would you rather use a 13700/13600 where at least half the chip is wasted (possibly more if you didn't use the darlingtons) OR use a 3080 to its full potential and save board space/pin soldering/whatever your reason.

And to up it, that space difference could be the difference in enclosure size of 1590BB to 1790NS (or 1590B to 125B if you prefer or 125B to 1590BB).

lm13700 and substitutes are generally much cheaper than the 3080. that's my reason. with the money for the 3080 i could buy a few lm13600, so i can have some left in the case something goes bad

CA3080, I think.

What about the BA6110 SIP? I've got a couple to play with, but haven't had the time to spend on it yet.

I bread boarded a PAIA Gator with both chips and didn't notice much of a difference in noise level. So I decided to design a PCB of this effect using the 3080 (like the original). I wanted it to fit in a 1590B and the 3080 takes up less space. I can still get these chips here in the UK and EU so availability is not a problem yet.

13700 cost about 20% of a 3080 last time I bought a 3080.

I did add the enclosure size part, the enclosure going up a size would mitigate those costs/savings.

I don't think those are still in production are they? The 13700 & 3080 both still are to some degree.

I haven't looked them much as they seemed a more obscure part.

And who voted bacon!? :P

I don't think there's a single answer to this. If space is a problem/consideration, the 3080 keeps things to 8 pins. The 13700/13600 is a much bigger chip.

For example, I chose the 3080 for the Engineer's Thumb PCB, even though the original Merlin designed called for a 13700.

However, in the Stone Cold Phaser, I'm running 3 LM13700s, and one of them is only utilizing half of the chip, but since I was already using a pair of 13700s, adding a third instead of switching to a 3080 made sense.

My vote go to 3080's, real estate is something that more than often becomes important to me. Never ran into any noise problem with them either.

In the UK getting 3080s for sensible money is still possible so that'd be my choice. However, thinking ahead, using something that's in production (this goes for all new effects) has to make more sense?

Then of course you gave us the option of bacon. When bacon is an option, it is the only option!

They are still in production, albeit on a smaller scale, by Rochester electronics, smallbear stocks them.

I don't actually eat bacon...  :-[ but it is drawing with the 13700! I think I may change the poll for 2 votes for those that were unable to resist the allure of bacon in their decision.

Edit: Apparently I can't, bacon it is!

Muffwiggler had a big group buy of 3080 chips recently (closed now.) New designs should always try to use in-production parts.

I can't wait till the stupid internet meme of baconbaconbaconholyfuckimcummingbaconbacon dies off. I prefer a good savoury or cheese scone, myself. A good one, not a crappy one that has more in common with a chocolate muffin with no chocolate.

As I said, the CA3080 are still being produced for the time being, or else I wouldn't even consider them an option (although they were produced in far greater numbers than something like an MN3005 or even 3007 as they were used a lot more widely as they don't have such a niche use).

I have no idea what that meme is... but i'd go with a good cheese (not scone) over bacon.

I had checked the Rohm website before and thought that I had seen they were still available, but checking now, I can't find them. I figured that at least the SMD version would still be in production, but I can't find those there either.

I hate bacon. I haven't tasted it in about 30 years, but I didn't like bacon even before I went vegetarian -- lard and salt.

I think they were produced specifically for Roland/BOSS.

10 years for me, I liked it young and quickly went off it, can still picture it exactly though down to texture... yuck.

I have a friend who says that the only thing keeping him from becoming vegetarian is bacon. So you're kind of a lucky person; few are so strong as to resist bacon.

I've heard that from many people, it does seem to be the game changer.

Except it mainly applies to the UK, US & Canada in my experience, a lot of europe aren't so fussed and in some countries it's not even a thing really.

I can understand the sentiment. I say the same thing about cheese and becoming a vegan myself. It is funny to me though, because after a while, the thought of the texture and feel of meat got to be very unappealing and bacon is near the top of the list probably for the very reasons that most people really like it.

I'm the exact same about cheese, that and every vegan i've met has been too preachy and I don't want to become that... I will still cook meat for others (and I can well regardless of eating it) and don't give a shit if others like it, but i'm not eating it. In fact I find i'm more often in the middle, both meat eaters and vegans pushing their side.

I found bacon better than pork before becoming one though... chicken breast I liked, steak was just vile, beef was... I wouldn't pick it.

3080 is a noisy POS. Go 13700. Easier to source, cheaper and quieter.  8)

First post specified, in a non-audio example so no added noise  ;)

But yes it is easier to get hold of and cheaper, however, if your PCB has to be bigger and your enclosure has to increase in size, you have effectively paid most likely more than the extra cost of a 3080 + shipping from a reputable source.

I do love reeses, chocolate and peanut butter is an amazing mix. As is caramel and/or chocolate and salt... bacon and chocolate topped doughnut filled with salted peanut butter and caramel... mmm

That +shipping can be a real fly in the ointment, killer if that's the only part needed and it has to be an international transaction.

Texture- my wife loves bacon but it has to be cooked board stiff or she won't eat.

On parts and cd buying trips into Toronto my goto lunch stop has been a little nearby Vegan restaurant, love their soups, salads and sandwiches... delicious and inventive!

Have a chunk of tofu in the fridge and tempeh in the freezer, for years/decades, three nights a week i have a vegetable stirfried with rice for dinner but if there's leftover cooked pork, beef or chicken from another night you can be sure my stirfry gets an extra dose of protein.

Labels can be so troublesome!

An enclosure one size up costs more to ship! (in some cases) and in the UK I have found 125Bs few and far between so they can be a pain.

Vegetarian meat substitutes (at least in the UK) actually have as much or in a lot of cases more protein than meat, I can understand in countries where it's not such an available alternative it being difficult. Tbh though I have found my cooking to become more exciting by not using them, it's very easy to stick meat in a dish to finish it, it's more interesting to get that taste without.

I hate as a veggie meat being wasted, you killed it, you damn well better eat every last bit of it, I always encourage people that complain meat is too expensive to buy cheap cuts that are generally wasted and give them recipe ideas, it's astonishing how much goes to waste from a cow or pig, hell, you can make a good stock/add flavour to a stew from the bones.

I am not a big tofu fan either, I find it bad at incorporating in to dishes and to taking flavours, I much prefer mushrooms, beans, lentils and aubergines in that roll, it can be nice, but it's too easily used as the 'meat' substitute.

I was actually referring to my brother about vegans, him and his now ex and their 'vegan forum' buddies entirely put me off it, i'd eat something with a bit of milk in and he'd say 'that's got cow puss in it' as I was eating it... I accept dairy is bad for animal welfare... but i'm not a dick ;D My parents were accepting and now basically follow a vegetarian diet (although from 15+ I did the family cooking anyway for 7 people) not cause of choice or reason, they're just happy with it years after the vegans/veggies not living with them and my girlfriend doesn't cook and I offer to cook meat but she likes the veggie dishes I cook and doesn't care and should I have them, i'll be bringing my child up eating meat (and speaking german for the GF  ;D) until they decide themselves if they want it.

I saw chocolate and salt on TV, then in a restaurant it was on the menu so I gave it a try, it really did bring out the chocolate flavour. Yet to try chilli and chocolate but after a long break from chilli (no reason, just... wasn't buying them) i'm back on them and interested, i've tried strong dark chocolate in tomato dishes and it does work very well... yet is still weird.
