Title: Resistor kits
Post by: micromegas on June 16, 2014, 11:23:58 AM
Hi folks.

Here is the thing: I have some ideas on my mind and would like to try them on breadboard and, to be able to do that, I need to have a pile of different value resistors.

Resistor and capacitor kits are hard to find in Europe  (well, Rapid has some kits, but shipping outside England is quite high...)

I did a search on Ebay for 1/4w resistors and here is what I've found so far:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MR25-Metal-Film-Resistor-Kit-1-1-4-w-E24-Top-Quality-/121336752222?ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123

I emailed the seller and he said they are ROHS compilant and from a brand called "Hitano" (I think they are from Taiwan).

any thoughts/experience on this matter?

Check http://www.bitsbox.co.uk/ they do resistor & capacitor kits with cheap international shipping by the looks of it.

I've ordered a bunch of resistor kits from China for considerably less and I had no issues with pedal building whatsoever.

That said, most of them would be pretty hard to use on a breadboard, due to flimsy leads. Not exactly Tayda flimsy but close to it. Now, these do seem to have 0,6mm leads which is the most I've ever seen in a 1/4W resistor so they may be perfectly fine. I have some Bitsbox resistors that are nice and sturdy and my calipers have them at 0,6mm as well.
I have no access to Mouser that may stock higher quality resistors but the ones in your links seem good enough to me.

Right now I'm waiting for this one to come in (should be here any day now) because I'm trying to cut back on the values I never use.

Yep, china kits are cheaper, but, as you said,  sturdy leads are something important for breadboarding.

My local distributor has Vishay resistors, but those ain't cheap.
I also buy resistors from Cromesphere (www.diyguitarpedals.com.au/shop/). Those are good quality too, but I was looking for more of a bulk price

I'll let you know how these are when they arrive soon. The price is certainly right.  ;D
