Title: Love, Hate, Guilty Pleasure...covers
Post by: flanagan0718 on June 25, 2014, 02:17:52 PM
This could get interesting. List the songs that bands have covered over the years. 1 you Love, 1 you hate, and 1 guilty pleasure (good or bad). I'll start

This is one of my favorites. Between The Buried and Me: Colorblind (Originally by The Counting Crows)

This is one that I can't stand. Killswitch Engage: Holy Diver (Originally By Dio) *I Love KSE just hate this cover*

This is pure Guilty Pleasure. Incubus: Still Not A Player (originally by Big Pun) *Back when Incubus was still good*

One I Love - Little Wing by SRV.  He typically did a really good job with Hendrix stuff, but this is my favourite, because he's manages to capture the beautiful essence of the song without needing vocals.

Other Bands who do a solid job on covers regularly

Disturbed - routinely cover songs which are "typically" in their genre

Halestorm - an EP of covers every couple of years, spanning from Fleetwood Mac to Marilyn Manson

Chris Daughtry - despite the fact I can't stand his latest disc, he's got a real knack for covers

One I Hate - err, there are a lot of bad covers out there.  As a general statement, most "contractual obligation" cover albums (i.e. throw togethers to meet the one last record requirement to get out of a contract) are usually at least 50% excrement, especially when you get bands like Poison covering Mott the Hoople or Bowie.  There are some exceptions, especially for bands that stay within the wheelhouse (The Covering by Stryper was like 90% good, The Immigrant Song was terrible), but in general they are usually fails.

Guilty Pleasures - covers of tunes by strong females artists, like Heart or Pink.  Songs like "Try" by Pink have been covered in a number of formats really, really well, as well as "Alone" by Heart.

Hate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY5kDqM135M
Nothing like taking a great song and shitting all over it!

Not really a guilty pleasure but not something I listen to regularly.

I was going to go with Lisa Cuthbert - Fragile Dreams (Anathema Cover), but found her take on This Corrosion (Sisters of Mercy) instead which is even better. Love her voice and melancholic style.

Her cover of 'Look at my Horse' (Weebl and Bob) is quite spectacular considering the original ;)

I have so much hate for a lot of modern remakes of songs by people who lack the vocal personality to pull them off. I think I've successfully purged them from my mind though as I can't think of a single one off the top of my head.

Guilty pleasure... Harry's cover of Imagination (Belouis Some) ... Hmmmmmm...

Love this album, still given a spin a few times a year. Bowie/Ronson covers of 60's garage. Skips and all...

Easily forget the bad but just can't shake Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm, shudder the thought of ever hearing it again, no desire to hear the original either.

Here's another 3
Love: Nine Inch Nails, Dead Souls (Originally by Joy Division). This is from one of my favorite movie sound tracks and I think **personally** It's better than the orginal.

Hate: Gym Class Heroes, Under The Bridge. Don't care for the original (RHCP) but these guys made it WAY worse.

Guilty Pleasure: New found Glory, Stay (I Missed You). I do love me some terrible pop punk!

Yeah, New Found Glory seem to love the oddball covers, didn't they cover Everything I Do I Do It For You by Bryan Adams?

Since a Neil Young cover was mentioned here's a pretty great cover of a Neil Young song. Low and Dirty Three doing 'Down By The River'

As far as hated covers go the list is long and I'd rather not think of them and I can't think of any guilty pleasure covers at the moment.

I absolutely Love Ryan Adams take Oasis's Wonderwall

Cannot Stand what Willie and Waylon did to one of my all time favorite songs, Panch and Lefty,by Townes VanZandt. Just awful...

Here is one of many Townes VanZand Versions for comparison:

My Guilty pleasure: would be Cake's rendition of Black Sabbath's war pigs.

I haven't gone back to the originals but i really enjoy Steve Earle's cover album "Townes".

And Cake as a guilty pleasure, has to be...

War Pigs is shakin', was missing the trumpet but we got it, didn't let me down.

I used to like the original, until it got thrashed to death after that bloody Cadbury ad.

My favourite part is the moody first section. The drums ruin it.

+1 for Life on Mars. Great, great soundtrack.

Here's a guy who did surprise me with his versions compared to the originals. I like them both. It's interesting that the meanings of songs sometimes become a little more apparent, or real, when the song is covered in another style.

...
I totally agree about the SRV cover of Little Wing. It helps that it's a great song to begin with. I really like Sting's version too. The transition from Bullock's guitar solo to Branford's sax solo is beautiful.

Not sure this counts as a cover, but it's close enough to the idea for me. The Jim Hall version of the Concierto De Aranjuez is one of my favorite things ever,

Not exactly a guilty pleasure kind of thing, more of a weird pleasure I guess, Rasputina's cover of Wish You Were Here,

So many youtube links here haha...
Here's some covers I like

Charles Bradley covering Neil Young. Dat high hat, those horns. This was made for CB

Built to Spill covering Neil Young

Charles Bradley covering Black Sabbath. I've never listened to Sabbath much but this is devastating

Amy Winehouse covering Zutons(?). My favorite of hers

Superchunk covering Destiny Child's Say My Name. Indie/punk covering 90s R&B

Hard to pick only three, but here goes:

I love this:

Not that I hate this one, more that I find it very funny (there's a sabbath theme forming in this thread):

And a guilty pleasure:

To admit to loving what's originally a disco anthem (we're not talking War Pigs just in case that wasn't clear)... so much for any hard earned cred... safe to go in the column under Guilty Pleasures.

Yes, Cake is awesome... disco anthems... one must be cautious.
Title: Re: Love, Hate, Guilty Pleasure...covers

Who cares if something was a disco anthem first? You don't have to quantify your taste by saying you feel guilty. Why should you feel guilty about liking a song? If you like a thing, then like it. It's just music, it's not like you're admitting you like to make babies cry or anything. Real cred comes from not caring what people think anyway.

(And that's why I don't believe in guilty pleasures.  8) )

I wouldn't say I'm embarrassed at all to like Cake or that song. I list it as a guilty pleasure more so because of how different it is from the original. I imagine the guys from Sabbath didn't have that vibe in mind when they wrote the song and would be a bit put off if I told them I liked it more than their version!

Dave, I was mostly just thinking out loud about the concept of "guilty pleasures", though in hindsight I can see that it looks like I was ranting at you. Apologies! I think you're rad and I hope we're cool.

also, David Kitt does a pretty amazing bunch of covers on his album, Red and Black song book:
(can't go wrong with a bit of Thin Lizzy anyway).

or the beatles (love the textural guitar freakout that builds over the last 2/3rds of the song)

His cover of toot's and the maytals "pressure drop" is pretty special too. I haven't actually listened to this in an age, which is why i got all excited and posted a bunch of vids :p
