Title: Recommend me a Tremolo build
Post by: Guybrush on July 17, 2014, 05:20:28 PM
Hey all

I built the MusicPCB Tap Tempo Tremolo some time ago and while it's a great pedal, mine suffers from a great deal of ticking in a lot of the settings.

Please could somebody recommend me another tremolo build that let's you select different wave types?

I can obviously Google this myself but I was hoping to get a bit of feedback on different circuits from the lovely people here who have built them.

Thanks guys!

Sounds like the Tremulous Lune/Shoot the Moon is what you're after.

Shoot the Moon is one of my new favorites, just popped one last night with great results.  EA Tremolo is pretty good too.  Tremulus Lune (and all the mods) is also a great one.  If you are rolling your own LDR with Tayda LDRs (or similar no-names)...a clear orange LED seems to give a great sweep in my experience.

Shoot the Moon. It's the bollocks.

If you want a choppier style Trem, shoot the moon is a really nice one.  If you want a warmer Trem that is closer to the old Fender style trems, then the EA Trem is what I would go for.  The EA also works really nicely as a boost of you short the LFO to ground.  Both are great in their own way.

Forgot one, Jon's Harmonic Trem is really very cool if you fancy something a little different.

Yep, forgot to mention that...the Cardinal is also pretty bad-ass..

Populated my Cardinal this weekend and gave it a try on the BoB... really cool unit, maybe not my thing since i'm more into the chopper style of trem, but for the classy fender stylish trem.. this is tha shizznit!

Otherwise, we offer the STM under it's last incarnation by it's creator CJ, under the name Electric Boogaloo.

PM me and I'll see if we can figure out a way to make the tremolo more square.

Cool! I'll spend more time with it first, maybe it will demonstrate me all of the sine wave goodness.

Wonderful suggestions as always!

Cheers guys, I'll have a look at all the suggestions.

Such a shame that the MusicPCB TTT ticks so much (well my build does at least). I spent forever designing the decal and putting it all together (twice) and just can't dial out the noise.

Edit: Are the TL and STM pedals similar?

GrindCustoms: Do you have a build doc/BOM for the Electric Boogaloo? The link on your site doesn't seem to work. Thanks!

I believe the Shoot the Moon is a modified/simplified Tremulus Lune.

Try accessing it from the link on his forum, that works for me

I built one with zero ticking. Did you try the special wiring of the footswitch to eliminate the ticking? It seems to have worked...

I'll 2nd the Cardinal if you want vintage/unique. I haven't finished mine but like the demos I've heard

+1 for the Shoot the Moon as an all round working man's trem. Nothing wrong with the EA trem but it can't do square and if I want a booster I kick in my dedicated booster, not a trem. Tremelus Lune is just too many knobs. Three is the max for a trem in my book. Unless its a Lovetone Trem, then it will come a with a gazillion knobs and switches. But that's okay, it's a Lovetone.

Just finished Griny's electric boogaloo today. It's a stutter trem with a volume trimmer you can turn into and external knob,

Double Flush is a good working trem, but Brian is out of the old version and has the new one in development limbo.

Wobulator is good if you want stereo trem.

More great replies! Thanks.

I ideally want a trem that does a range of waves. That's why I built the TTT but the ticking just makes it unusable. Maybe I'll have to build a couple of the ones you guys have suggested, one for square wave stuff and one for classic trem.

Or try and fix the TTT. I'm kind of at my whits end with it though.

Thanks again!

If you want a hugely flexible trem, then build a VCA and a LFO (like Rick Holt's Waverunner). It's Eurorack synth, so you'd need an interface (not hard), but it's fun!

That's why I suggested the Tremulus Lune. You can basically dial up any wave-shape you can think of...but it's too tweaky for some people. Which is why the Shoot the Moon was designed, I believe.

I have a Shoot the Moon based PCB as well if it suits your fancy. It is a three knob version with external rate, depth and shape controls and an external trim pot to set the desired gain.

I was gonna build a trem but then I found a Danelectro Cool Cat trem for $35. Definitely gonna re-house it because the enclosure is weird and hard to operate, but the tone is just fine.

That sounds like a really interesting tremolo Jon. Is it one of your new designs? Steve.

Yeah, I've been meaning to get them up for sale but I've been super busy with work and I'm also trying to get a PCB store up and running. I'm just about done with that and a few projects will be available once it is up and running.  In the meantime, hit me up with a PM if you are interested in grabbing one...
