Title: The bass sound in Hey Ya -- any ideas?
Post by: midwayfair on July 19, 2014, 03:06:58 PM
I was sure this was a bass guitar, but it also sounds like it's got some synth stuff going on. I can't get there with any of the envelope filters I've got here. It's really obvious at the breakdown:

Yeah, I've assumed it was a synth. Notice the bass guitar riff at 3:28.

But the synth sounds pretty close to a square wave with an envelope filter, which could be approximated with effects on a bass. I'll be the hardest part would be playing consistently enough that the envelope sweep sounds the same enough.

I think you're right. I do think you could come close with the iStomp "Dirty Robot" (http://digitech.com/en-US/products/dirty-robot) patch though. (I promise I'm not a digitech shill or anything. I just think iStomps are handy)

It's absolutely a synth. There's a regular bass guitar in there too, but the sound we're talking about is a synth. I can't quite tell if the envelope filter is an effect or if it was manually played (like on a Moog).
