Hey,
A friend's just sent me a little sample of a fuzz sound and was wondering what could possibly get him there be it DIY or commercial.
My initial thoughts are it could be an ugly face that could do it, but I think my judgement is coloured cos that'll be my next personal build.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Won't get that with an uglyface. Might get something similar (though much more aggressive) from the BeeBaa. It's the super lo-fi buzziness that's tough to get, might need to look into bit crushers to get that.

But then with Crushers... you somehow end up sounding out of tunning if you play out of the range of sample rate dialed in... not that they are'nt fun tho...
That clip sounds a lot like the Queens of the stone age, you should check out what gear Josh Homme uses for fuzz tones. If you listen close right at the end there is a lot of amp hiss in the recording. This could be nothing more than a crummy little gorilla GG-25 amp cranked up to it's maximum overdrive, max midrange, and close-mic'd.

however, the playing has little feel or dynamics :(

I have no idea what the fuzz is. I couldn't even say if it's a guitar or not. I agree that it sounds like there is something beyond a fuzz though. It sounds something like soft-sync with a square wave. Or, maybe a resonant low-pass that is being swept to the note frequency. The hiss at the end sounds like it is processed or filtered white noise. It could be an amp and fuzz overdriven hard with some processing or a filter somewhere, or the whole thing could be a digital filter with monstrous levels of square wave distortion and a fast swept resonant filter.
Whatever it is, the character of the hiss at the end is a hint at what it is and what to do to get close to the sound.

I managed to dig some info out of him, turns out it's a guitar DI'd into Logic and then the Candy Fuzz & OctaFuzz from the Pedal board applied before going into the Amp Simulator.
Looked up what the Candy Fuzz is modeled after and it could maaaaaybe be a BJFE Candy Apple Fuzz or a Analogman Peppermint Fuzz.
