Title: First Baby Board Attempt jack questions
Post by: claytushaywood on December 16, 2014, 09:15:31 PM
I ordered 4 madbean baby boards in order to attempt my first 1590a builds.

Regarding the jacks- could I use my neutrik open metal frame jacks on some of my smaller baords- I ordered the runt, egghead, bacon bits and afterlife... i realize the runt is probably going to need the low profile jacks so that the board will fit over jacks inside the enclosure.

But maybe the bacon bits or the egghead- could I use the neutrik open metal jacks?
I do have low profile lytics, tants, dc jacks, dipped ceramics and panasonic EC series. So i will be low profile everywhere else... I also have a low profile 3pdt from BLMS- so I could use that if yall think its needed with my regular sized jacks

You might be able to, but measure three times before drilling. You most likely won't really be able to use the drilling template more than as a general guide. You wouldn't want to end up in a situation where the jacks were too close or were shorting against the bottom.

I like those low-profile 3PDTs, and they might save you a very tiny bit of room. Just be prepared for some frustration from the really tiny eyelet holes.

Actually, Chromosphere might have a drill template for open frame jacks. He sells a couple boards that are made to go in 1590As without resorting to low-profile jacks.

Jimmybjj has actually done in-line jacks in a 1590A before, but I don't know how.

I use the madbean 1590a template and fudge it for open frame jacks.  Cant tell you if those boards of madbeans will fit with open frame jacks though.

Thanks guys!  I've been thinking about how i'd like to measure my drill locations instead of using templates, because I'm never able to get very accurate drills with them.  Do you have any suggestions for measurement techniques?

Using a drill punch helps a lot with getting more accurate drill holes. I use a 1.5mm drill punch then start with a 1.5mm drill bit and work my way up to 2.5, 3.5 etc.
However the baby boards scare me and I prefer bigger enclosures so I put them into 1590b's.
Also check that your drill template lines up with the pcb size. I just built a Bloviator and drilled from the template before the pcb arrived and the pots didn't line up too well.
