Title: Pug dogs
Post by: alanp on February 21, 2015, 02:20:39 AM
I think I must be the only person who doesn't like pugs -- their squat bodies look like someone's spent some time with a woodwork vice, and the eyes pretty much always look like they'd pop out if you patted it on the back of the head, or if it nodded. Plus how the tongue often doesn't fit in the mouth.

I'll admit the documentary on purebred dog problems (and the 3 year followup doco) colours my views on them.

They look more mutant to me. Like "dwarf breed" cats.

I always assumed people loved them based on how preposterous they are.

I've had three.  They are ridiculous.  If you're watching a movie, sometimes you have to wake them up because they are snoring too loud.  when they get frustrated, like the pug in madbean's picture with the cookie, they blow snot, and spin in circles

I'm a Labrador Retriever guy, but Pugs are pretty hilarious.  Just saying.

Had them when I was a kid.  We named the first one Yoda.  The second one was black, wanted to name it Vader, but mom wasn't having it.

Yes they are ridiculous. But they are awesome too. Ours:

Had a pug for many years. It's about the joy of how ridiculous they are. Truly a lot of dog in a little package.

I never really saw the appeal of pugs either, especially since we've basically ruined them in the name of breeding.

Corgis, though. Give me a corgi any day of the week.

Seriously, someone please give me a corgi. I promise I'll feed it and walk it every day!

Pugs are awesome. Pure lovedog. We have two. One is normal and very pug-ish. The other is deaf, missing one eye, has a partially crumpled body and her bark only comes out sounding like "MARK-LARK". I am seriously in love with both of them.

Here's my pug.  She's totally deaf.  She's getting old.

I'm with ya bud. I'm not a huge fan either. My wife said to me one day "let's get a dog!" to which I said ok. I then brought home a 90lb German Shepherd. She then said "I meant like a pug or something"...I laughed.

Golden Retrievers baby! Mine is the love of my life. Got a serious bromance going with him.

I would like a french bulldog :D
Pugs are incredibly ugly to me, and there's actually a thin line, aesthetically, between them and the f bulldog that's appealing to me.
All in all, all dogs are great as long there isn't a bunch of saliva hanging from their mouth. That's a line that I just will not cross.
Therefore I'm a cat person ✔

Like I said, had a pug for years and she was a fantastic dog. Now we have a chocolate lab and she is just as goofy but in a much bigger package. Dogs. Rule. Period.

The cats are wiling to let you think that, as long as you continue to serve them as befits their station ;)

Always had cats in my family, and we've NEVER, EVER had rodent problems.

Apart from when we get a kitten, and the older female cats bring in a live mouse for the young'un to learn on.

We have a French Bulldog, too. She's a lot of fun...very good companion. Except, just two weeks ago she decided to eat a helping of blanket which landed her in emergency surgery.

Leaning towards getting a Golden Lab and a Sheperd, though if I could find one, I'd certainly be up for a Visla, or possibly a Weimarainer (both probably spelled wrong, but one's an Austrian hunting dog, and the other is its German cousin).

If I had a pug, he'd be named Benedict.  Look up "If dogs could text" for that reference.

Granted, no grass for a year and new hardwood floors probably means zero dogs for the immediate future.

For the record

My next one will likely be another lab. I have been flipping over these "Fox Red" lab retrievers. Same great lab but in a new exciting color  :)

Dalmation / Pit Bull.
One of the best dogs I've ever had the pleasure to know and love...

Ended up looking after a pug puppy for a day as the labrador at their house saw it as some sort of tiny active snack... Spent the day trying to eat my toenails. Odd little thing, certainly explained the expression on it's little face ;)

Spaniel man myself. Big eyes and long floppy ears are where it's at.

Choc lab man here. Dumbest, clumsiest and overall best companion ever.

Nothing wrong with Pugs. All dogs are cool and I'm a cat guy. I dig all animals. I like them better than people  8)

Pugs are awesome. My former stepdad's dad had one that he named Dammit. So whenever he called it, he'd be like "C'mere, Dammit!"

Anybody know what breed Stella on Modern Family is? French Bulldog?

Let's not forget how hideous pugs are "under the hood" thanks to generations upon generations of inbreeding. (http://i.imgur.com/JBGzHMp.jpg)
It's the same reason French Bulldogs can't really swim; we bred it out of them. Put them in a pool, and they'll sink like a rock.
Pugs definitely fall into the category of "ugly enough to come back around and be cute" for me.

I have a dachshund, so I understand a few things about goofy looking breeds.

Yeah - apparently french bulldogs were created by breeding English bull dogs with pugs. IMO frenchies got the best of both breeds, and are on average a healthier breed than either (they are not without their health issues, but based on the many I've known it's no where near what most English bull dogs and pugs almost inevitably suffer). Frenchies are also, on average, less aggressive than either, and have a near perfect personality (for me!).

I even had a three legged pug - pug #2 body checked pug #1 into the wall at full speed, and that was the end of that.  We had a ramp to the couch after that.
