Title: MXR Distortion+ ?
Post by: Rich_S on June 16, 2011, 02:33:55 AM
Are any of the MadBean projects similar to a good old-school Distortion+?  Lately, I've been working on learning all the songs on one of my favorite obscure '80s albums, Martha and the Muffins' Danseparc. Their guitar player's dirty tone was classic Distortion+ through a big clean amp: Fender Twin or Roland JC120. Distortion+ through the Jazz Chorus is a great sound.  Also, I recently read a great review of Whirlwind's modern take on the Distortion+.  It got me interested.  My first good pedal was a D+, back in 1977-ish.  Wish I still had it, or at least remember what it was like.

The D+ is a simple circuit, easily implemented on perfboard, but I prefer PC board.  So, are any of the MadBean clones of booteek pedals, really a clone of a clone of a Distortion+?

If not, any chance we'll see one in the future?

If Brian does not implement anything, I have built a few on General Guitar Gadgets boards. They are great as well. Lots of room for modding.

there is a full kit available at byoc, as well it also builds the dod250 and I would imagine the ross distortion as well. since they are almost identicle.

I'm posting this here as it is not verified. There are no errors found in Eagle so i am confident that it is correct. Whenever i get some time I build and verify it unless someone gets to it before i do. At that point i will post it in the "members project" section. This will fit into a 1590a with side by side 16mm pots.

I haven't built one of these yet but they seem like a nice mild overdrive sound. Something to put in front of a high distorted tube amp to just push it that much further.

Hmmmm, now I am am thinking I might buy one of those PCBs.

There's  a parts layout, partial parts list and schematic out there.

List http://diystompboxes.com/pedals/dist2com.html (http://diystompboxes.com/pedals/dist2com.html)
Schematic  http://diystompboxes.com/pedals/dist2.GIF (http://diystompboxes.com/pedals/dist2.GIF)

problem will be the unnamed diodes, which will require some testing. Anyone got some diode suggestions to start with?

I had a buddy in college who played a D+ through a SF Bassman and it was anything but mild! Serious hard rock pedal there.

the distortion+ is an Ironic name....t is indeed on the mild end of the spectrum. I wouldn't put it in the "distortion" category at all. Mild is a very good term for it.
