Title: Synare 3 (80's Analog Drum) ***Now with Demo!!!
Post by: peAk on April 03, 2015, 08:26:21 PM
Hi guys,

Been a while since I have posted anything. I have been working on a few but finally finished this up. You may have seen the vintage ones before cause they have a unique, round, ufo look to them. Mine, obviously, looks completely different.

This thing is really beefy and can get all kinds of synthetic, analog drum sounds. They were used by Gary Numan, Joy Division, The Cure, Devo, etc. It's two oscillators that can be detuned, harmonized, or whatever. You can also switch one of the oscillators to white noise as well as the other oscillator to act as an LFO. I bought the PCB from helensson and added some basic mods (DC Power, LED, External Trigger Input) but it's pretty true to the original. He's actually working on a new pcb design that will implement midi. I will be jumping all over that when he's done.

I am really happy with the way this one came out. This was my first attempt doing the vintage style side panels. I am not a wood work guy so I am pleased that they came out this well. This thing is triggered by a piezo sensor under the pad.

Sorry, no gut shots. Wouldn't matter anyway cause all the components are facing up. I will try, however, to post a demo of this thing.

Here is a short kinda dark, experimental demo created with the Synare. All sounds except synth pad, strings, and vocal sample are created using (many) Synare. Yes, those synth bass stabs are create with the Synare too  8)

Wow! Seriously impressive sir. You have to put a synth demo together... :)

Dig the wooden panels and knob selection.

(I just watched  helensson's demos and this is an awesome piece of gear!)

Cool. So it's a really posh porch board, then? ;)

I think I need to work up some drum PCBs.

This is insanely well done peAk.  The job you did on the wood panels is truly professional. I think I want one now.

Steve.

Lovely sounds. I made the mistake of showing this to my son and now he wants another father/son project. :)

Peak! That sounds like a missing tune from Operation Mindcrime!  I loved it. Ok, we all have to build one now!

Thanks guys

Like I mentioned in the OP, Helensson said he was working on a new version that will implement midi into the build.

Meanwhile, if someone is interested (Alan.....cough cough), here is a schematic on it: http://clacktronics.co.uk/research/drumlab/star-synare-3/

If I could change/add one other modification to this thing it would be to add some sort of attack control.

My fantasy is to build a device with 3 or 4 of these in there similar to the original. With midi implemented, you could have yourself a complete analog drum machine.  8)

I've been looking at that schematic since your original post.  What are those switches with 8 lugs?  Are they 4P3T?
Title: Re: Synare 3 (80's Analog Drum) ***Now with Demo!!!
Post by: alanp on April 07, 2015, 03:44:40 AM
Two pole sliding switches -- as you move the switch along, the two lugs that the switch is sitting on are connected. You could easily swap 'em for a 1P3T switch of some sort (the sliding ones don't look to have an actual Common lug.)

I think the Osc 2 switch is bung in that schematic... I'd have to sit down and nut it out.

Strongly tempted.

obviously you can tell from my build that I didn't go with slider switches. They are just too cheap and flimsy and trying to cut out slots for them would have been a PITA. I ordered some though just to make sure I got the switching right.

The schematic called for (5) 3080s which can get a little expensive @ $5 a pop from Smallbear. Luckily since then, I have found some on Ebay for a little over $1.50 a piece.

The piezo sensors are super cheap too.

Justin, what did you use for toggles?  Are they just DPDT center off?

I'll double check this evening when I get home cause I need to open it up anyway. I did the switches a while back and I believe I used these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-of-4-ON-OFF-ON-4PDT-Miniature-Toggle-Switch-Four-Pole-Double-Throw-/111636683720?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19fe109bc8

Definitely on/off/on toggles but I will confirm exactly which ones I used this evening. I used whatever I had onhand that would allow the switching that I needed.

That demo is awesome! I'm listening to a lot of synth music lately and that track is beautiful.

Thanks man. Hopefully my next demo will contain more synths. I play a lot more synths lately than I do guitar.

Bob, I just opened it up and confirmed those were the switches I used from above. If you, Alan, or someone makes a pcb, I have some of those cheap 8 pin sliders that I can mail them for free for testing. I just didn't want those switches on my finished one.

Thanks for checking - and the offer.  I bookmarked the eBay item & will order.  I just retired and I'm collecting projects.  Unfortunately, the first project I started was a complete revamp of my hobby space which is now torn apart and unusable.  I'll have time to wait for the switches to arrive before I get everything back together.    :(
