Title: Kemper profiling amp
Post by: Leevibe on February 09, 2016, 04:55:18 PM
A good friend of mine just dropped 4k on a Kemper profiling amp and peripherals. HOLY SMOKES! I don't like to admit it, but this thing is legit. Playing his SG into a Marshall plexi model was intoxicating. I've really never seen or heard anything like it. It has the ability to let you profile your own gear too. It's something like the way a convolution reverb works. You mic up your cab and run this thing into your amp. It plays a bunch of crazy tones and next thing you know, you have a virtual version of your rig, the quality of which depends upon how well you mic'd up etc.

4k?!?!?

I have a rack mounted.  They are fantastic.  Longest standing modeling device I've owned.  It's all about the quality profiles though...Mbrits are great IMO

I thought that's what he said. He got the 600w power head version + the kemper floor board and a pretty decent monitor.

Wait wait wait wait.

So you plug it into your amp, hook a mic that goes in to the unit as well, it goes 'beep boop', then your amp is modeled?

What?!

That's amazing. So then you plug in to this unit, plug it into a power amp and cab? Or just cab? Headphone?

Yeah, something like that. I'm sure Josh can answer better than I. I think you can turn the cab sim off and run it through a guitar cab, or you can hook it straight into a PA. This one has the power amp built in, but you can get an unamplified version.

Same concept as IR (Impulse Response) recording

Its fun to make them of spaces and add them to the mix. I once made one of the garage at my parents house and added it to all my tape mixes thinking I can keep that "garage" sound I had as a kid. lol It was fun but not really functional to say the least. It has come a LONG way since then but the concept is the same.

This isn't the Kemper (although he uses one sometimes) but here's a demo of doing impulse response on a cab:
