Title: Muff Clipping Diodes
Post by: Mattallica on April 09, 2016, 04:02:20 PM
Can anyone tell me which pair of clipping diodes (D1+D2 or D3+D4) I could swap out for leds in this muff circuit? I'd like to run a pair of wires from the main vero board to a dpdt footswitch, putting the regular diodes on one end of the switch, and a pair of leds on the other end. Thanks!

In my experience, the second pair (D3,D4) have a more pronounced effect when switching diodes in a Muff. You can make life easier by installing the LEDs for D3/4 and switching the 1n914s in parallel with the LEDs rather than fully switching between LEDs and 1n914. Clipping will occur through the diodes with the lowest forward voltage so when the 1n914 are in parallel with the LEDs, the LEDs are effectively ignored.

The Pharaoh pedal, Big Muff based, swap out the second stage diode, indeed.

Why do you want LEDs? Pharaoh, for example, swap the silicon diodes with germanium diodes.

Thank you mr Bean! I will give this a shot.

Jack, I want to try yellow LEDs to see how they sound, and they will also serve as light-up "eyes" that go along with the pedal art when engaged.
