Can this project go in an ordinary 1590BB or does it have to go in the tall version as the template suggests in the build doc?

You would need at least a 125BB or the recommended 1590BB Tall. It won't fit in a regular 1590BB.

Just to be clear - the PCB itself sill fit but jacks won't. Hence the larger enclosure.
