Title: New Vintage Gibson Day!
Post by: raulduke on January 09, 2017, 05:33:55 PM
This is my first proper vintage guitar, and was also an impulse online buy, so I'm pretty stoked that now it's arrived its in one piece... and is a right beauty ;D

It's a 1963 Gibson ES120T (the lowliest of Gibson's semi-acoustic range in the 60's  ;D).

The price was more than reasonable (looking at how much they go for on average). I can't afford a vintage ES335, but I can afford this. My own little piece of Guitar/Gibson history.

I also have a thing for utilitarian simple guitars, and this one fits the bill perfectly (no bling, just the stuff you need).

Sellers pic's:

It plays like a dream and just feels beautiful. I think the sellers must have done a proper job on the setup (quite rare in my experience). It's got that great patina that old guitars have. No relicing just wear and tear through the years.

My wife even commented that it is beautiful to look at and hold. It's her favourite out of the lot at the moment.

Soundwise the Melody Maker pickup is very low output. Like a warm, low output strat pickup. It sounds great with a bit of trem and reverb.

Curtis Novak does a P90 Melody Maker replacement, so I might look into that at some point.

That's pretty rad man. I like old Gibsons, especially the 335s. My dream guitar is a '64 335 in Cherry Red. A matching '64 strat and I'd never need another guitar... well, that's obviously not true, but still.

My friend pawned a guitar just like that once, and lost it. Nice guitar.

Awesome!  I love the old hollow and semi hollows.  There's something about their growl that's really appealing.

I saw a late 50's 100s model Gibson thinline hollow body (single cutout, P90s, but can't remember the full #) while I was home over Christmas a couple of years back for an absolute steal on CL.  I called the owner the day after the holiday...gone.

That's a beauty!  I love vintage instruments.  It's a bonus that your wife likes it - that goes a long way in my house.

We need a vintage instrument thread here.  I love old instruments.  I am addicted to the musty smell of them.

That's a beautiful guitar and since it's pre-64 it should have a proper neck on it.

Definitely a awesome score!!

+1 in Novak pickups. That guy really knows his stuff.

Thanks guys. I'm chuffed to bits with it.

Vintage thread would be cool. I love old stuff in general.

It's hard to get vintage Gibson/fender at good (even realistic) prices in the U.K. Usually, so I jumped at the chance with this one.

The neck is surprisingly comfy. It's not modern c standards thin, but it's not as chunky as I was expecting.

Good idea!

I'll fit it at the same time as the Floyd Rose I've bought for it.

Ha cheers dude. Still loving it  :)

The other vintage thing I picked up recently was a Daneletro 1448 (with the amp/case).

There's definitely something about old guitars.

The Dano is perfect for playing slide. I'll try and post some pics soon.

Man, I own quite a few guitar but nothing too old. An 80s Jap Strat being the oldest.

I would really love to own something vintage like this. Just absolutely beautiful.
