Title: Cascadia multi-fx unit
Post by: Stomptown on February 05, 2017, 05:13:43 AM
I finally got this one boxed up and threw it on the pedaltrain nano+ I got for Christmas this year!  This one has been in the works for quite some time.  The effects are op amp buffer (always on) > MXR Micro Amp > Long Block Overdrive (designed by Leevibe) > 2010 aquaboy.  I added a daughter board to the Long Block OD so I could implement the add on's that are available on Lee's  Big Block OD.  There are 6 clipping options, a warm/mid/fat switch and a smooth bite switch. So far I am digging the mosfet clippers with mid and smooth caps in the circuit but I need to put more time into it deciding on what to stick with. I had some issues with noise from the compander so I switched out C7 (C10 equivalent on the 2016 aquaboy) for a 470n as suggested by Brian in this thread:  http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=24783.0
It worked like a charm. Thanks Brian! I also decided to run the Aquaboy at 15v via Road Rage so I had to up the value of R31 (R30 equivalent) to get the self oscillation calibrated.  Now it sounds great and I have to say, the Xvive chips sound REALLY nice IMO.  Arguably quieter/better sounding that the vintage MN3005s I've used, but maybe my ears are playing tricks on me.

That's slick! I bet that setup gets a lot of attention. Etch, knobs, layout...this has it all.

It's so clean I had to take a shower because I felt dirty looking at it.  Really nice work!

this is clean beyond words. what puts it at the top really, is the fact that isn't ribbon wire.
what kind of wire is it btw? solid core/stranded? gauge?

I don't remember what brand it is but is 26 gauge solid core.  It's super easy to work with as long and you don't bend it back and forth too much.

The etch is amazing (+1 to Jimi's post), but I'm more impressed with how neat the guts are!   My last multi was a rat's nest.

The knobs were embarrassingly expensive (hand made) but it was one of those situations where I couldn't stop thinking about it after finding them.  Here are the links to the manufacturer and the best priced distributor I found (they have free intl shipping on orders over $50 right now).

http://www.kilointernational.com/knobs/

https://www.arrow.com/en/products/search?q=kilo&filters=Manufacturer_name:Kilo%20International;

The easiest way to find the knobs on arrow's website is to enter the actual product codes from the Kilo website based on series, size, indicator, finish, etc.

That looks amazing! I'm going to try ribbon cable for the off board connections on the build I have on the go right now.

Great work.

Etch... terrible.
Wiring... hideous.
Knobs... ugly.
I hate seeing such rushed and unplanned work.
;D
Seriously, amazing job!

Thanks dude; quality costs so not surprised.

They look awesome on your pedal so were worth it imo.

I could be mad at you for that etch....or for the guts I couldn't stop staring at.....but I'll skip that and be mad at you for providing a link for those knobs.  >:( ;D

Nice, work and I love the idea of those multi's on that board.

This is as amazing as ever, Jon. I love it not just for the etch and ridiculously good wiring, but I think this is a really smart grouping of effects. I want to do something similar but with trem, OD, delay. I know you like to wear Chucks. Is that graphic just a pic of your own shoes? If so, that makes it even cooler! I'm intrigued by the DIP switch board for the diode/cap switching. I may borrow that idea.

Inspiring work. Is that Envirotex over the etch? The knobs are classy.

Yeah, I find the envirotex help bring the contrast out a bit. I you look at the other pedal in the pedal board I posted you can see the difference it makes. I'm still debating on whether or not to gut that one and envirotex the enclosure.  I'm leaning towards not doing it right now but we'll see.

Thanks Lee.  The effec t choices in the multis are essentially based on everything I would typically use in a cover band situation.  I went with two delays so I can have one set for slap back and one for soloing. I may eventually build another multi to replace the Orion since I don't need the reverb with my current amp setup.  Then I could add chorus in it's place.

Keri actually found the graphics online so no extra credit there.  I think it would be cool if you incorporated something similar in the lb.  if you want the eagle files or want me to modify it based on your typical switch wiring preference let me know and I'd be happy to hook it up.

It was actually a PIF and unfortunately they're not commercially available. It's the pcb from Leevibes Long Block Overdrive which is one of his commercial products.
