Title: A riddle: Can you guess the song that inspired me to build this
Post by: Marshall Arts on March 21, 2017, 06:10:45 PM
This build is not completed yet, but I thought I make a little riddle from the build process:

Here are the questions:

1) What will be hidden in the graphic under the tone knob?
2) Which circuit will get in there?
3) Which specific version of that circuit (neglecting the mod switches)?
4) Which song inspired me to finally build this one? Hint: Klaus arrived at 9 p.m.
5) Extra points: There seems to be something wrong in the left corner, but I swear it is correct. Can you guess why it is correct?
6) Very special kudos: What does the LED represent?

Google and dailymotion are your friends.

Fuzz Face ... Tone Bender
Klaus ... Voorman? Beatles ... Penny Lane ... Abbey Road ....

Klaus ... Nomi?

I don't know.

I don't know.

No Fuzz Face. No Tone Bender. Not Klaus Voormann. Not Beatles related. Not Klaus Nomi. It's all in there ;-)

I would guess a David Bowie or Lou Reed song for the inspiration, but then I don't know the relevance of the hint.  The date and coordinates tell me what the location/importance/event is, but I haven't ever been there which makes it hard to give real answers. For question 5, I would guess the area has been substantially changed in the last ~25 years. Perhaps someone else will be able to come up with more specific answers.

Well, that could be and tells me, that you found the location. But it isn't David Bowie or Lou Reed. The location only works with what happened there around that date.

It is not necessary to have been there for the purpose of this... otherwise, I would recommend to not leave this earth before having been there.

Well, I should have been more precise here: The date is not 100% correct for what google will tell you. But for me, it is ;-)

So is the Tone knob the Brandenburg Gate?

Yes.

So the LED would be Potsdamer Platz or the Holocaust Memorial.

(I live in that city).

Given the Date I would assume its something to do with Roger Waters "The Wall" Concert. As for the particular song... not sure. I'm guessing Klaus refers to the lead of The Scorpions, but I've no idea what any of them were doing the night before the concert. I shall keep digging!

Oh yeah, Klaus Meine. Wind of change.

Everything correct. Klaus. Waters. The Night before the Show. If you know that Klaus showed up at 9, dailimotion will Tell you the Song.

Oh. And the LED is Not the holocaust Memorial. Today it is, but not back than.

It was no-mans-land back then.

In this case "Back then" would refer to July 1990, and I am guessing the LED was the location of the concert stage itself.

So I'm guessing the circuit is something Gilmour-related, Lunar Module, Big Muff of sorts etc.

I've not seen a BMP with "gain" used as a knob label (as accurate as it may be) which threw me off (though the bender switch to take the diodes out of the equation should have been a clue).

So if we're talking BMP and The Wall, this would likely be the Ram's Head flavor of the circuit.

Wow, you even recognized the "bender" mod. "Sustain" was too long for the graphics... and in terms of outer appearance, I did not care about accuracy.

Correct.

So, I solve the rest:
The location is the "Potsdamer Platz", where the Berlin wall used to be (parts of it was even used as the fence for the concert!). So, on the upper edge, there will be the "Brandenburg Gate". Here is a ticket for public transportation from that time:

and here is an image of that map today (the gray area, where the stage used to be is the holocaust memorial):

The concert was on 21st of July 1990, but through lucky accidents, I ended up within the fence for the rehearsal on 20th of July and saw the complete show the day before the official concert. So, if the stage is the large rectangle in the middle of the graphic, the LED would be ME.

You can see the concert from 21st of July here:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2b70ga_roger-waters-the-wall-live-in-berlin-1990_music (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2b70ga_roger-waters-the-wall-live-in-berlin-1990_music)

Fun fact: Parts of that video are from the 20th of July, as they had a long power outage on the 21st. They cut these parts out for the video production.

If Klaus Meine enters the stage around 9 p.m. "Comfortably Numb" was around 10:11 p.m. (22:11). And even though Gilmour wasn't there, I still remember the impressive sound of the guitar solos (Rick Di Fonzo & Snowy White), so when I built this effect (JMK Scuba Drive), I thought that this would be a nice reference.

So yes, the circuit is a big muff, and of course a Ram's Head version.

Very cool, and a great story to build a pedal around

(And I've used the Kit Rae page to get 3 friends into pedal building/electrical engineering and have spent way too long browsing it for it to be considered healthy. Only reason I recognize what Bender might mean on a BMP circuit  ;D  )

This is what the "Berlin 90 Muff" looks like assembled.

The amount of thought and effort that went into this is very, very impressive.

Cool pedal, and a good story to go with it.

But I just have to say, thanks a bunch, I've now had 'Winds of Change' in my head all day. :)

It is a Rose&Krieger Blocan Cable Channel. Google that  :) :)

And finally: The gut shot. On high gain pedals or pedals that induce audible clock signals, I use shielded wire from and to the jacks, this time a RG 178, which has only 1,8 mm diameter. It's much more work to strip/insulate/ground everything but it looks neat and is dead quiet.
