I've decided I'd like to start a blog or website where I can post about pedals, guitar mods, music theory etc but am not sure where to start and am confused by the amount of options out there.
Anyone else on here have a blog or website and would like to share their experiences or advice?
Wordpress is a perfect format for that. It only takes a few minutes to install and get running. Lots of tutorials on youTube on setting up a Wordpress site.

Used it for years.

Thanks chaps I've just signed up for wordpress now off to check out tutorials on how to set it up.
Looking forward to what you have to offer!
As am I.
I'm also curious about jimilee's blog too.
Another vote here for Wordpress.
My suggestion is to choose a theme that has "sample data" you can import so that all the whizz-bang features are flushed out and working. I used to get so mad because I'd see this great theme and then install it and...it looked like shit. I finally figured out that most of them need content (5 posts, some pages, some photos, categories, tags, etc) to actually take shape and function.
Here's my wordpress site: www.tightcamera.com
Here's one I did for work: www.gwttllc.com
And FFX is also wordpress: www.fuction-fx.com
Of course, none of those are set up as blogs. But Wordpress can do a lot of things.
Another vote for WordPress here.
You can either get it hosted on Wordpress, or if you have your own domain and hosting with something like cPanel, it will install Wordpress for you on your own domain.
But starting out with the free hosting on Wordpress is a good way to start, so you can see if it is for you.
Lots of great advice I'll have a play with Wordpress tonight and see how I get on. When I get something worth reading I'll update this with a link ;D
As former g00gl3 sp4mm3r, i prefer WP self host
Nothing wrong, with WP dotcom. But you have limited choice to customized your site.
You just buy domain and mapping(i forget how much). Then you just created content
Think this is like buy pedal from big guy, like boss, ibanez. :D
Why self host? Our world! DIY! You're pedal builder, you can build anything.
To do list :
- Domain : recomended buy in namesilo. This is tayda for domain :D
- Hosting : Crocweb or hawkhost. Shared host, of course. Install with speed of light. No worries for setup, etc. Wgy not VPS? I believe, for starter, you dont have a massive traffic like a forum.
- Theme : ALWAYS use FAST and RESPONSIVE theme, it doesn't matter free/premium theme.
example : my favorite builder site : Cody http://music.codydeschenes.com/ (http://music.codydeschenes.com/)
Choice 2
if you tight budget and just want your own domain, but dont want spent to buy hosting, use blogger
Just buy domain and mapping to blogger (its free). Still have choice to theme.
example : my favorite writer : Benoit http://www.coda-effects.com/ (http://www.coda-effects.com/)
Choice 3
If you just want write your story
just use blogger or tumblr.
example: what? really?
look at vero gang http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.com (http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.com)
David the perfman http://effectslayouts.blogspot.com (http://effectslayouts.blogspot.com)
http://diy-guitar-effects.tumblr.com (http://diy-guitar-effects.tumblr.com), sorry i forget who behind this. Maybe you guys recognize.
If you want to test things out without having to do any hosting, you can use something like AMPPS: https://www.ampps.com/
It's got everything you need to run a modern web site locally on your machine: web server, database server, PHP, Perl, Python, FTP server, etc. And it's free!
I used it earlier this year to fully build out a web site before pushing it live. Once you are done with the build-out, you can do a full Wordpress backup and then restore the backup to the live server. It was so easy.
woah, thanks CJ.
never know ampps, long time xampp user ;D
i think i must stop here, dont want to dig site development again :'(
wow awesome info just keeps on coming
This a a good thread with some useful info.
