I just got a "gaming" laptop with decent specs. Nothing cutting-edge, but good enough to play quite a few mostly modern titles. I haven't seriously looked at any games in several years, and it's an overwhelming landscape (which is a good thing). I've got a Steam account setup now, so I'm good to go in that respect.
I do not want a "totally immersive life-consuming experience", haha. I want something I can play somewhat casually. I like stuff with guns, explosions, and gratuitous violence. I also dig post-apocalyptic stuff, but it's not required.
I'm fine with stuff that's a couple years old. Don't need teh newest-greatest, as I'm still occasionally playing Unreal Tournament (the original), haha.
Here's what I have found that looks good for my general interests: https://store.steampowered.com/app/286690/Metro_2033_Redux/
Taking all suggestions. Thanks!
Getting Over It on Steam. I bet it'd take you hours to play it
Well, Fortnite seems to be the current day equiv of UT? I watch as my kid gets excited about 'new' game features, and shake my head as I can see they've just dusted off yet another feature from UT2004. But then again, if I was Epic, I'd be doing the same.
I suspect that if you try Fortnite you'll be playing against a bunch of 12 year olds though.
Just Cause 3.
It is ridiculously fun (and occasionally it remembers to have a plot!).
Errp, I wish I could recommend you something light with guns, but all the casual type stuff I play on consoles. Everything I play on the PC tends to be RPG or strategy, which is about as far as you can get away from that.
The new Doom game might have come out for it though, that's great fun... The latest Wolfenstein is also. Otherwise, no idea.
The first three quarters of Mad Max is fun.
Painkiller is rather old, but hell of a lot of fun.
I haven't played anything more modern then Warhammer Dawn of War 2. These days, if I play any game that is, I mostly play old stuff. gog.com has always been good for me in that regard. It was nice to be able to play Wingcommander III and IV again on my current Win10 laptop.
Fallout (any)
Wasteland 2
Borderlands
Max Mad
Thanks guys. I'll check these out.
Dark Mod! It's free and in the style of the old Thief games by Ion Storm. Super fun.
I have some old games I can send you, too. Does your lappy have a disc drive?

No, but I got an external drive.
So I pulled the trigger (har-har) on Sniper Elite 3. I would've gone for 4, but I'm not sure I want to drop $60. I'm sure i'll get there, but $30 was a better price point.
Pretty cool game. Love the nearly pornographic violence of the slow-mo / x-ray kill shot cinematics. 8)
I've got the AI / difficultly as low as it will go. I face enough challenges in real life; I just want to kill Nazis with minimum interference. ;D
Oh... Video Games.
I was gonna give my favourite board game suggestions...
Jacob
If you like SE3, you'll dig SE4.
latest Hitman game.
As an addendum to my earlier recommendation for Just Cause 3, At the moment the game plus all 3 expansion packs is less than 7$ on steam. $4.50 for just the base game itself.
85% off is a pretty decent deal....

Wow, I forgot how old this game was. I strongly suggest skipping the extra crap, not as good as the original game.

Yeah, I went ahead and got it. ;D The wanton destruction is exactly what I'm jonesing for lately. Thanks!
Some of my fav. fast paced, easy to pick up PC games are:
Doom (2016)
Left for Dead series
Been playing Earth Fall which is a lot like the left for dead series
Dead space series
If you like side-scrolling challenging games, give Dead Cells a look. I have been playing it for a few days now and loving it. It just came out of early access and was released last week.
Most of these games can be had pretty cheap on Steam. You just missed the huge Steam Summer Sale but the Winter sale is just as good.
