Title: Magnifico / JHS Haunting Mids boost
Post by: cooder on August 15, 2018, 07:35:58 AM
JHS Haunting Mids take / version on a pedalpcb board.
This is a bit of a weird cookie I feel, it has a few sweet spots but as a tuneable boost it is not as fully thought through as the Catalinbread Varioboost (the Mercury I recently built).

Anyway, as always curiosity killed the cat and I had to build it of course anyway, and yes it can do some good stuff too, so it's not all wasted or so.
Gotta build 'em all to find out and so on...
I did mount the resonance control which is normally an internal trim pot on dash and I'm glad I did to get some more out of it. Overall not quite as "Magnifico' as my naming was hoping for.

Even if the circuit sounds a bit "meh," it looks great!

I kinda like the jhs vlogs on youtube but then again i do love me some pedal porn ^^. Don t know much about his pedals... all i have ever seen of them are basic boost and overdrives . Its a shame you boxed something you dont like :/

Cheers. I was probably a bit flippant with my wording when I posted, I just edited that a bit more to reflect that. The pedal has it's place and I understand that it is not a direct clone but pedalpcb take on the circuit, to be more what I was inteding to bring across.

No regrets the pedal has it's place too and it's always fun building.
All I'm saying is that in my personal opinion the pedalpcb Mercurial boost wins for me over the pedalpcb Malificent Mids.
That's probably the tidiest I can say it.

I built a JHS mid boost a few years ago.. .liked it, but wish it were a little more tweakable. Now I see this with the RES control. Is there a schematic somewhere with the res mod that I can apply to what I've built?

Is there the trimmer in your PCB?

Actually, I noticed the PCB by PedalPCB now is different than the one in the image above. No more charge pump (it has just the two op-amp, indeed), and there's no any trimmer.

Maybe this Magnifico is not the JHS Haunting Mids?

It's the earlier PCB of the earlier production of the haunting mids. From what I gather, JHS changed the circuit and thus did PPCB.

I'd like to get the old schematic, too.
