Looking for some opinions... Is this kit or similar kits a good idea to get started building pedals?

I'd recommend buying parts kits from Smallbear:

those polyester type capacitors are very large for everything > 220n. I would not recommed it.
If this is your first project, I would buy single items from specialized vendors like smallbear, musikding, uk-electronik.de (depending on where you're from). If you don't like building you'd end up with a large number of caps you don't need. You can also go for a kit that includes everything you need for your first build.
Once you are fully committed to the hobby/addiction, you can order in bulk (50-100 pcs) from distributors like mouser, digikey, arrow etc. You need to have a good understanding of what you're looking for when buying with them, because the huge amount of options will likely lead to some wrong parts (leg spacing, voltage...)

You should learn the relative norms of the pedal building community--it makes buying parts much, much easier. For film caps (usually used for 1000pf to 1uF), you're basically looking for caps with a 5mm lead spacing. You have to be roughly aware that some 5mm spaced caps are really tall or wide and might not fit, but basically that's what you want. If you want a kit, then Small Bear makes a lot of sense because it caters to these norms. But in the future you're going to want to source your own caps on an individual basis, so when you look up a part on Mouser, as an example, just check the attributes for lead spacing and size and you're off and running.
