Title: Big Muff 2
Post by: LaceSensor on December 14, 2025, 11:15:35 AM
What are people thinking about the latest Big Muff out there ?
https://jhspedals.info/products/big-muff-2

JHS x EHX have put out a second collaboration, borne out of Bob Myers rotting garage.
The video is worth a watch, mostly to see how endearing Bob is and how unpretentious he is about everything.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ykqj6ccts5U&t=66s

Ive breadboarded the circuit as it appeared on the hand written notes and its pretty interesting.
Like a couple of the demo-ers on YT noted (example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9HjfNVVrS8), its strong on bass side and there is an undercurrent of fatness that I would say is almost omnipresent, with a middy-fuzz on top. You can hear that around 19 mins or so in the video - super interesting.

The sustain is pretty high from the offset, and adds some sizzle and hair as you up it. I wouldnt say the gain or for that matter the volume is in any way lacking. I played around with making the first gain (sustain) stage higher gain and didnt feel it was helpful. Even at max sustain now, you get some motorboarding artefacts - again seen in the video above around 18mins in.

Overall a fun addition to the lore of EHX Big Muff, not sure its that exciting to justify the $250 price point and I would have rather they did something more "out there", but maybe there is a more to come after they test the water with a low-barrier, high selling item like a fuzz/distortion.

Aside:

I decided to make a PCB for myself as an Xmas project because I cant justify buying new pedals right now, and having shared that a few people asked for one. I've therefore made a small pre-order for some standard 3pdt-type boards (rather than my own relay one) for sale. Let me know if you want to grab one.

I'm curious about how it sounds in person. I've seen the videos, but with the YouTube compression, I'm not sure how it really sounds. There's a nano available now. It's 122.00 which isn't terrible.

Here's what I was able to pick off from the drawings that are out there now.

It's got this bass that is always felt below the fuzz. Kinda cool, definitely different enough to warrant exploring.

Yep that's the same as I've posted to FSB
So as the doctors say, I concur!

Good to know I was seeing the same stuff as you. I think it sounds pretty rad to be honest.

Maybe I'll just give this one to the community to do with as they please!

Cool. I got a 1590B enclosure just looking for a circuit.

This is seriously cool! Well done, both of you. I feel like garbage, so I sat laid down in bed and started adapting the mayonnaise fuzz mods/controls to the deuce. Won't breadboard them until I can sit properly, but there's a good chance at least one of the switches is placed wrong, as well as values needing tweaked, but it's the first bit of creative juice I've gotten in a while.

Personally I think this falls under the YABM category. There is hardly a sound this thing can make that I can't get out of that classic "overdrive into big muff" combination.
It's great that we already have the option to build one ourselves though.

As much as I'm skeptical about anything these days, especially from JHS (not a hater) it's really cool to see ANYTHING that anyone can get excited about.  I certainly applaud digging up cool stuff that never came to market.  I'm currently in my Helix phase (just as Stadium takes over) and at some point will realize I still need my pedals.  Does this thing make the cut?  Doubt it.  For the life of me I've never been able to use a Muff.  The other guitar player in my childhood band...Muff central.  I just don't get it.  If he plays it...magic...if I play it...garbage.

using my weird IO with top mount jacks and relay bypass ...and 1/8W resistors

Edit: fart. Didn't realize how similar it is to Bean's. Just came together that way.

Brian, do you charge the layer colors to get them more pleasantly dark?

Is it really different enough from the regular opamp muff to justify a new release?

Yes, I have the most used layers set to custom colors to make everything easy on my eyes. I can share the settings if you want.

That would be great! Thanks.

Now if only the rest of the UI had a dark mode.

Having some fun.

This one's gonna be laser etched, with the soot in place and sealed for the black. I'll upload the art of anyone wants it.

This will change your colors for both schematic and layout to the ones I use. The difference is my colors are much more muted in both to reduce eye strain. Only the most used layers have color changes so you can modify the rest as you like. Please be sure to back any important pref files before making this change and I don't take any responsibility for changes you make. That said, it's straight forward. This is for 7.7. I've attached a zip of the SCR I use if you wanna skip all that stuff.

DO NOT PASTE THIS IN THE delauftcolors.scr - create a separate one.

Just a heads up my PCB is verified working now, and I am 99% confident in the component values. Someone with a real one checked them off.

A heads up, I have also tested various volume pots, and personally prefer the A100K
B10K works fine just gets LOUD fast, duh.

I imagine anything 10k or 100k would be fine, your preference.

Edit
Ok so i did a bit more testing. I think the A100k pot for volume sounds significantly preferable to my ears at least vs the 10k
This is a change in isolation, I didnt adjust anything else vs my redrawn schematic.

Verified my board tonight. Am experiencing the 'max sustain artefacts' LaceSensor mentioned over on PPCB, but there's enough to go around without diming it.

This thing is ...gutsy. Just pushes and pushes. I want to play a bit with components and values and see what mayhem I can get up to.

What did you select for volume control?
Tbh those artefacts are only there when not playing, and who expects a big muff to be quiet lol?

Fair enough. It just feels louder than others I've built, but might be due to the volume pot.

I'll poke around and swap it if it's the base 10k. Nope just rechecked my board post, and I used a linear because tradition.

Logarithmic? On an output volume? Who would've thought‽ I was building it to just see if it worked first 😂 but I might could have rechecked.
