Title: Question: What are these compact/skinny potentiometers?
Post by: brand0nized on March 29, 2012, 07:00:42 AM
I found these today, and I'm wondering if I can use them with my future pedal builds. This would come in handy when I'm trying to fit the newly released Baby Boards into a 1590LB box (2"x2"x1" the ones you see people use for tap tempo).

Hi,

you are looking at a standard long-shaft push/pull guitar pot.
I am not sure if the picture does fit the description in the cataloge.
It could also be a pot with on/off switch at the "zero" position but I wont go for it.
I dont see how this will help fitting things in small enclosures as it is quite large.

You may want to use 9mm Alpha pots with small knobs which would give you more space.

I guess I don't know enough about pots yet. The bill of materials doesn't specify a certain mm pot, so what difference is there in 9mm, 16mm, 25mm, etc?

It refers to the width of the pot. I think it actually refers to the resistance wafer internally. Think about it - 9mm is smaller than 16mm is smaller than 24...

Thanks! So does it matter what mm I use as long as I get the correct resistance (100K, etc)?

Nope, as long as the value and taper is correct you're golden.
