Title: Dead power supply ?
Post by: add4 on April 15, 2012, 11:20:11 AM
So i plugged my eventide timefactor in yesterday, and the unit stopped working then restarted, then stopped working again. i knew there was a problem to it and thought it was a crack in the solder joint of the DC jack, so i just left it like that, and played a bit.
After a moment i smelled something burning, looked at my power supply, and realized that there was a big short between the + and ground sides of the power supply.

I opened the PS box and cut a bit of the cable so theres no short anymore. but it doesn't seem to work anyway.
Should i change the diodes into the power supply? or is it dead? the transformer into it is still smelling a bit..

I'd suspect it bein fried.

What kind of supply is it? Did you build it?

I would also suggest that perhaps the issue is not enough current to power the Timefactor.

It's the original eventide power supply..

What do you think is fried? the PS, or the timefactor :s ?

I opened the PS and there only a few diodes and electrolytic capacitors in there.. maybe i should try to replace the diodes (1N4001 package, but i read S0xxx on them).
I was thinking i should replace the diodes, then maybe the transformer.. or get a new power supply (the time factor needs 1mA, 9VDC). I tried to power the time factor with a 500mA supply, heard it was enough, but the plug doesn't match the regular boss DC plug.. i wonder why, maybe theres something special to it, or it's a kind of protection to prevent a regular supply to be used? reverse polarity maybe?..
i don't know, but i don't have delay anymore at the moment :( ..

and i just saw some timeline videos and i'm having a GAS attack :p

There should be some marking on the timefactor powersupply which would indicate the polarity.

I'd contact Eventide first at this point. Because it's one of their products they're better equipped to helping you deal with all of this.

I have a Timeline, it's pretty sweet. However, if I already had had a timefactor before getting it I wouldn't have switched over.

THanks i contacted them .. hope i didn't kill my TF.
I'll try to probe my eventide supply with my multimeter to see if something is going out of it.. if it works, then my TF is dead.. if it doesn't maybe both are dead :p .

Just found an adaptator for the DC jack, plugged my 450mA supply into the TF and it's alive .. the power supply is fried, but the unit is working it's already a great news..
