Title: Shoot the Moon (on an effdub/culturejam board)
Post by: midwayfair on May 28, 2012, 03:40:54 AM
Finally got this boxed up today. I've been busy actually playing music the last two weeks ( :o ), so it limited the time I could dedicate to drilling and soldering (grr! sorta).

I think Culturejam still has a couple of these. This is a fantastic Tremulus Lune variant. It just sounds better than the other two Lunes I've built -- quieter and clearer, an almost watery sound even without the tremolo on. I spent a lot of time planning the art and took my time, and I think it's one of the best boxes I've done. The earth is actually three dimentional since there's so many layers of paint on it.

I wired it for a single green LED that blinks in time with the effect. The 3PDT board is from 1776effects.

I did make one mistake. Wrong colors on the 9v and ground wires. Oh well. :)

Very cool. Nice job on this build. I just finished mine as well, it is awesome for sure. One thing I notice is my blinking LED is always on even when the pedal is disengaged? Does your pedal do this? If not, how did you wire it to turn off?

The led that is always blinking is not a stanby/on status led, it have the only purpose of being an indicator for the trem.

If you want a status led you'll have  to wire it off board.

Yeah, GrindCustoms is right, took me a while to figure this out, but the circuit inside a "true bypass" pedal is always "on" when it receives +9V, the 3PDT only switches it in the signal path (or not). Quite the revelation!

Great looking job as always!

I took the blinker LED and connected it to the 3pdt for a status indicator.  I tied it on to a 1k resistor I think, forget which component #.

I also took a 1M and tied it from the output to gnd for a pull down as I was getting a slight pop, most likely from a leaky cap at the output.

Love the "shoot the moon" version of the trem lune!  Very musical.

Yup, yours is working correctly. That LED blinks in time with the pulse so that you can always see what the rate is. Some people find that useful, but I was a little more concerned about aesthetics. :) Wire the + side of the LED to the square hole for the rate LED on the board, and the - side of the LED to the switch as you would normally and it will only turn on and blink when the switch is flipped. You should not need an additional current limiting resistor - my Green LED is fairly dim as it is.

If you want to get really high speed, use a two-color LED. Wire one anode to the board and the other to the +9v (WITH a CLR in this case!) and the cathode to the switch as normal. Now it'll blink one color when it's off and another when it's on.

Nice job, Midway. I love that paint job. Very classy!

The secondary blinking LED was intended to be on always, so that you can see the speed (and also the relative depth) even when the pedal is bypassed. I thought gigging guys might appreciate this. I figured most people would add a second indicator LED to show bypass/effect.

But as has been pointed out, you can also wire it up so that the speed indicator is also the bypass indicator.

Cool. Thanks for the LED info fellas. I actually have a status LED hooked up as well as the blinker. I think I want them both on/off at the same time, not sure yet.

Yeah, if I were gigging with this, I might feel differently about not knowing what it was set to before I started. :)

Thanks again for the very cool board, culturejam. My Neptune will be ready probably next week. It's tons of fun, but I'm waiting on one of the soft touch momentaries from Smallbear before putting it in a box. I've been using a 3PDT latching switch to test it. And I've got some perf projects demanding my attention. Like a 1590A Llama I'm soldering up right now ...

Great paint job! The matching knobs are a nice touch.
