Title: Magnavibe PCB (Gauging Interest)
Post by: raulduke on July 12, 2012, 08:53:10 AM
Hi Guys,

My last batch of PCB designs that I had fabbed included a Magnavibe clone.

This circuit sounds fantastic; its like a subtle, swampy, vibrato tone.

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in one if I ordered a batch?

I would also do a BOM/Build doc. for the PCB's.

I'll be able to give firm pricing later but I imagine it should work out to around £5-7.

The only slightly tricky bit of the build is getting a good LED and LDR combo.

I'll upload some photos of my build (and the PCB) later.

Let me know if you are interested.

Cheers.

I'd be interested in couple - I've built one on vero for myself, and it got "borrowed" by my mate for his rhodes, and never came back  ;D

I'd be interested in this, and I trust you have some tips on the choice of LED/LDR?

Yeah sure thing.

I used a superbright blue LED in mine along with this LDR: http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/search/productdetail.jsp?SKU=RE05271 (http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/search/productdetail.jsp?SKU=RE05271)

The FSB thread has also got some useful info on it:

http://www.freestompboxes.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=12539&p=191327&hilit=magnavibe#p191327 (http://www.freestompboxes.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=12539&p=191327&hilit=magnavibe#p191327)

The LED/LDR combo is not mission critical; it will work with pretty much any LED and LDR, its just some tweaking may be required to get maximum 'wobble'  ;)

This does sound cool. Any idea what the bottom line would be for us in the U.S. shipped?

Also, do you know the dimensions (width mainly) on the board? The second picture looks a little funny. :)

Sounds cool, I'd be in too  8)

Good Stuff.

The bottom line I will try and get to will be around £8 (shipped) hopefully. Hopefully I could get it down less.

The PCB measures 1.9" x 1.25" and is designed for PCB mounted pots. Will easily fit in a 1590B.

I used normal pots in the build shown, and stuck the PCB down with twinstick; hence why its not centred.

I think I can get it into in a 1590A. Ergo, I'm in. :D

Ok, some guys on BYOC are in as well.

I'll tot up numbers but I think the order will be around 25 PCB's.

I'll put the order in ASAP.

Cheers Guys!

If the order isn't placed, I'm in for 1.

Ok guys a heads up on this one...

I posted about it on my blog and got an email from Bigfoot FX, politely asking not to sell copies of his pedal/circuit.

Sounds fair to me.

Therefore, I couldn't really get a batch of PCB's made without feeling pretty bad about it (Bigfoot FX were very polite and reasonable), even if they were for DIY use only.

Hope you guys understand...

Understandable  :(

There are more pedals to build.

Damn, I just found this trying to decide what to build next. I see you have been asked not to do these but could you point me in a direction. I found the vero for this and wanted to know if this is the same? I can etch myself a pcb if I can get a hand on a decent printer

You could build something very similar on perf. If you download my Perfboard library, there's a thing in there called "Shoot the Warbler." It's the LFO from CultureJam's Shoot the Moon driving the LED for the dry path of the Blue Warbler (which is very very close to the Magnavibe/Wobbletron). It also has a ramp switch and is small enough to fit in a 1590A. You could adjust the values to go back to the Magnavibe ones if you want it to sound like that pedal and less like the Magnatone amps it purports to emulate (I've compared both to the real amp side by side).

EDIT: I know it's not the same pedal, but I think the different LFO would add some fun. There are perf and vero layouts for the Magnavibe on FSB.
