Looks great! I love mine. It's got NKT214s, but I think this circuit sounds great no matter what transistor is in there.

Does the volume control let you use the balance more like a bias control (which it actually is, to my knowledge)?

Thanks.  The volume lets you really tweak the timbre and balance to any extreme and make up the loss in volume.  So yes, it is well worth the extra pot.
