Title: Capacitors
Post by: billstein on March 08, 2013, 01:03:18 AM
I need to order some of the boxed capacitors. I was looking at Mouser but that place just confuses me right now. What kind do you use? Brand name? Voltage etc.

Thanks guys

I just ordered a grip of them for my Multiplex and echo base builds. I picked them up at http://www.taydaelectronics.com/capacitors/polyester-film-box-type-capacitors.html (http://www.taydaelectronics.com/capacitors/polyester-film-box-type-capacitors.html)

This is the first time I have ever used them since I am a fan of the "greenies" but the multiplex board looks so sweet and clean with the box caps.

If I remember right.. when ordering box caps you just need to get the standard 5mm pin spacing. Everything else will not sit flat on the PCBs. I could be wrong about this.. so I would wait for others to comment. But I mainly just wanted to share the link to Tayda and to let you know that I ordered from there with no issues.

Here are two Mouser search prefixes:

505-mks20 (this is for Wima branded caps)
mmk5 (this is for Kemet branded caps)

Put either of those in the search, then choose your value. Lower value for Tolerance is better, but you may not get all values with the lowest. The Wima also gives you a Voltage option and, for most pedals, 50v or 63v are fine.

Also make sure you chose 5mm lead spacing.  Some of the box caps can get pretty large.

The two prefixes I provided are both 5mm spacing; I got them from this thread, which you may also find helpful: http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=2970.0 (http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=2970.0)

The EPCOS/TDK box caps are nice caps. Avnet carries them for good prices. You can search for them using the part number B32529C1. That should bring them all up. The Avnet storefront is

https://avnetexpress.avnet.com

Mouser carries them too, but Avnet's prices are better. (They also have much better prices on all TI parts than anyone else. You can get OPA2134's there for really good prices.)

That is a great thread. Good to see others get lost at Mouser and it's not just me being stupid.

Obviously just a desperate attempt here to add to my post count.

I wanted to order a small supply of the box capacitors to have on hand. Is there some common values that I should have. I tried to do a search on this but obviously my search abilities are rubbish.
