Title: HoneyDripper 1/2 working
Post by: stevenrun on March 08, 2013, 06:18:23 AM
I finished up my HoneyDripper and noticed something strange.

Switch Positions 2 and 4 sound right. Position 4 has a little bit of squealing in the background, but positions 1 and 3 aren't getting any envelope applied. The sweep control does nothing, but the fuzz (clean) seems to work.

I'm checking the values on everything, but I just wanted to see if there was something stupidly obvious to check.

I don't have any spare CA3080Es to test but I tried swapping out all the other ICs to no avail.

As per the build instructions I changed the values on a few components:

C2: 680pf Ceramic disc
R5: 270K
R21: 2K

I took voltage readings of all the ICs as well:

Have you made sure that the switch is working properly? Do you get continuity between A and 1, and also between B and 5 when you have it in position 1?

I do. I said I got effect in postions 2 and 4, that was reading left to right... actual switch positions that the effect works in are 1 and 3. 2 and 4 pass signal and the fuzz control works, but no envelope.

It wouldn't have surprised me if I had installed the switch incorrectly, but it seems to be correct. Thanks for the suggestion though :)

In position 1 I have continuity between:
A1 - A2 - B5

Position 2:
A1 - A2 - B6 - B8

Position 3:
A3 - A4 -B7

Position 4:
A3 - A4 - B6 - B8

Just another guess but pos 2 and 4 are both connecting to 6 and 8 from the schematic which just connects 10v through r25....are you sure r25 is ok? can you get an ohm reading of 2m2 between the 10v and switch pin6?

Sheesh.... It would appear I have installed a 2k2 instead of a 2M2 in R25.

I bet that has something to do with it.

Replacement of r25 with the correct value has really made a huge difference. I'm going to play with this some more and triple-check the values of my other resistors.

Thanks very much for the help.

Having same issue. Getting fuzz from one pot, but no effect from  4 way switch or sweep pot. Checked all resistor and cap values.  Any have same experience ?

Also 3p4t switch is getting hot.  Smells like burning, but no smoke or anything.   Is this a bad switch?

ok solved it...switch is fine.  I had IC5 in backwards so it was heating up and killing the effect.  All good now. gonna change D3&D4 to  1n34a to try and get more effect, but sounds pretty good already.
