Title: Zen drive Mosfet Clippers?!?
Post by: hammerheadmusicman on April 18, 2013, 05:15:46 PM
So i've built two of theses things, one from a serendipity etch, which sounds killer, the other is a grind customs feng drive (1590A). The serendipity sounded so good that i put the mosfets clippers in so the circuit is the same as the bean schematic.

The feng has tons more distortion!

I used 2n7000's in the serendipity, but when i came to build the feng, I did have any left, so i used BS170, obviously swapping the pinout.

Do you think the BS170's are causing the fact that there are lots more distortion? Those are literally the only components different.

I'm sure some of you diode/FV wizards will be able to give me a good answer!

thanks

George

a little mosfet clipping hijack, what about subbing J113 for 2n7000?

Well, the 2n7000 sound really good, it's the BS170 that seem to be really gainy! It goes up to nearly fuzz sounding territory!

Different source-drain diode characteristics, most likely. You could try measuring them both ways and seeing what the Fv drops are.
