Just saw this:

Was researching this transistor because I just bought a Pepperspray board. Seems pretty Unobtainium, until I found this. Somebody in the US should buy them all (make them a good offer for the whole lot...) and redistribute among all the Madbeaners.... ;)

? 2n404a's not remotely unobtaneum. You can get them on Ebay all day long, and Smallbear carries them. This is a good price for them, but there's nothing special about the transistor, and Smallbear's tested ones are only $7.

Good point there Jon, you're completely right  :-[ But considering my situation, they're still a bit hard to get. I'm a bit reluctant in getting parts from E-bay, as I've read some scary stories here on that, and I don't want to order from SB for just 1 or 2 transistors, I'm really trying to cut back on shipping costs.... Apart from that, here in Europe they are unobtainium!

Thats from a local store in portland. I brought two, they were low hfe and leaky. i ended up using some MP16B russian transistors in the peppersprays I built, i thought they sounded far better, and they were cheaper.

I live in Portland and I recently stopped in and bought some. The ones I got were low gain/low leakage (which is good for pepper spray). If you want one for the pepper spray I've got one or two I can sell to you on the cheap. PM me if interested...

You could try this place: http://markhindes.easywebstore.co.uk/searchresults.aspx?searchterm=2n404 Its based in the UK. I've bought a handful of 2N404's from them. They also have the MP16B's.

I've used Mark Hindes for plenty of 'mojo' stuff and he is fab.
He may be a tad more expensive than ebay, but there is far less risk involved buying from him!

I dont want to sound pessismist but a lot of things that Mark sells  come from Ebay . He just resell it at a higher price .
