Title: The Mysterons - Madbean Doombutter
Post by: Guybrush on September 03, 2013, 09:31:37 PM
So after 2 botched attempts and lots of swearing I finally got my Doombutter boxed and working.

I've included the feedback mod and the LDR select mod. Both really add to the pedal and I definitely recommend including them to anyone building their own.

Thank you massively for everyone who helped me with my questions regarding this build. Special shout out to Bigrigg. Thanks man. The etch is by the always great Haberdasher.

Guts are dreadful as usual. I just can not seem to ever get them neat. I'll keep trying!

I love the pedal and it's really enjoyable to play with. No idea how I'll ever crowbar it into a song but I'll certainly try.

Cheers.

Glad you got it working. Ive made a basic one without the mods in a B but am thinking about building another with all the mods, external ldr etc. probably have to go with a BB.
Have you got a schemo or wiring diagram of the mods that i could use please?

Looks great! If you get a chance can you do a demo audio/video of it? I would love to compare it to one I built. Its such an odd effect, its hard to tell if its working "properly" lol.

Cheers guys.

I've wanted to finish this one for months but with one thing or another I just haven't found the time. Definitely worth the wait though. It's great fun.

I'll post some wiring diagrams for the mods later and I'll try do do a quick video demo at some point soon. This might not transpire though as my guitar playing skills are about on par with my soldering ones.

Thanks.

Looks like it sounds, kind of scary and mysterious.  The exterior LDR is cool too.  I still haven't figured out a use for mine yet but maybe, with the blend turned kind of low it would fit in to actual music somehow.

That looks great.  The font really matches the theme.

Cheers guys!

So... the mods...

I have to stress that none of these mods are my work. Bigrigg came up with the feedback mod and possibly also the LDR mod (not sure about that though). Other Madbeaners also helped me out with the wiring.

Fuzz Lift:
This is now built into the build doc so no need to describe it here. Just make sure you're using the latest version of the build doc and have the board with the fuzz lift pads on it.

Feedback:
In my build this only works in fuzz mode (there is a very slight delay in clean mode but it's barely noticeable). When engaged the delay goes from a couple of repeats to all out mayhem. Which is of course a good thing!

External LDR:
Sorry for the small picture but you should get the idea. This mod works really well. Especially good in clean mode where it can be difficult to get the internal LDR to trigger. The legs of the LDR that is glued to the LED are 'floating' and are not connected to the board but to the DPDT switch, hopefully the picture explains this.

Hope this helps anyone who is struggling to get to grips with the mods as I was.

Cheers

Looks fabulous, and thanks for the diagrams. As for the wiring, yours came out much cleaner than mine.

Congrats!  That looks awesome.  So glad you finally got it together and working.  Don't worry about the guts being less than perfect.  At the end of the day, you and others will see the finished enclosure and hear the cool music and sounds coming out of that box!  As for the repeats on the clean, I find that using the volume and feedback knob together allow for much more.  Adjust these vs their settings for the fuzz setting.  Musical uses for the LDR repeats.....if the delay setting is longer and more spacious, you can really notice the changes in its modulation for a nice effect.  If the settings are short, you can do a quick sweep of the LDR for an obvious modulation change from one extreme to the next.  Just some ideas.  Enjoy!

Thanks Bigrigg. It was good to get it up and running and the mods make it a better effect in my opinion.  Good work!

I spent a good while tinkering with the knobs and switches last night and what you said about the feedback working n conjunction with the volume is spot on. You have to fiddle for a bit but you can get some great sounding wobbly delays that work really well.

Definitely going to try and do a quick video demo this weekend.

What are you using to secure your ldr? Really like the looks of that ring.

Thanks guys. It's appreciated.

The ring round the LDR bezel is just a washer. I drilled the hole a little to large so needed the washer to hold the bezel in place.

Your pedal looks pretty awesome! I've had one of these on the backburner for a long time, your helping to get me inspired to finish it!
Thanks for posting your diagrams.

It looks sweet.  Thanks for sharing your mods.

Very cool. There should be more Anderson-show-themed pedals. 8)
