Title: NVPD!
Post by: Cortexturizer on January 27, 2014, 03:12:52 PM
Another New Vintage Pedal Day! :D

I am incredibly happy to report that I have become an owner of a Colorsound Supa Wah Fuzz Swell pedal!

Here it is in action

[soundcloud]https://soundcloud.com/earthless/colorsound-supa-wah-fuzz-swell[/soundcloud]

The wah side is scratchy, I'll see what I can do about that, and the Tone pot is dead, it works only on zero so the recorded sound is with the Tone pot all the way down. I am beyond happy, the wah sound is just that meow meow thin funky thing that I was looking for my whole life, and the fuzz is an incredible monster. Silicon Jumbo Tone Bender [if I did my research right] that has sustain for days, and just has that raunchy, incredible tone, AWESOME.
The transistor on both the wah and the fuzz side are BC184C.
here's the shot of the interiors

I'll make a picture or two of the exteriors tomorrow morning, it's in really good shape.

Wow, that's a beautiful piece of gear!! I dig the synthy sounds at minute 1:42.

My guitar teacher has a Coloursound wah and it really helps bringing the funk out!

Thank you guys!

What's even more epic, is that I've been e-mailing with Anthony Macaris the whole morning! I didn't even think that guys at MAcaris will respond. Not just that he responded, he thinks he has pots for this baby sitting in a drawer for 30 years. I am living a vintage dream just now :D

I know the feeling, I had a repair tech that I found that worked at Roland and helped with the Juno 60 and I was able to score some parts from him. There is nothing quite like that feeling. Its like needing a part and finding it in your drawer and not knowing you had it.. but multiplied by 100. lol

That is awesome!! Congrats, man.  Pure pedal porn.

I got a (plain) colorsound wah and know what you mean, nothing sounds like that, I wonder if that's because of the circuit or also the mechanic system with that plastic shaft to drive the pot. Whatever it is, sounds sexy and funky, the travel is longer than usual too.

Thanks guys, yeah it's a killer!
I hope those fantastic dudes at Macaris will find a replacement pot for it, although having heard my clip even Joe Gagan thinks it might not even be the pot at all, Imma gonna investigate some more after work.

Just got a definitive YES from Macaris. I sent them pictures of my pot, they sent me pictures of their "30 years in a drawer" pot, it is a perfect match. Can't believe it :D

And I have an epilogue of this amazing story. The pot finally, after 26 days [I mean come on!], arrived and it wasn't good! The wah taper was odd, and the volume function was really bad it would go to zero and then start leaking volume again. I spent HOURS trying to find the best pot position with no luck. Just a step down overall from the old scratched pot.

And then I decided to try out juansolo's advice, and swap the wafers. Opened both pots, replaced the wah portion with the new pot's wafer, and kept the old volume wafer just cleaned it with a simple toothbrush. Bam. Everything starts working PERFECTLY. Killer. Absolute killer. Taper on the volume function becomes best taper on a volume pedal ever, super transparent can't detect any change in tone. Wah function works flawlessly, different to how it worked before but in a similar ballpark. Actually, when I took the old scratchy wah wafer and cleaned it, it looked in better shape than the one that I installed so I might try that one in the future, it's cool having it as a spare. I think it actually works now though I haven't tried it, because at one point even the volume function started crackling and after cleaning the pot it became normal again. After all the work I sealed the pot from every side with duct tape so that dirt won't come through and started rocking the pedal. Absolutely satisfied now.

Fucking bliss.

Wow Cortex I completely missed this thread until now. That thing sounds so incredible in your hands (and foot). You have to be absolutely stoked. Congrats. I think it was written in the stars for you to have this pedal  :)

Thanks so much Pryde! Yeah, I am :D

I wrote about my experience some more here - https://www.facebook.com/groups/GearTalk/permalink/607416496004703/

Really wanted to let as much people as possible know how much Macaris rocks.

And that is awesome that they rock so much after this much time! I would not have guessed that would be the case.

I wonder if Josh's Sucker Punch is close to this fuzz? It sounds really good, and the wah obviously does too.
