Title: TV Series - What Are You Watching?
Post by: culturejam on February 25, 2014, 03:45:29 PM
We've got movies covered in its own thread, and I find myself spending my viewing time on TV series rather than movies these days. It's the golden area of great serial programming, in my opinion.

What I'm currently watching (or waiting to come back with a new season):

Game of Thrones
Vikings
Sons of Anarchy
Falling Skies
Breaking Bad (just about to finish this one, so no spoilers!!)
The Walking Dead (also not to the current episode yet)

Things I plan to watch:
The Red Road (on Sundace, starring "Khal Drogo" from GOT)
Shameless
House of Cards

Just finished second season of House of Cards, it was great, not that great as the first that was f-in spectacular but a worthy successor.

True Detective maintains my attention from week to week, mainly due to the actors, and in particular, Woody with his ridiculous and hilarious facial expressions, I mean it's just stupid how fun that guy is haha. Great show overall. So far.

House of Cards (phenomenal, can't say enough about it)
The Blacklist (best written show on network television in a long time, scared it can't continue at the level it's at)
Sons of Anarchy
The Following
Big Bang Theory
2 Broke Girls

I don't watch a lot of TV, but when I do, it's usually lame.

I watch the Arrow and Marvel's Shield show. I liked Grimm, but I'm way behind on that one. I also really enjoyed watching the Clone Wars series.

Also, the Blacklist is so much fun to watch. James Spader is the greatest thing in the show, and pretty much everything else pales in comparison to him.

The BBC Sherlock show is fantastic, and I really look forward to each miniseries set released.

Also, my wife watches that Downton Abbey show, so i guess I end up watching that too.

1) Blacklist (James Spader is a phenomenal actor!)
2) The Following (6 degrees of Kevin Bacon)
3) Big Bang Theory (No question why Jim Parsons wins the award every year!)
4) Breaking Bad (2 more episodes to watch before its all done  :'()

Want to start watching:
- Walking Dead
- Mad Men
- House of Cards

Walking Dead is a walking fail fest. The behavior of the characters contradicts any reason, the plot is shaky and frankly full of holes, the acting is really really bad, the only thing that stands out are of course the zombie effects. Not worth watching at all IMHO. I did endure for almost two seasons. Now I wish I'd made a couple of pedals instead.

True Detective (HBO) *AWESOME*
Helix (SCI FI) *starting to go downhill*
The Walking Dead (AMC) *getting ready to throw in the towel*
Hannibal (NBC) *amazing first season looking forward to season 2, starts Friday!*

WORST ENDING EVER!!!!

Personally, I think that the producers, writers, etc. had to scramble when people starting guessing the whole "purgatory/after-life" plot around Season 2. They had to re-write almost the entire show. Just too many holes in the story and too many questions left unanswered.

Thoughts??

Side Note: I was returning from a business trip in Hawaii to LA a few years ago and guess who was sitting right behind me? THIS GUY!

Never saw it but my son watched every series on Netflix until he was caught up to real time on TV. He was so excited about that last show and how they'd bring it all together. He still talks about how mad he is about the way they ended it. How long has it been now? 2 years maybe.
Made me glad I never got into it.

While we're on the topic of bad series endings, the Dexter ending was pretty lousy as well.  There are so many ways they could have ended it (good or bad for him) that would have worked, and they went with one that made no sense whatsoever, and had no intensity (but left the door open to pick up the series later I guess).

The SOA finale next year will be epicly bloody methinks.  It can't end any other way.  Everyone dies.

The Breaking Bad finale was perfect.  'Nuff said.

Shows I usually watch:

American Horror Story
The Bridge
Top Chef
Ultimate Fighter
American Ninja Warrior (son loves it)

Want to watch:

The Americans

Six Feet Under (Favorite series of all time)

Current hows I watch throughout the year:
Walking Dead (because who doesn't)
Shameless (the name says it all!)
Mad Men (falling off a bit lately)
True Blood (because my wife makes me)
Californication (WARNING: your wife/girlfriend will not like this one!)
How I met your mother (I'm going to finish this series no matter how bad this season gets!)
Parenthood (cheesy but good)
Boardwalk Empire (They killed off my favorite character and I've lost my motivation on this one. Need to catch up!)

Recommended shows no longer on the air:
Six Feet Under (best last episode to a series ever! Great from start to finish.)
Dexter (worst last episode to a series ever! Good from start to 2nd to last episode!)
Breaking Bad
Curb Your Enthusiasm (pretty, pretty, pretty good!)

I was originally thinking of "legit" series on the cable networks, but I guess major network sit-coms and dramadies other other trash-tv shows are okay too.  :)

Reality stuff I like:
Top Chef
Chopped
Bar Rescue
Gold Rush (even though it's total garbage now)

Since we're going with garbage as well, I must admit some guilty pleasures:

16 and Pregnant  ;D
Wife Swap
Lockup

I will admit... they kinda copped out with Dexter. I guess they wanted to leave a door open for a movie or something. Still dont regret watching..... unlike LOST! Seemed like 6 years of my life wasted 1 hour at a time with that ending!

Odd note: Anyone know that the woman who played Kate on lost got her start doing those late night "adult" chat line commercials?  ::)

I don't watch a lot of TV, but I'm going ape shit over walking dead. I do agree the way they talk ALL THE TIME in that super serious strained whisper gets annoying.

Carl still needs an ass whoopin though.   >:(

Gotta say, that statement creeps me out just a little bit.

I'm kidding.

In response to "making" her watch football all summer (we only have like four TVs, two iPads, and four laptops, it's not like she couldn't go watch something else if she wanted to), my darling beloved makes me watch Sister Wives and Honey Boo Boo.  I can literally feel my brain cells committing gracious acts of murder suicide during those hours of the week.  Remember when TLC stood for "The Learning Channel"?  Ain't no learning no more.

I assume you are equally being held hostage for 16 and Pregnant.

The wife and I have 2 set days a week that we catch up on TV shows. I really got tired of the sitcoms these days so this is just a list of shows I watch with her. She watched a TON of other stuff also. lol

The wife and I are currently watching:
The Walking Dead
True Detectives
Archer
Sherlock

Waiting for new seasons to start:
Hannibal
Bates Motel
Alaska: The Last Frontier

1) Breaking Bad (one of the best series ever)
2) Game of Thrones
3) Big Bang Theory (gets kinda old, but as a chemist, it's basically in my work contract to watch it)
4) IT crowd (most awesome british TV show ever! I know that lots of you guys overseas don't like british humor, but if you do, that is a must-see)
5) Black books (same as IT crowd)
6) House of Cards
7) Dexter (season 1,2 and 4 were awesome at least)

I basically watch everything, but these were the 7 that I remembered the fastest.
I hope it's ok for me to say, but The walking dead got soo bad in season 2 and even worse in season 3, you just had to stop watching...

I could see where it would sound kinda creepy. But hey, they are already knocked up when the show starts, so it's not exciting to predators...unless you're one of the really oddballs.  ;D  (which I'm not....seriously!)

I just love how the crap they complain about and comments they make are *so* the mindset of a teenager. I recall acting the same way as a teen, albeit without the loom specter of pregnancy to deal with.

Quote from: GermanCdnI assume you are equally being held hostage for 16 and Pregnant.

Nah, I actually like to watch it on occasion, for the reason mentioned above. It reminds me of my younger naive self in a lot of ways. The young "dads to be" are almost universally idiots (on account of their age and lack of experience). And most of the people on the show are southern of some kind, so the accent reminds me of home.  ;D

Well, I'm across the pond from the UK and I think both of those shows are fantastic.  I found Black Books after IT Crowd, but really enjoyed it as well.  I didn't think the IT Crowd series finale was quite up to the quality of the other seasons, but it was OK.  Maybe I'll like it better on the second viewing.

Are you a fan if the Mighty Boosh?  That's a bit of an odd one.

The Mighty Bush and Black Books are awesome!

Influenced by some of you who really really liked the Black List I just watched the first episode with my GF and I am really sorry to say this but I feel violated intelectual-wise. A big pile of nonsense, bad acting, catastrophic camera work and stupid one liners. I mean come on people...cant believe James Spader is actually doing that level of tv shows for living now...
And dont get me started on Serbian mobsters and terrorists, first the Americans had their Russians, then there were Bosnians, bit Arabs of course, and now every movie and now show I watch has Serbs as the bad guys...well thank you very much. :)

As a proper Serb I will recommend you a British show called Peep Show. It is, hands down, the best sitcom I have ever watched. Hilarious stuff, I think I watched every episode at least 5 times. And I still continue to watch. I have never seen a relationship between a man and a woman depicted in a better and more accurate way than in this show. You wont regret it.

You just have to love a drunken irish man making customers leave for no reason with a megaphone.
Never heard of the show you mentioned. But I will check it out. If it's british, I'll most likely dig it. Now that I finished House of Cards, I need something new while eating :)

Stomptown reminded me of Parenthood.

I try to act like I'm just watching it because my wife really likes it and being a good husband I watch it with her. But truth be told, I'm hooked. I take quite a bit of ribbing from my 21 year old son when we turn it on though.

Parenthood was ok, but we actually had all those characters in our family, so while the wife was saying "it's so realistic and well written", I was saying "We have all those people here - the off the rails daughter, the son with aspbergers, the failed musician who wants to run a recording studio, the grumpy father in law - I don't need to watch this!"

Get into:
- Game On (3 seasons, long gone Brit series about some housemates - a looser, an agrophobic, and a nympho)
- Being Human (watch the Brit version.  The US version is like watching the auditions)
- Misfits (Brit series.  Rough as guts in terms of the content sometimes, but the first 2 seasons are great.  Loses a bit without Nathan and "Barry" in the later seasons)
- Lie to Me
- Metal Evolution
- Metalopocalypse
- Grand Designs.

Oh, I didn't take it the wrong way at all.  Just expressing my fondness for those shows.

The Might Boosh is definitely British and very weird.  It has the actor who plays Richmond on the IT Crowd.  The boss from the IT Crowd is also on it from time to time.

If you guys like British comedy you should definitely check out father ted.

Same writers as it crowd, and even better IMO.

It is a loved show over here. The guy who played ted died after the 3rd series, so they can never make anymore.

It's probably my favourite comedy show of all time.

Alan partridge is worth checking out too.

Breaking Bad (just finished this, ideal ending)
The Bridge (watching Season 2)

Raally enjoying The Bridge at the moment, the original Swedish/Danish series that is, not seen the US remake.

Game of Thrones
Vikings
Walking Dead is terrible and I still watch it.
Hannibal
American Idol - Harry Connick makes it very watchable for me.  He has my humor.
Workaholics
Bob's Burgers
bar rescue - John Taffer is cool.
Almost Human
Teen Titans
Lost Girl
Supernatural

most of these shows have short seasons so it is not as much as it seems.

I wish Dateline would bring back that "To Catch a Predator" stuff since it was hinted at earlier.  I watch it everytime it is on even though there are only a few episodes and I have seen them all.  Especially the guy they caught twice.

Just seen The Bridge (original) season 2, followed by Braquo seasons 1&2 and Game of Thrones season 2. Need to pick up season 3 of GoT and crack on with that next.

For someone who doesn't watch TV, I do seem to watch a lot of TV programmes...

It's been said a couple of times, but True Detective. Oh my goodness. Definitely my favorite thing on TV at the moment. If you have HBO (or access to an HBOGo account) do yourself a favor and watch that show. Really love The Americans too. As far as stuff no longer on the air, the third to last episode of Breaking Bad (Ozymandias) might be the best thing I've ever seen on TV.

I wanted to like The Walking Dead. I really, really did. Was a huge fan of the first few dozen issues of the comic but then it started to suck. The show just never grabbed me at all.

I'll throw another endorsement out there for True Detective. It helps that Harrelson and McConoughey are top notch actors, but that is one hell of a well written and directed series.

there's probably not much canadian tv worth watching (sorry jacob), but they had a series a while back called Intelligence about some weed dealers that ran a strip club, and the govt agents that were investigating them.  it got canceled it after only 2 seasons, arrghhh!  i sincerely hope someone got fired over the cancellation, because that show freaking ruled.  anybody besides me ever watch it?

I split with my cheating ex last year (after the whole wedding was booked) and moved back to my parents. I didn't have a Sky box in my room at first so I used Netflix through my xbox. Really got into some TV shows that I'd never heard of. I loved Dexter, White Collar, Breaking Bad (stupidly slow story line but it was awesome). Just started watching The Sopranos again as I love mafia stuff, The Walking Dead (a zombi invasion will happen someday), Suits, Sons Of Anarchy, Pawn Stars, Storage Wars, How It's Made, and a few others. Generally, I just have the TV on in the back ground while I'm doing other stuff.

Quick question for the American guys, the prices they say they are going to sell the stuff they find in the storage lockers in Storage Wars, are they over inflated, or is that genuinely how much they can sell the stuff for?

generally speaking, those prices are real only if you find a wealthy motivated buyer.  real-world is usually about 25% of their quotes.  The show is scripted and the items in the storage spaces are planted.  So the financial aspect is as real as the medical part of 'House'.

there's probably not much canadian tv worth watching (sorry jacob)...

Occasionally we get super awesome shows that come out of Canada. You'd also be pretty interested to know exactly how many shows that are shot in Canada. Vancouver and Toronto get a lot of American shows/films shot there. It's cheaper you see.

Some of the best out of Canada:
Corner Gas
Degrassi (all of them)
Trailer Park Boys
Flashpoint
Kids in the Hall
Lost Girl
Vikings
The Littlest Hobo
Dragons Den (Became Shark Tank in the states)
Mr Dressup
Fraggle Rock
The Racoons
SCTV (Canadian SNL)
Today's Special
Being Erica
Due South

And of Course... Hockey Night in Canada (One of the longest running shows of all time. It started on the Radio, before there was TV, and has never taken a season off)

It's a doco series, but "Cities of the Underworld" is bloody amazing. Loved it for years, now. Shame it seems to have topped out at season 3.

"Deadliest Warrior" is interesting, but take things with a grain of salt. (A badly under-resourced general with kludged up cannons, up against someone with finely machined artillery, and the nous to use it... who wins? If you guessed the American, despite everything going against him, you'd be right!)

Another big Breaking Bad fan here. Probably the best series I've ever watched. I cannot recommend that one highly enough.

Walking Dead fan here too. Still not seen series 3 yet.

I also absolutely LOVE Game Of Thrones. Anyone who I explain it too looks at me like it has to be the most geeky show ever: 'there are rival families in a fantasy medieval world battling each other. With Dragons'

Then they watch it and realise its simply awesome  ;D

Watched the first series of Homeland too. Really great show, but I'm a bit worried they are just going to keep it running and running (could have done with resolving in the 1st series for me to be honest).

There aren't really any good British drama shows on anymore. So many good shows are coming out of the US at the moment, that we can't really compete.

For factual shows (history, culture, wildlife docs etc.) the BBC still cannot be beaten though. By anybody  ;D

Love all stuff with Graham Lineham's name on the writing: Father Ted, IT Crowd, Black Books. Raulduke, I totally agree, Father Ted is the greatest of them all. I remember the last ever episode was broadcast just two days after Dermot Morgan died. I was pissing myself, laughing at the comedy while trying to hold back the tears; very sad.

Anything by Larry David

I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Parks and Recreation", Ron Swanson is one of the funniest comic creations for a long time. "there's been a mistake: you appear to have served me the food that my food eats"!

Love the boosh, lots of in jokes and references for the benefit of musos. Howard Moon, "the greatest jazz trumpeter in Yorkshire"!
Pickdropper, If you think that is weird then you should watch "the league of gentlemen" a cross between monty python and hammer horror with a healthy dose of earthy, northern English humour in the mix. Not to everyones taste but I love it.

In a similar dark vein is "Ideal" with Johnny Vegas

also watching:

Big Bang Theory
Spaced
Phone Shop
Vic and Bob (dadaist nutjobs!)
Archer
Family Guy

The character Caitlin Ryan (from the original series, and then also reappearing on TNG) was Smith's inspiration for his Caitlin Bree in Clerks. He was always a massive fan of the original show.

We started watching Vikings as buffer viewing before the new GOT season  :)

However, we've got into it now and are on season 2.

It took a while for me to get into the tone/feel of the show, but once you get that they are trying to convey part of the 'real' viking way of life, it becomes really fun.

I love the fact the main character seems like he is stoned most of the time too (must be those mushrooms they pop before battle)  ;D

I also don't watch a ton of TV (and usually get sucked into any and all late night action movie reruns when I do ... think Matrix, Die Hard, Arnie, Transporter, 007, etc), but some of the better choices I've made:

The Fall (BBC)
Broadchurch (BBC)
Sherlock (BBC)
Game of Thrones
Boardwalk Empire
Walking Dead
The Wire
Homeland
The Bridge (Swedish/Danish)
The Killing (Danish)
Spiral (French)
Wallander (BBC)

... and then there's 24 ... ridiculous, okay, but I just can't shake it!

I started watching a little show called "I want to marry Harry" on Hulu.  12 American girls are on a reality bachelor type show and the bachelor looks like Prince Harry.  The man and the show never tell the girls his identity, the girls are just led to deduce it is Harry.  The guy really does have an uncanny resemblance to the prince and the girls stir themselves into knots making linkages between their situation and Prince Harry.

It is fun television whether scripted or not.

The Killing: Just finished this season, It was pretty good but not as good as the first case.
The Knick: I am hooked so far. I really dig Clive Owen's acting also.
The Leftovers: Keeps me guessing and I love that.
Drunk History: Just cause.

Side note, I also re-watched True Detectives and I picked up on a few things I missed the first round. I really enjoyed it and look forward to the new season, even though it will be a new cast.

I've been enjoying Leftovers.  I want to party with Nora Durst.

I recently watched a show called Zen (BBC, I think) on Amazon Prime.  Cool detective show set in Italy.  I found all the characters to be likeable and the episodes played more like mini-movies.

My current favorite is Ray Donovan.  Ray get's shit done.  Jon Voight is great as Mickey Donovan, too.

The new show will probably be about the governor. That's what his spin off graphic novel was. The new season of walking dead will be either a revival or a coffin nail for me. I read the GNs years ago and I'm not thrilled with the direction Kirkman went in. But to each their own.

Everything is a moot point until The Black List starts again....  8)

Honorable mention for True Detective. Just started watching with the wife. Hope it gets better though... so far I'm 2 episodes in and hanging by a thread  :o

About to lay into Braquo Season 3. Really looking forward to it. The first two were awesome.
In Anime terms I've got the second half of Steins Gate to watch too. Shit's just got real there and there's been a real tonal shift. Cracking show so far.

Slightly off topic, but do any of you guys have the same problem as me when trying to watch series with the Mrs: her falling asleep?

Anything we try to watch on the TV together is invariably made out of sync between us by her falling asleep ten minutes into it ;D

It's kind of cute, but also kind of infuriating at the same time  :D

And before anyone cracks the joke; no she doesn't fall asleep during any other shared activities at home with me (not yet anyway, we've only been married a year!)  ;D

I haven't been watching TV lately (years actually) except for an occasional movie.
But recently I have been enjoying Portlandia for a bit of light entertainment. Quite funny and there are often guests from the music world, Jeff Tweedy, Josh Homme, J Mascis, Eddie Vedder, Annie Clarke ...

Is he really going to be in a spin off series (The Governer). I've nearly finished series 4, and I thought he was going to be a changed man and that, and then he went back to his old ways! So far, I've really enjoyed season 4.

Also, the last series of Sons Of Anarchy is about to start, one of the best shows I've ever seen!

I don't think they are going to do a governor spin off. The companion show as they are calling it is supposed to take place outside of Georgia. So who knows could be in another state could be another country but same zombie infested universe.

I'm a fan as well, but I have my doubts about this last season. I'll watch it for the sake of closure, but I don't have high hopes. The last season sort of went off the rails (in my view).

Last season was kind of cathartic (Clay had to die), surprised they killed Tara off.  This season's going to be predictable - everyone dies (pretty much the way Kurt ended The Shield).  I don't know how they're going to stretch Jax killing Gemma for the entire season, but they managed to stretch the Clay ending for like 5 seasons.  Somehow they'll be a tie back to the prequel series that's rumoured to be coming (if it turns out that the entire thing's been a dream that Jax's dad had which pushed him to then try to get the club to go legit, it wouldn't surprise me, though it would be a disappointment).

The last TV series I really followed was the new Battlestar Galactica. And that ended really well. As in not at all. After that I more or less stopped really watching television shows. I got so busy I was away most evenings anyway. Everybody kept saying I should watch Game of Thrones, it's just the thing for me, but I just no longer have the time to get into a new TV series.

My wife likes the semi-reality singing shows...  American Idol (not as much), The Voice (better talent) and Glee (not reality at all).  She also likes The Bachelor/ette.  So I watch those with her sometimes, but mostly she just watches them when I'm not home or when I'm doing something else in the evening.

I like Arrow, Game of Thrones, Vikings, and NFL Football.  I also watch The League occasionally.  Most of those I watch when my wife isn't around or when she's doing something else.  Though I think I'm going to introduce her to Arrow pretty soon.  I think she'll like it.

The shows we watch together are The Big Bang Theory, Nashville and The Blacklist.

All of our shows are DVR'd so we can watch them at our leisure, and ffwd through commercials.  This works out well because we're still finishing up last season's runs of many of the shows, and the new seasons are just about ready to begin.  Speaking of new seasons, Gotham looks interesting...

On the reality side of things, we've been watching a lot of naked stuff lately. Naked and Afraid is a great show. Not sure how real it is, but it seems semi-legit. Naked Dating is drama-fueled garbage, but it's a guilty pleasure.

Just finished Boardwalk Empire Season 4 (yeah I know I am behind, but I refuse to pay for Sky).

The ending actually brought a tear to my eye (I love that character).

Overall another great season, but not quite up there with 2+3 (2 was the best for me).

I'm looking forward to seeing how Season 5 pans out. I also hope there will be a lot more Van Alden  :)

That is a great show! Bear Grylls makes it look easy, that show makes me think I would last about 30 minutes! There was one guy, about 6 months after filming, was still really ill with about 3 or 4 serious things. Can't remember which episode (I've only seen a handful) but he got carried out half way though and the women finished and she was the record holder for spending most days on her own and finishing, but the before and after pictures of them does make me think it is real.

i haven't really been watching anything lately, but i suppose i'll start on the blacklist again.

i did start watching a bbc show called utopia a few weeks ago.  i've only seen the 1st 2 episodes at this point, but it seems interesting.  sort of violent & quirky.  i might pick that up again at some point.

on another note, i'm not too excited to see colin farrell cast as the lead in the 2nd season of true detective.  i've never been a fan of his, but maybe the show itself will be good enough to overlook how utterly boring he is, lol.

If you haven't then watch it. It's awesome. It may change your opinion of him.

If you have seen it well.... there aren't that many films he's in that are good thinking about it (exc. minority report)  ;D

True it is an ok film.

But actors and dialogue are not Terence Malick's priorities. Shooting long scenes of trees and wildlife on the other hand...  ;D

I've fallen into a couple of shows on NetFlix over the summer

The Killing - pretty sure it's done now, but it was pretty well written and enjoyable to watch.  Constructed similarly (not in storyline, but the way they strung it together) to the first season of 24, where it's written in such a fashion as the season ender could very well be the series ender and there'd be no drop off.  Starting Season 3 tonight.

Bojack Horseman.  Dumb, just really dumb.  But Will Arnett is funny in pretty much whatever he does, and his character reminds me of a lot of people I work with.

Brooklyn Nine Nine (brilliant comedy. It's good when an episode can be rewatched, and I've watched many 3-4 times)
Arrow
Grimm

I'm probably going to try and watch the new:
Gotham
Flash

A Touch of Cloth. Think police proceedurals ran though an Airplane filter with a translation then to British sensibilities. It's taking the piss out of both UK ones (A touch of Frost and the like) and US (CSI, etc). Very silly and made me laugh out loud a lot (Touching cloth is British slang, I expect some of it might go over peoples heads). They made three of them that were two parters. On DVD they're put together as three separate mini-films.

Damn, was going to start watching that one with my girlfriend tonight, we tried True Detective last night and both fell asleep half way through episode one... obviously that's not giving it a huge chance but, when does it start to get good? After hearing so much about it was expecting something a bit more gripping, so far Fargo seemed better.

I Loved True Detective! The 1st episode was sluggish tho. The Strain was...well it was (for me at least) very poorly executed. good writing, then bad writing, then coincidence after coincidence had me saying really...REALLY. IDK you might like it i'd say give it a try. I usually have a strong opinion when it comes to horror stuff.

Watched some of the first episode of The Strain last night (got distracted for 20 minutes of it) while I didn't think it was great, with some of the acting and writing seeming a bit hammy to me (and perhaps just me but a feeling the budget was being stretched too far at points so some things seemed to suffer and look a bit... tacky) it was a bit more enticing and easier to watch, got me intrigued at least to watch the next couple of episodes to see how it goes.

I'll probably revisit True Detective when i'm on my own, Wood Harrelson gives it some bonus points for a second shot.

What's the verdict on American Horror Story? Heard a lot about that but know almost nothing of it so we might try that tonight... or am I making a huge mistake haha.

The first season of American Horror Story is ok IMO. It seemed like the cheesy reenactments on those ghost story shows. The second season was better but still not great. I'd say its worth watching once but I could see myself watching it more than that.

Watching:
The Strain: Officially done after this weeks episode. Guillermo, you have dissapointed me for the first time :'(
Damn, was going to start watching that one with my girlfriend tonight, we tried True Detective last night and both fell asleep half way through episode one... obviously that's not giving it a huge chance but, when does it start to get good?

Haven't given American horror story a try yet...let me know what you think!

Just watched the first episode, not bad! Dig drag a little at points and some of it was just downright odd but acting and production was pretty solid and it had a decent atmosphere. Not a classic but the feel of a half decent ghost story modern horror film, i'd watch it over one of the paranormal activity films.

Having now finished the first season of American Horror Story... my verdict is very odd and very fucked up, so if that's your thing!

Now started The Leftovers... bit jesusy feeling (and being by the guy that did lost that could become an issue real quick if there's some soppy slow-mo ending in a church) but interested to find out what exactly is actually going on with all the different character arch's. Not something i'd be dying to watch week after week but for binging it serves a purpose and is respectable, Christopher Eccleston is very good in it too IMO.

American horror story is on my list, looks like a big investment, so keep us posted!

Touch of cloth looks great, though I'll have to watch with subtitles. Ironic , no?

What does touch of cloth mean?

THE KNICK-Plus, Cliff Martinez does the soundtrack, and it is amazing. The juxtaposition of super sweet electronic music and turn of the century operating theatre madness is so cool

From the Urban Dictionary:

Touching cloth

A saying that is used when someone has waited FAR too long to have a shit. It
verbalises the possible condition that the lead end of a shit has protruded beyond the opening of the anus and has made contact with their undergarment.

I need to find a bathroom right now.. I'm TOUCHING CLOTH

See also, Turtles Head...

Though it actually originates from the UK comic Viz (certainly the first time I came across it) from the strip Fat Slags.

Yeah, I opened this thread to post The Knick. I just caught up and it's pretty good. There's not a lot of plot, but the whole vibe is really interesting and the acting and artwork is great.

I just watched the first episode of Peaky Blinders last night. I'm digging it, although is it possible my American ears are hearing Sam Neil doing a slightly too exaggerated Irish accent? I mean, he was born in Ireland, but I swear his accent in this show sounds like he's trying.

I am still loving The Knick and my mother just got me hooked on Broadchurch since her and I were fans of The Killing. I am really enjoying the case shows that are one case per season. Just gives them plenty of time for char development. Have not been impressed with the first to episodes of South Park..

I've heard Peaky Blinders is pretty decent. Cillian Murphy is a really good actor.

I do have an aversion to UK drama though.

When I watch US stuff like TWD, GOT, Boardwalk Empire, True Detective etc. it makes me think how far our own drama has to go to catch up with that kind of quality.

There isn't the budget at the BBC though to be fair.

Exactly my feelings so I usually turn to the US... on the plus side though, they poach a lot of our actors anyway.

It's all about budget, because we have the actors (mainly in GOT at the moment). Rome was the last one that truly blew me away and stands as my favourite TV series (Band of Brothers a close second). But even that was jaw droppingly expensive and had to rely on HBO money to get made.

Got two staggeringly good seasons out of it though. Based on the fictional lives of two centurions in the Roman Empire that get embroiled in historical events.

So far, I've found Peaky Blinders to be about as good as any of the American dramas I've seen. The type of setting doesn't really require a huge budget, so it's really down to the writing and acting, and the UK has loads of talent in those departments.

Gotta say, little underwhelmed with the new shows this season thus far, especially in the comedy department.

That being said, Gotham and A-Z are pretty good.

Bad Judge will be the first cancellation.  Absolutely horrible, with the exception that Kate Walsh plays a hot mess fairly well.

I just found out that they made a series of the "Green Arrow" franchise of DC comics. I just had to watch it and I am pleasantly surprised. I have to say, I haven't read any of the comics, because comic books are rather rare in Europe (why ever), so I don't know how it matches up.
Anyhow, I like the show and will watch "Gotham" next, which is obviously based on the Batman franchise. Nevertheless, Batman is not in it. Jim Gordon is the protagonist and the series takes place starting after Bruce Wayne's parent's death. sounds promising to me :)

We really like Arrow. Like anything based on the comics, they take a lot of liberties with the origin, etc., but it's still a great show. Tomorrow the same network airs the series based on The Flash, and I'm sure there will be plenty of crossover, and I'm really looking forward to that one.

Most of the time i'll wait that some good series are done and then lost a complete week of my life watching all of it one take...

Tho! It's getting cold up here! So couple days a week i'll be religiously listening to the 2014-2015 Hockey Season, being a huge Montreal Canadiens fan since i'm a child.

I listen to the game in streaming or go at some friend place where we gather and yell our lungs out for 3hours, great times!

i haven't really been watching anything lately, but i suppose i'll start on the blacklist again.

i did start watching a bbc show called utopia a few weeks ago.  i've only seen the 1st 2 episodes at this point, but it seems interesting.  sort of violent & quirky.  i might pick that up again at some point.

on another note, i'm not too excited to see colin farrell cast as the lead in the 2nd season of true detective.  i've never been a fan of his, but maybe the show itself will be good enough to overlook how utterly boring he is, lol.

Have you seen In Bruges?

If you haven't then watch it. It's awesome. It may change your opinion of him.

If you have seen it well.... there aren't that many films he's in that are good thinking about it (exc. minority report)  ;D
i watched in bruges the other night.  yes, colin farrell was very good in that.  he even made me laugh several times.

but see, that's his irish guy.  i think what i don't like so much is his american guy.  too serious.  boring.  then again, it's possible i have only seen him in about 3 other things so maybe i haven't given him a fair shake.

Here are some new things I am plowing through (now that I no longer have cable)

- The Black Mirror (Awesome UK show)
- American Horror Story (seasons 1 + 2 are good 3 is like watching "My So Called Life")
- Gotham (great show love the Commissioner Gordon story)
- Louie (Comical Genius)
- Breaking Bad (on season 2 now, fantastic show)
and probably a couple others. I've been trying not to just power through shows. Netflix is not helping haha

Binge watched the holiday break due to a wicked case of the flu.

SOA Season 7 - ended the way it should have, though it was a little bit on the ridiculous side with the level of violence.  Walt Goggins was stellar.  Vic Mackey being in the last two episodes was a little tongue in cheek.

Covert Affairs Seasons 3, 4, & 5 - a solid show, reminiscent of Alias without the JJ Abrams losing his mind factor.  Piper's on my Hall Pass list.

Franklin and Bash Season 3 - funny filler TV.

Four more days til we're back in the DANGER ZONE!  They better bring back phrasing, it will literally drive me crazy if they don't.

I have been watching that lately too, while building pedals :-)
I am normally not too much into stand up comedy but this is really good. I was quite surprised also that not only he did the acting, writing and producing, but even the editing!

It's at times touching, hilarious, abstract ... really great.

My girl and me are in the middle of this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Children_of_Golzow (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Children_of_Golzow)
World's longest running documentary. It starts on the first day of school in 1961, East Germany, and visits the kids from that class every few years to see how their lives go and what they do with it and how they manage things.
Very interesting to see how some happy children turn into not so happy adults, and how some people manage to live good lives and others don't, especially in regards to the breakdown of East Germany, the reunification, their whole lives basically in ruins and/or at a new start.
I can't say though if it's as interesting to non-Germans or people who don't speak the language.

As a whole, it's probably on par with BB.  It's not as consistent though - the great seasons are definitely better than BB, but they do have some stinker seasons as well.  BB was pretty much even throughout the series.

I actually disagree with that (although I haven't finished it yet, currently starting season 4) i've found it more consistent so far, even the lower points and breaking bad I really struggled to get through at points, at season 3 I stopped watching for about a year as I just got a bit... disinterested, a lot of it I was just watching to get it done.

Plus I much prefer the characters (the lack of Skyler and her sister does make that quite easy though).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heimat_%28film_series%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heimat_%28film_series%29)
Follows a family during 3 different periods between 1919 and 2000. I only watched the 2nd series taking place in the 60ties in Munich. I found them incredibly well made, each episode being more like an actual movie than a part of a series. Great quality. I have been trying to get my wife to watch the other 2 series with me but not speaking German she got a bit bored.

Yeah, I could understand that.  It's been years since I watched the first few SOA seasons, I literally chose to keep watching Season 1 as opposed to sleeping for like 3 days straight.  I thought the whole Irish thing was a bit of a let down after Season 1.  Sutter is really good at cathartic season enders though, as well as a few things you just never saw coming.

I always thought the strength in BB was the consistent de-evolution of Bryan Cranston's character, from a guy who was doing the wrong thing in order to try and provide for his family to a guy who finally accepted his position in life as a drug kingpin, and the counterpoint from Aaron Paul, going from a burn out to a guy who wanted to escape the life no matter the cost.  WW was a far better character than any single character on SOA.

I was the same with season 1, binged it all during work and night, first episode I didn't think I was going to get in to it but that changed fast.

The Irish thing, I was fine with it in Charming but when they went to Ireland I was a bit meh but it was still good (the white supremacists though was gritty and truly disturbing at points and very engaging, not a massive fan of Rollins but he played that part very well). And some of the big double bluffs and resolutions are just spectacular as you say, I never saw the end of season 3 coming but was glad it played out how it did.

WW I agree as a solo performer was of course fantastic, probably the only reason other than Gus (brilliant and interesting character) I stuck it through, although his character change at points felt... forced? Not an acting thing but just the consistency of writing, too much swings and roundabouts.

I agree stand alone WW was superior carrying the show and Bryan was just fantastic (Aaron Paul while good and I see your point, I never engaged with him enough, he was too erratic and even neurotic at points, his character didn't 'sit' that great with me, once again, not the acting, the show) but the ensemble of SOA (despite not being as real) more than makes up for it, at some points characters go off course a bit but they always seem to come back, I think they're very aware when they're pushing things the wrong way. Also, gotta say I love Opie.

They're both great, but I find the flow of SOA better and if I was going to re-watch one I know which i'd pick.

One final point, while the setting of Charming may not be as real I definitely prefer it... Breaking Bad was certainly more real but TV is escapism to a point and i'm more a long for the ride (pun intended) so far in Charming.

I started AMC "Better call Saul" and saw the pilot of "The man in the high castle".

Better call Saul isn't as good as breaking bad up to this point but it is very interesting.

I watched the first episode of "the last man on earth" last night. Pretty humorous. I hope the show doesn't try to extend itself too far, but the premise and the result are both absolutely hilarious.

Also, I watched the first episode of Backstrom last night too. Rainn Wilson will always be the same person, so it's kinda not surprising, but I really liked it.

It basically seemed like CSI or NCIS or whatever they're called with one, out of place, interesting character who I could also see getting tedious and a generous dousing of shaky cam and quick cuts with helicopters.

Yeah I love the original and didn't expect it to exactly stack up but thought it could be okay, might give it a miss then.

Just started the new Daredevil series on Netflix.  I'm four episodes in and I like it quite a bit.  It's much darker than a lot of the other Marvel stuff out there but still has humor at points.  It also comes across as less superhero and more vigilante.  Definitely not kid friendly, though.

I totally agree. Being a complete comic book nerd it is absolutely better than most of the more recent (since Disney bought Marvel) Marvel stuff. I always though of the DareDevil to me more of a vigilante than a "superhero". Kind of like a blind Batman.

Mad Men could have been a good show, but half of it is sort of crap.  1960s gritty NYC, if done as a real period piece, like Boardwalk Empire, is a great setting for a show, but probably would be expensive to do.  It was all shot inside in a fake office, instead of outside, with old cars and taxi cabs that weighed 5000 pounds

A well done show on 1980s NYC would also be really good - crack, graffiti, Mayor Dinkins, NYPD cars with light bars like Ghostbusters, etc

I watched Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency over the holidays.

Confusing as all hell in the best possible ways. Very much captured the Douglas Adams style of the originals. Not perfect (Some of the performances were a bit wooden and some of the plot threads drag at times) but it made for a hell of a fun trip.

Saw the first episode of Game of Thrones.

With how many titty shots they went for, you half expect Jason Voorhees to come bursting in. Very tedious.

Didn't give enough of a damn to bother with the second episode. Especially when I know that the endgame is zombie apocalypse.

GoT was doing that HBO thing of having to show so many tits to get the viewers in. Because viewers want tits! Thankfully it seems to have become far more about plot than tits now that people actually watch it for that.

Gotta agree though, it's become a tedious trend to try and out nudity/violence/swear each other now rather than actually making a good show that people watch because it's good... GoT FWIW, if you can get past the middle of S1 is pretty bloody good. But for the first chunk, you could tell there was a tits quota.

I agree. Although the high nork quota didn't bother or offend me too much I have to admit  ;D

GoT gets better as it goes on IMO. Went through a dip round season 4/5, but is getting nice and exciting again.

It doesn't bother me either, but I find it tedious when it's a gratuitous T&A scene just because. It's not like it's hard to watch porn these days... TV actually is becoming the last place you can get a decent story these days outside of independent cinema. The constant stream of T&A cheapens that IMO.

I read that Emilia Clark said she wouldn't do any more nude scenes after Season 1, and the producers were totally fine with that. I believe the one nude scene with her from last season was all CGI.

After season 1 I read all the books and I am not watching season 6 prior to reading the books. Season 5 already went ahead and spoilered some things. Killing people off or not even putting them in the series is a big hint towards "those characters won't matter for the main plot and won't be doing anything of importance any more".
Fun fact: after I made that decision to wait for the book, I was randomly spoilered at san francisco airport at the baggage claim when people next to me were talking about it. Of course it wasn't their intent, but I know some stuff from the start I didn't want to know. :-\ Now let's just hope Martin actually finishes the book.

I read that Emilia Clark said she wouldn't do any more nude scenes after Season 1, and the producers were totally fine with that. I believe the one nude scene with her from last season was all CGI.

I think to remember her saying that she had a body double at first, then did some scenes herself and switched back to a double. not entirely sure though

Spoilers on GoT are a PITA. I watch it on Blu-Ray so there's lag between the show and when I get to watch it where I have to avoid anything on the internet. Facebook is terrible for people letting things slip. Worse still are re-cap bloody trailers, on season they actually showed a character being murdered in the bloody trailer. Oh, so that's gonna happen then... I was really pissed off about that.

Now I just binge watch it as soon as the discs are released.

Stan vs. Evil is a nice show.  A low-key version of Ash vs. Evil Dead with the best guy from Scrubs as the Quint from Jaws.  It is on Amazon.

Started watching "Fortitude" on Amazon.  Seems pretty good so far.  Really cool scenery (filmed in Iceland IIRC) and there seem to be some elements of horror creeping into the story.

I also need to finish watching "Apocalypse: World War II" on Netflix.  I've seen 3 episodes so far, and it's been damn good.

omg, Fortitude was awesome.  A few things that I didn't care for, but overall a great watch.  I think I liked season 1 better though still worth watching season 2.

Just watched silicon valley s4, and will likely start "westworld" and/or "the night of" soon.

I just got done watching season 1 of Silicon Valley and it's incredible. Watching it gives me both a huge desire to start a tech company but also a massive reminder that I know precising dick about coding, hardware or running a company. I could do the Erlich bit I guess :D

We just finished Gravity Falls.

Really amazing show, insanely deep and smart for a "kid's" show. All the more amazing that it was extremely successful and the creator voluntarily ended it after 2 seasons.

I guess this show has been out for a while, but I'm just now catching it, so it's new to me!  ;D
Right, I was wondering about season 2.  From the pic I saw, it looks like they cast Dennis Quaid in it.  I kinda like how season 1 has a bunch of Scandinavian (maybe?) actors I'm not too familiar with, so it seems different that they chose a big screen American actor for it.  No matter though, I'm sure I'll watch it eventually if I like the rest of season 1.

So far, the first episode of Watchmen has been pretty bonkers.

The Boys is a slightly different take on the comic, but is pretty close overall.

I loved Watchmen's trailer, and I've been looking forward to it (haven't had the spare time to watch just yet), but read a quote by the show runner the other day that has me really worried. Short version: He felt that Ozymandias was absolutely and utterly right in his decision to Squid NY, and that there was no other option.

Which strikes me as such a fundamental misunderstanding of the story, the characters, and the actual on-the-page ending of the comic that I am kinda terrified to have this guy helming the show.

Time will tell I suppose.

I've not read the book. I generally find adaptations to be lacking if I've read the book, but I more recently I find myself waiting to read books until after watching an adaptation when possible. Gives me a chance to enjoy both because the book is (almost) always better.

Bojack Horseman. I can't believe how consistently, outrageously good the writing is on that show. It reminds me of mid-90s Simpsons with how sharp it is, and it's a crying shame that one of the best and strangest episodes of television I've ever seen didn't win an Emmy last year and lost to a mediocre episode of the Simpsons.

Also Cheers, which holds up.

I decided to relent to the hype and signed up for Disney+ to see if it might be worth a few bucks every month. I thought the first episode of The Mandalorian was pretty great, actually. Werner Herzog and the bounty droid were lots of fun to watch. The only thing I didn't like was the music. It just seemed to be a strange choice, esp. the theme. I'm kind of glad they are not doing a full season dump...it'll be nice not to binge something I like then forget about it in a week.

Just got caught up with Mandalorian, and yeah, the Music is a little.... overbearing? at times. Like a scene of our protags riding across a desolate plain has this big soaring bombastic score. Something that would've been better suited by something atmospheric and sparse (to mirror the landscape) is instead this big mashup of a full brass section, string accompaniment, and an odd scratchy electric guitar sorta stapled on top of it.

Other tracks feel like someone wanted to do the Tron Legacy Soundtrack and got bored so just buried it under a big pile of "BWAAAAH" sounds.

They haven't quite picked a tone to stick with, even within individual tracks. The western thing could've worked, go full on Ennio Morricone in space. A grunge-y Mad Max junker theme could've worked. A classic John Williams-esque orchestral score could've worked. But instead so far they've tossed all three in a blender and so every track is meandering in tone and confused in focus.

The theme song, for those curious:

Know I'm behind the times but I started the Mandalorian. Three episodes in and I really like the vibe of the show. It gives itself some space to breath, which is great. Stylistically it owes as much to Kurosawa as it does to Star Wars.

Is it just me or is his ship somewhat reminiscent of the Winnebago from Spaceballs?

I've read that there wasn't much creative control with Rise  of Skywalker. I've read the palpatine stuff and the Kylo/Rey thing at the end were mandated by Disney.

They seem to have put a lot of thought into the monster designs in The Witcher.  My main complaint about it would be that there's a lot of timeline jumping and carry on.  Plus, everyone is so clean (unless Geralt has been swallowed whole and reguritated by something) - armour is spotless, et al.  At least it's not as bad as the Sword of Shannara TV series, or Legend of the Seeker (The Sword of Truth book series was pretty average to start with).

I just watched all 5 seasons of Orphan Black the past month. Man that was a good show. Scifi based in reality, with great writing, acting and some pretty descent action. Tatiana Maslany acted the hell out of all those roles, at times I would forget that it wasn't one person playing them all, sometimes with 5 or more on screen at once. Some interesting ethical stuff to think about. Check it out if you haven't.

Daredevil season 1 was solid. I really like it thought it was a little dark and violent for my taste. Season 2 unfortunately isn't as good.

Jessica Jones season 1 is excellent. I was really surprised with how good it was.

I'm currently rewatching Archer again. I can't believe how well it holds up every time.

First 5 (?) seasons I'd agree with you, but the last few have been so far out there I don't know what to make of it.

Anybody else watch Legends Of Tomorrow? It's a superhero thing, but they all kind of suck at being superheroes and know it. The first few seasons aren't great but starting around season 3 it gets pretty weird and hilarious.

Are there any Mystery Science Theater 3000 fans here?

I don't want to spam you guys by mentioning an ongoing Kickstarter campaign to fund season 13, so I won't mention it at all. Sorry, I'm excited. :-X

I tried this one and didn't make it through the pilot - just got too bored. Maybe I'll try to push through to get more into it.

It's one of the finest things to ever be on TV. Although sometimes I wonder how the did Zombie Nightmare, but never did Rock n Roll Nightmare.

There's a movie called "Hercules Returns" that's similar to mystery science theatre.  Not sure how easy it is to find these days.

Many years ago our local film club got the actors in and they live dubbed a terrible horror movie from the 40s.  Very clever stuff.

I heard the Boys went woke. These days I only watch classic shows, currently rewatching Babylon 5 again, it's effin' awesome watching a show that's not preaching at me.

If it has, it must be with the yet-to-be-released Season 3. The first 2 seasons were awesome!

I don't remember the first episode that much, but yeah, power through.  It's worth it.  I'd put it up there with SOA, Breaking Bad, and the non sucking seasons of Dexter

QuoteI heard the Boys went woke

Hardly.  If people are complaining about the early sexual harassment subplot then I'm guessing they haven't read the comic because what happened to Starlight in that was much, much, much worse and it's been toned WAAAAAAAY back in the series.

Edit:  Ok.  Because I was interested in how people might possible be upset at some "wokeness", I thought I'd have a google.  This is my first hit:

https://filmgoblin.com/reviews/woke-report-did-we-just-get-conned-by-the-boys/

Here's my rebuttal:
1.  Are trigger warnings at the start of an episode REALLY that much of an issue for people?
2.  Hughie IS a weak beta male in the comic too.  He stays that way even when he gets powered up thanks to Compound V.  Lol at complaining that the main character is a "beta" or whatever these people spend their time thinking about.  The main character needs an arc, not perfection from the outset.
3.  Maybe fair point.  I'm not a fan of including sexual preferences just to tick a box: ref The Rise of Skywalker with it's .5sec lesbian kiss.  I mean, what was the point if not for some tokenistic box ticking?
4.  Ok, yep, the girl is powered and the others aren't.  I think the rest will be powered at some stage as part of the story arc.  We've also gotten an actual backstory for the girl that was never given in the comic, iirc, so...
5.  Complaining about male nudity.... insecure much?  Ok, maybe fair point.
6.  This is a big deal for these people?
7.  Again?  I suppose they think Butcher should have been able to hit MM's mum back, because, you know, she hit him
8.  Ok, maybe a trigger warning could have been included for this episode. Fair's fair.
9.  Pretty certain that's how it was in the comic too.
10.  This happens in real life....

Genderswaps.... there's a reason for Elizabeth Banks being put in that role, acting as a mother figure for Homelander.

Raceswap:  Frenchie is still called Frenchie, and the Israeli actor is playing a Frenchman.  Why do I think there's some anti-semiticism going on with this complaint?  Something something jews taking over Hollywood?

The poster with the biohazard symbol over The Deep....  these people complaining about "wokeness" really are a sensitive bunch...  Reading the comments on that page pretty much confirms that.

I've heard that said about Watchmen, but I'm guessing that's because some people have issues with a black female superhero/vigilante as a main character.

Odd, I remember thinking that show was kind of preachy when it was first on. I remember it being somewhat controversial for some reason. it's good to know it holds up, maybe I'll give it a shot now. I loved sci-fi back then but I think it came out around when I got a car and some more freedom, less tv after that.

I don't really like TV, tried the boys and couldn't get into it

I'm rewatching Barry on HBO. Forgot how great it is. NoHo Hank is definitely one of my favorite TV characters of all time.

I'm starting the new season of the handmaid's tale now that I have a larger chunk to consume. It takes a lot to offend me, and that show does on many fundamental levels but in a good way. The character development is great as well.

We're working our way through season 2 of Umbrella Academy.  Liking it so far.

At the moment camped out shooting around my daughter's place. According to her most of last night with a spotlight shining in her bedroom window.

We've kept up to date with it but haven't started this latest season because it's starting to get a bit repetitive.  How many opportunities to leave does June want to pass up?

The Nevers - Steampunk/Fantasy/Sci-Fi that's way better than critics are reviewing. I think the Whedon stain is on this one, because I get the feeling that the critics haven't even watched it.

Mare of Easttown - A dark but decent True Detective set in my neck of the woods - SNL did a great spoof.

Jupiter's Legacy - Sometimes it seems like a live-action Incredibles, but has some of the noir grit that the awesome Watchmen series had. Heroes and/or Villains.

Currently on Farscape.

You should definitely start watching the new season!
I just watched the new episode last night and it was pretty awesome!
