Title: Whiskey River: STM800
Post by: jubal81 on February 02, 2015, 06:41:06 PM
Looong time in the planning/making, but a huge payoff. Sounds fantastic and gives you the saucer-plate eyes when you goose it with a booster. Wowser.

Followed the build doc and everything went together really smoothly except for a couple minor wiring goofs. (There's a lotta wiring). My main tip is to use the DMM to check each connection isn't grounding out as you solder it just to be sure some little shielding hair isn't touching something it shouldn't.

The light-up toobs are a bit tricky. I took the sockets completely apart to get the center pin out and all pins flew everywhere. Got them back together and epoxied. Stuck LEDs in the sockets and wired them to the heater supply and to the Optoshield and voila - light show!

One thing I forgot to mention is how quiet this thing is. No hum, buzz or hiss at all.

Wow!  What a beauty you've got there.  I love the artwork and the tube protectors are killer!  I'm hopeful I will get to build one of these!

Looks awesome Jason.  I've got mine populated, just need to find the time to build it.
Where did you get those tube protectors.  I've seen some on eBay but they come from China and I have doubts about the quality and finish of those...

Did you trial it so far into poweramp input (bypassing pre amp) or into pre amp of tube amp and how did the volume output work out?

They're China eBay guards. Took a couple weeks to get here. I knew I'd be building one months ago, so I had time to gather everything. The faceplate was etched a couple months ago.

My amp doesn't have a loop, so I used a 100KA master pot and been running it right into the input/preamp. There's a lot of output available, but it's not drastically more than a lot of other solid state drive boxes I've built.

Frequency Central did that a while back with sub mini tubes over on DIYSB. I think it was called the vibra caster or vintage vibe or something like that. I don't know if there was ever a pcb made or anything but I remember multiple layouts and veros for it.

Crazy, I had a small farm in Bethel less than a half mile from Jukebox Junction. We moved into town a couple of years ago. Asheville is a great town, I can see why you'd miss it. A bit weirder than Wilmington. In a good way. I go to school at AB Tech for EET so I'm in and out of there quite a bit.

We camped this past summer at a great campground called Cheoah Point. It sits on a little peninsula on Lake Santeetlah which is right beside Lake Fontana and Tsali. Very few people there and if you can get the cabins, do it...Very sweet spot.

if you use a metal enclosure like he did in combination with metal-frame jacks (as in without a plastic insulating housing), wiring GND to one jack is enough as the other sleeve is grounded via the enclosure.
