Title: Removing solder from circuit board hole
Post by: adam193 on January 31, 2017, 07:27:31 AM
Hi. Newbie here.

Working on the confidence booster.

I mistakenly filled in one socket (sorry if that's the wrong word) for a resistor while soldering in another.

How can I remove the solder with a wick? I can't seem to get the solder out of the hole.

Thanks in advance. Ad.

You will probably need a solder sucker to get solder out of the pad.

An alternative would be to gently heat the pad with your soldering iron to melt the existing solder in the pad and push the lead through of the component that is supposed to go there.

The easiest thing would be to order a solder sucker. That's what I use and their fairly cheap. Just heat up the joint with a bit of new solder and suck it all away when it starts to flow.

But with a wick you may need to apply a bit of solder to the tip of the iron to get the solder to flow again. So add a dab of solder to the iron, place the wick over the joint and then apply the iron until the solder flows into the braid. Pull the wick and iron away and check to see if it worked. If not, let the joint cool and then go in again and try.

I have also had success by taking some braided wire and heating the joint until the wire can slide into the hole and absorb the solder. Then just snip off the exposed wire to get ride of the majority of the solder and reheat the joint to remove the wire and it should be mostly clear. That's probably not the best way to do it though.

I just heat the pad and quickly blow the solder out the other side with my mouth. Sure it gets everywhere and burns like hell if it gets on you, but it's quick and easy in a pinch.

If there's no solder sucker or braid yet available and you can't blow it clear, do like Brian said, heat the pad but i'd poke something into the hole that the solder won't melt to like a wooden  toothpick or, what i always have handy for it's endless uses, a stainless steel dental pick.

This is the one I got the most miles on:

I love it since the tip does not melt and it creates a seal around your iron tip and the pad to suck out the soldier.

I've got that one as well. It's worth the extra money.

I'll add my voice to the chorus. Bought mine at Adafruit as well, cheapest way i found to get one to/in Canada.
