Title: Dropbox public is gone ...
Post by: midwayfair on March 16, 2017, 06:48:28 AM
I've been using this for years to share all my layouts and schematics.

I really don't want to do the tedious work of migrating all my images to a new host but I guess I have to. Dropbox's best feature was that if I replaced a file with the same file the URL stayed the same, which isn't true for things I host on my Wordpress sites or, I think, for Google Drive.

Anyone have a good solution?

(I just noticed that Rej's build docs are hosted on Dropbox, too.)

I believe Google Drive will retain the same URL. You just have to post the item as a revision. It does have revision history it's just a little awkward to use.

I use Photobucket which also allows you to keep the file name when importing pics. You need to change the setting in your preferences though as by default it appends some random numbers.

I'm in the same boat. While it will allow some degree of revisionist history, I don't like that all these threads will have a lot more empty space in them now.

Even if you have wordpress on your website, you can still manually upload files to a place of your choice with an ftp client. The files have the names that you want them to have.

Hey folks... Long time no see etc!

I just recently noticed this as well; literally everything of my shared stuff spread out there is located on my dropbox... What is the best new solution? I have a "fairly passive" google drive-account as well; i try to post a "dummy-picture" here just to see if it shows up.

And hey... hope all is good at this very place... despite my absence:)

I ended up using my Wordpress site for pictures, and google drive for anything else that needs to be shared. I will not be migrating everything (schematics when I come across them, but those are mostly in google docs already) but I did move some critical things like my perfboard library.

I had no idea the public sharing was gone for good. I was hoping it was just a setting that needed to be enabled... ugh. I guess I better come up with a permanent solution for the build docs for the Grind Customs FX store. I was under the impression it was something Rej needed to do on his side. Thanks for the heads up Jon. I think I will just use Wordpress's media pool for the PDFs at this point.

This has played hell on the Customforge forums.  People have been uploading their Rocksmith CDLC for a couple of years to dropbox and now all the links are broken.  There's thousands of songs listed there....

I'm kicking the tires of iDrive right now. It's actually a bit more than just a synced set of folders like Dropbox. It can also do incremental backups to the cloud and also to your locally attached devices (NAS or USB external drives). It's free for small storage (5GB) and $60 per year for 1TB.

I'm not mad about the public thing on DropBox, but I need to be able to do backups from multiple devices as well as maintain a set of synced folders for all my personal projects, etc.

I'll let you guys know what I think of it.

Cool. I didnt know about iDrive. Maybe have to check out wordpress too(?).

Im actually... maybe not really mad or pissed off, but a bit dissapointed about dropbox quitting this public thing. To me it was a winning concept, more simple than anything else. I dont feel like setting up a webplace on my own, i just wanna share a song and some pics now n then. Sort of...

well well...

Does this help in anyway?

Thanks. That's helpful (will start using 'raw=1'), but still doesn't seem to allow one to embed a dropbox picture directly into a forum post.

... maybe a solution. Check my post above^^ (the photo of the drill press), where I finally succeeded to direct-link to a picture uploaded to my google drive account. I used this thing:

Yay, this works too. again, check my post above; the photo of the green guitar is posted this way (the "add-raw=1-method").

Pro tip for WordPress sites:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/enable-media-replace/

Allows you to replace a file with a newer version but keep the same filename/URL. I'm a WP developer by day, and we use this on every site we build.

Also, I think it's just Dropbox's public folder that is gone, i.e. the ability for people to open the folder and browse through your files. Direct linking to files is still allowed. All my docs are hosted by Dropbox and they still work - for instance:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/dnizjzbetec84gu/aion-lab-series-preamp-documentation.pdf?dl=0

I also have a local mirror on the website in case Dropbox is blocked, so I end up using both solutions.

Yes and no. Basically you are right, as far as you still are allowed to share files/get public links from dropbox. The main muddle is that every previously shared link - to specific files, not just to the public folder - is invalid today. Which means that literally everything I (and many with me) have shared on e.g. this forum, is gone.

^indeed. Dropbox have fallen a long way down my list of esteem as a result.

Bengt - Thanks, that's great news about the 'raw=1' option.

I haven't changed my links and they all still work... although, they were outside the Public folder to begin with so maybe that has something to do with it?

Really?! Does that mean that you could create "public" files earlier, files that was not located in the public folder? I missed that... If I get you right: Does that mean that you have a few old "dropbox-shared-photos" (etc.) right here at this forum and your photos still show up in the threads? If so, it twists my brain a bit...

...and to have it said: I gladly stand corrected if so. But my posts are still ... gone.

Cheers

Yeah, but I only use free wordpress sites (not running any shops or anything) and I'm pretty sureI can't install plugins. Though I haven't checked for a while ... I also actually rebuilt all my sites in HTML and CSS (and actually better than the WP site because I could do scaling better) but that didn't end up being very useful because I don't want to pay a monthly fee. It turns out that I, too, appreciate cheap over functional. :P

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that they might eventually have to kill that functionality in some way. My sense is that public was nixed in the first place because people have been using DB like an FTP instead of a collaboration, and that's a lot of extra stress on their end (and a lot more costly). If there's a workaround that recreates the problem, I would expect it to die.

Just as a followup on my previous post, I've been testing iDrive for the past few days. It does pretty much all the things I like about DropBox and it offers backup functionality as well. Integrates with smartphone photo streams, has synced folder capabilities, recognizes different devices in the same account, and allows for cloud and local backups.

5GB is free. The 1TB option is $70 a year, but they offer it for $16 for the first year.

You guys seem to want image and file hosting that has permanent public links, which this service seems to be able to do, but maybe not as well as a dedicated file sharing service. Maybe imgur would be better?
