Title: VFE Switching Board -- labelling error on back of board
Post by: zgrav on June 27, 2018, 07:25:24 AM
I have started using the alternate in/out jack points of the board to test everything before installing the board-mounted jacks, since that preserves access to the back side of the board to isolate and fix any issues.  I noticed this morning that the labels for the J1/ground holes and the J2/ground holes are inconsistent from the front side of the board to the back side of the board.  I think the ones on the front side are correct, so don't be confused if things look different when you are checking something on the back side of the board.

How are they inconsistent? I'm not seeing it.  :-\

I'll check this again when I get home tonight and either clarify my comment or apologize for the confusion.

I believe the labelling for the alternate switching inputs and grounds on the bottom side of the board does not match the labels for the holes on the top side.

For example -- the top right side of the switching board has "ALT" next to the edge of the board.  If you look at that same hole on the bottom of the board it is labelled "J2"

The top left hole on the switching board is labelled "J1" but if you look at that hole on the other side it is labelled "ALT"

Think about it again. Look at the images below - one shows the top of the PCB and one shows the bottom (as you would see it in your hands). J1 and J2 are in the same place, regardless. The ALT pads are for wires and the J1 and J2 are for PCB mounted jacks.

you are forgetting that when the board is turned over, the left side becomes the right side.  trace one wire through the hole on both sides and look at the labels.

or look and see that J2 is next to the edge on one side and not next to the edge in the other image.

J1 ALT and J2 ALT are the labels for both tip and sleeve connections. "J1" of the the "J1 ALT" isn't placed over the exact pad that connects to the jack tip. The wiring diagram shows which connections the pads cover (square pad is tip and round pad is sleeve).

I may be trippin' but I see this too.

For bad eyes.

Again, the J1 part of the J1_ALT label is not meant to indicate the location of the tip connection...J1_ALT is the label for both tip and sleeve (similarly with J2_ALT).

Thanks for that clarification.  "J1  Alt"  is a name for two holes on the board, without regard to which one of the two holes is the ground connection.

But if you mistakenly assume it is a label for each hole (so ALT = G), the it appears to be inconsistent on the bottom side of the board.

Kudos again for incuding those separate attachment points on the switching board!
