Just to explore the realm of possibilities, and because I have a terrible track record of finishing pedals by traditional methods, here is my WIP Donut build.
In this first pic is a raw 1590A enclosure with my brand new Donut board (thanks again, Brian!) on the left, a large metal washer on the right, and the same type of washer in the middle, after it has been coated in JB Weld, primed, and painted with gold spray paint.
Here is the same "donut" washer on top of an ivory colored enclosure. I rather like this combination (but that particular enclosure is drilled out for another project).
I think I need to put some glaze on the donut before I mount it.
What do you think?
I've also considered painting the donut washer a different color and adding "sprinkles" made from cut up bits of hookup wire. It's not done yet, so who knows....
Yeah sprinkles for sure.
Yeah, the sprinkles idea is great.
Can you weld it to the stomp switch?
A friend of mine just showed me a "Skate Fuzz" he owns. It has a skate board wheel for the stomp switch. This made me think of that.
Oh, is THAT what Brian meant by a free donut?
I was highly suspicious when I saw that announcement -- it would go bad before it hit New Zealand's shores, for example...

I'm pretty sure Hostess donuts have an unlimited shelf life.
I remembered that I have some wirewrap wire lying around. Looks like my "sprinkles" will be red, white, and blue (I think I'll recut these a tad shorter than on this pic though).

I'll put these on top of some gloss white spray paint, I think.
This is awesome. Excuse me while I go make a run to Krispy Kreme...

I don't believe I can reliably attach it to a stomp switch, but that is an interesting idea (perhaps a smaller donut would work better, or maybe a donut sticker/decal on top of one of those fancy footswitch caps). Plus, I'm aiming to get the enclosure completely done before my Mouser order arrives on Tuesday, and I'm already operating dangerously close to the limits of my skill. ;)
XD you re really going all out on this build ! I love this !!!
Looks more and more yummy...!
Do you also do a gluten free one? :o

This one
is gluten free, sugar free, fat free, and rich in minerals. Hard on the teeth though.

One can always just use it as a lolly to lick on rather than biting it... will last longer too. ;)
That's so awesome!
That's such a cool idea. The board sounds really good to boot. With the glaze switch on it sounds way better than any lpb I remember.
"Sprinkles" update:

I'm actually quite proud of these. I'll probably make some more, just to be safe.
Yummy!!
I'm trying a new painting technique here. I'm using some Blu-tack as a paint mask in order to keep some of the gold and just paint the top of the donut (I think at this point I can safely skip putting quotes around the words donut and sprinkles).
Here is the donut in my outdoor toaster oven.

But aren't they usually deep fried....? :o

I meant my outdoor deep-fryer, of course. Stupid autocorrect! ;D
When I ask Google what this is (via an image search), it says donut:

It definitely looks more donut-like that what I started with:

Here it is on the ivory colored enclosure again:

My kids (3 and 6) think it would look better on a black enclosure, but I'm not too sure.
Tasty looking!
I think I would've gone with a donut-box pink enclosure myself, but that's just me. Yours looks pretty good as it is!

(I just realized this may be a regional thing. Are donut boxes typically pink in other parts of the world?)
A big fat 8mm LED in the donut hole would make this even more exceptional.
It's like Mr Bill with patriotic stubble.

What I was thinking of doing was to drill a hole in the enclosure where the donut is going to go, and putting an LED inside the enclosure so it shines onto some Lambertian (i.e., diffusely reflective, like a white piece of paper) surface at the bottom of the hole, giving a subtle glowing effect. Regardless of whether that works, I'm drilling a big hole under the donut. ;D

I've never seen a pink donut box. I grew up in western Pennsylvania, and I'm currently in Virginia, near DC.
I did briefly think about Pepto pink for the donut icing though, but that would've required a trip to the hardware store, where I wouldn't have found that color anyway. ;)
This is just simply awesome!
My Mouser shipment arrived before I finished the enclosure, so I decided to populate the board. I've finished drilling the enclosure though.
The bit of JB Weld is filling in the old center punch dent for the LED from before I changed my plan.
The output jack will be directly below the donut hole, but I believe I still have enough space to work with. I'm currently planning to put a small piece of painted aluminum flashing in there. I think there will be a large enough gap to hit the flashing with some light from inside the enclosure. If that doesn't work, then I'll just have to think of something else. ;)
Don't you have a constant itch to nibble or lick on any of those two...?

Yes, but I've found that neither the PCB nor the washer actually taste good, which helps. Now, a phenolic resin board, on the other hand -- well, we all know those are yummy, am I right? ;D
this is simply outstanding and also making me hungry
It occurred to me today that Krispy Kreme used to make a light up Christmas ornament, which would have made an amazingly awesome status indicator for a donut pedal, if only it were smaller:
I actually do own one of these ornaments. It would be more appropriate on a 1590BB enclosure. But, someone could make an backlit acrylic faceplate with this logo, I suppose. Just a thought.
Quick proof of concept LED test:
A glow in the dark donut. Who would have thought!
I'd call the test of indirect lighting a success.
I need to make the LED brighter, and I'm still not sure what color I want. I think I should try out a white LED. I also have some UV LEDs, which might look interesting.
Any opinions?
I think white is the way to go. I have a huge 10mm one I'm necer gonna use if you want it. :o

Hmm. Maybe. Your forum profile says you are in Washington, DC. I'm in Alexandria, VA. You probably wouldn't even have to mail it! ;D

I'm about 50 miles South of DC. We should hold a mini convention sometime 8)
I tested a white LED, and although I didn't take pictures yet, I do like it much better than the red. The only problem is the apparent color temperature, which is too blue for my liking (it looks very sterile and clashes with the ivory paint color). Luckily, I have some CTO gels somewhere in my house (from when I was really into photography in a past life) to correct this (I'd like to bring the apparent color temp into the incandescent bulb range, I think). Now, I just need to find those gels....
I found my gels!
I didn't match up the angles of these very well, but on the right is the white LED, and on the left is the same LED shining through a 3/4 CTO filter. I believe that the one on the left is better, but I'm open minded if you want to disagree.

Huh, neat. I actually grew up in DC like a million years ago. My mom lives in Silver Spring. I really need to get back there.

Actually, it reminded me of a Hallongrotta (thumbprint cookie).
I'm almost done cluttering up this place with my ramblings about inedible donuts. ;)
Assuming the pedal works (will test it more completely very soon), the wiring is essentially complete (I just need to ground the enclosure for shielding):

Here is a better picture of the lighting without the donut in the way:
This is so cool! I was just at Universal studios a few weeks ago and we got a "Large Lad" from the Lard Lad donut shop in the Simpsons part of the park. This totally reminds me of that. On a side note the Luigi's Italian "restaurant" had pizza by the slice. They call the meat lover's the "meat likers" and the veggie pizza the "meat haters." :D
Anyway, extremely cool idea!
Thanks! And thanks to everyone else who posted positive comments! :D
I seem to have forgotten to post the finished pedal pic here (even though it is not all that different from my previous pics). I'll remedy that now.

I think I'll go get a real donut to celebrate finishing this. It is my very first 1590A build.
Most excellent, tasty and sweet! Enjoy the ol' donut!
Very nice. A good start to a newfound 1590A obsession.
My younger brother asked if he could post a pic of this pedal on his Instagram. He gave it many hashtags, including #madbeanpedals. Of course, he added many unnecessary filters to the pic I gave him. That is the Instagram way, apparently. :P

One could add some fragrant oils to an Uber Tuber build or something else that gets nice and warm. They would heat up and release a lovely aroma when you switch the pedal on. ;D
Incidentally, I'm working on some experiments around intentionally heating a pedal. Unfortunately, so far, this is about as exciting as watching grass grow.

I've got some more ideas though. ;)

:o I hate to be the harsher of buzzes here but...
Smell is not a dimension, it is a sense. Humans have five of them.
And also BTW... Time is the 4th dimension.
Edit: I knew I was going to get into trouble just saying 5 without some sort of modifier. I should have said 5 Basic senses... Serves me right

irony, humor, duty, pitch, rhythm
My favorite human sense is the sense of beer uprightedness (you know, when someone stumbles or falls down but manages to not spill a single drop). It's sort of a combination of four other senses:
balance,
acceleration,
body position, and
thirst.

I perfer jack and daniels! with an emphasis on beer!
A bit over two years later, I was looking for something to cheer me up, so I started pulling out some of my past builds and playing through them. This is the one that made me smile the most.
It has some battle scars from being dropped onto a road some forgotten time between then and now (after which I had to reattach the donut decoration). But, the donut hole still lights up, and it still sounds amazing for such a simple circuit.

Ahh, 2018, those were simpler times. That donut still makes me laugh too. Good job.
I remember this one, made me smile then and especially now 8)

I missed the growing window this year for another go at the Chia Pedal project, which I still consider a work in progress. I was distracted by "
world events". ;D
I'll definitely regrow it someday. It is currently bare.
